    General Tropes for the Series

  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Miu manages to be an even bigger troublemaker than Nagito, to the point where the group decides to start having her watched.
  • Confess to a Lesser Crime: Taka and Fuyuhiko both attempt this as the culprits of the first two trials.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Sayaka and Celeste develop a serious rivalry early on, yet often find themselves cooperating in trials.

Class Trial 68

Capitalism overtakes the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles as Monokuma introduces MonoBucks, putting a price tag on basic needs and offering luxuries to those able to earn in the Casino. It isn't long though before Nekomaru Nidai is found dead in a classroom.

Tropes for the Original Class Trial
  • Disappointed by the Motive: Taka's accomplice, Nagito, is notably annoyed to realize whose secret letter he obeyed, considering it disgraceful that the Ultimate Moral Compass would commit murder and considering the world he wanted to create where everybody is equal to be miserable.
  • Face Death with Dignity: After being lured out to an isolation class room and realizing that he was going to be murdered, Nekomaru apparently allowed Taka to kill him in hopes of ending the motive
  • Failed a Spot Check: Taka manages to slip a note into Nagito's pocket without him noticing while having a conversation with him.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Miu attempts to kill Celeste with a booby trap after being forced to act as her servant.
  • Mundane Utility: Rather than make use of his Ultimate Luck, Nagito wins the Jackpot by taking advantage of a rigged slot machine.
  • Pull the Thread: Sayaka eventually resolves the case by pulling apart various holes in Taka's story.
  • Uriah Gambit: Having received a letter luring her to an obvious trap, Celeste chooses to send Hiyoko in her place.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Taka murders Nekomaru with the intent of fulfilling grand plans to recreate the world as a society of equals.

Class Trial 68-2

Monokuma announces the return of the MonoBucks and the implementation of rental weapons. Chihiro Fujisaki is soon found dead in the Gymnasium as a result.

    Tropes for the Second Trial
  • I Have Your Wife: Monokuma threatens the absent Peko to make Fuyuhiko desperate enough to kill.
  • Murder by Mistake: Subverted. Fuyuhiko tries to claim that the murderer tried to lure him out and Chihiro ended up falling for the trap instead, but turns out to be the real killer trying to feign innocence.
  • Perfect Poison: A simple prick from trying to open a cabinet is enough to dose Chihiro with the fatal poison.
  • We Need a Distraction: Fuyuhiko provokes Miu with death threats into making a public scene so that he can move more freely throughout the school.

Class Trial 68-3

The MonoBucks return again as Kaede Akamatsu becomes the latest victim of the killing game, dying in a classroom while keeping an eye on Miu Iruma.

    Tropes for the Third Trial
  • Batter Up!: The Murder weapon
  • Easy Amnesia: Miu starts using a sleeping drug that induces ten minutes of amnesia and Hiyoko chooses to make use of that same drug during the murder.
  • Left Hanging: The trial ends with a couple of mysteries unexplained and Hiyoko mentioning that she learned of another murder plot.
  • Murder by Mistake: Hiyoko admits that she was trying to attack Miu, with Kaede having gotten in the way.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Miu makes various electro grenades for an unknown client with Leon watching her do it and doing nothing about it. These grenades end up being used to cause the next trial.
  • Rivals Team Up: Celeste and Sayaka perform the Climax Inference together.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Hiyoko learned through Monokuma's App that somebody was plotting murder and, while trying to prevent it, ended up killing Kaede herself.

Class Trial 68-4

A mere day after Kaede's trial, another body emerges. This time it is Kokichi Oma, dead within the Ultimate Supreme Ruler's lab.

    Tropes for the Fourth Trial
  • Cutting the Knot: When it is suggested that the Mastermind may not know who set up the trap in Kokichi's lab, Nagito points out that, with the poison gas taking 24 hours to mix and the cameras only being out for an hour, the mastermind would've had plenty of time to derail Kokichi's plan if it had actually been a threat to them.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: Nagito is disappointed by Kokichi's suicide, seeing it as an ineffectual attempt to fight the mastermind.
  • Suicide, Not Murder: Kokichi's death quickly becomes a clear-cut suicide, with the debate focusing on whether he had an ally.
  • Thanatos Gambit: Kokichi committed Suicide with the intent of misleading the mastermind.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Monokuma implies that Hiyoko's murder plot had him paying close enough attention to the students to see through Kokichi's plan.
