Trivia / Everybody Hates Chris

Go To

  • Ability over Appearance: Tyler James Williams doesn't look or sound anything like the real Chris Rock but his endearing performance more than makes up for it. In fact, Rock was apprehensive about casting him because he felt that Williams didn’t have the look of someone that “everyone hates”.
  • Adored by the Network: In Brazil. The open-air station responsible airs it many times as well.
  • Billing Displacement: Terry Crews has top billing over the cast, which is bizarre seeing how Tichina Arnold was a more reputable actor than Crews at the time the show premiered. The actual star, Tyler James Williams, gets a special “And” credit.
  • Channel Hop: Having premiered in the final year of UPN, it was forced on the show as it joined the inaugural lineup of The CW.
  • In Memoriam: In the episode "Everybody Hates a Part-Time Job" was dedicated to Ray Cymoszinski, the sound mixer of the show, who died in Christmas 2005, 15 days before this episode aired.
  • Pop-Culture Urban Legends: A common theory for the series' ending is that it was because, since the last season was set in the year of 1987, the following season would have to be set in 1988; and since Chris Rock's real life dad, Julius Rock, died precisely that year, he stopped the show to avoid having to portray his father's death. In reality, the series ended simply because the child actors were growing too old. Furthermore, a brief Cutaway Gag in "Everybody Hates Drew" shows Julius, still alive, as an elderly man in the year 2028.
  • Playing Against Type: Terry Crews as Julius, a lovable and easygoing patriarch. He was more of a Scary Black Man in all his previous roles. But he plays it to the hilt when Malvo threatened Chris in "Everybody Hates Chain Snatching".
  • Real-Life Relative: Tyler James Williams's brothers Tylen Jacob and Tyrel Jackson played Little Chris and Baby Drew, respectively, in the episodes "Everybody Hates Halloween" and "Everybody Hates Greg".
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: The reason for the show ending when it did. After Tyler James Williams hit puberty, it was clear he wasn't going to sound anything like Chris Rock's very distinct voice.
