  • The entire game makes no secret of its roots, being inspired by the film Drive (2011). Having the similar concepts of unnamed protagonists, synth soundtracks and explorations into the underworld, it's no wonder that the creators made a point of putting Drive's director in the credits.
    • Driver's jacket can be found as as level dressing.
  • The tiger mask is named Tony, after the Frosted Flakes mascot.
  • The panther mask is named Brandon, after Marlon Brando. Fittingly, in the second game a variation of the mask is revealed to have first been worn by a character who greatly resembles Marlon Brando's character of Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now.
  • The wolf mask is named Dennis, who is also one of the co-creators of the game and lead singer for a band with "Werewolf" in its name.
  • The camel mask is named Rami, for a half-Egyptian writer for Gamasutra named Rami Ismail, who was also one of the developers of Nuclear Throne, which has its own references in Wrong Number.
  • The fish mask is named Phil, for the creator of Fez, Phil Fish. The only effect it has on gameplay is turning all the dialogue French, fitting since Fish is French-Canadian.
  • The Crocodile mask is named Jones. As in Waylon Jones, Killer Croc from the Batman series.
  • One of the last bosses says "Your move, creep!"
  • Richter is likely named for the bald henchman portrayed by Michael Ironside in the original Total Recall, or for W.D. Richter, the director of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
  • The phone company manipulated into putting out the hits is Phonehom.
  • The assault on the police precinct is likely a shout out to either Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) or The Terminator.
  • The snake mask is named Jake, more then likely after Jake "The Snake" Roberts. Denis Wedin has gone on record saying Jake Roberts is his favorite wrestler.
  • The frog mask is named Zack, possibly after Zacharie from the indie RPG OFF, who wears a frog mask.
  • The monkey mask, Willem, has an uncanny resemblance towards the actor of the same name.
  • Two of the achievements are called "Guns for show" & "Knives for pro" a line said by Soap in Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.
  • According to the creators, much of the series' character designs was inspired by 80's-themed movies, such as Beverly Hills Cop (Jacket) and Miami Vice (Mobsters).
  • The first boss, Wilson Fisker, is a clear shout-out to Wilson Fisk, AKA The Kingpin. His appearance seems based on the character's portrayal in the 2003 Daredevil movie.
