Linkletter reads a passage from "Nightfall" which he thinks will be particularly enticing to Connie.

Isaac Asimov recently died, and Sheldon is upset about it, but no one else except Connie, Dr. Sturgis (Wallace Shawn) and Dr. Linkletter (Ed Begley Jr.) has even heard of him. Sheldon decides to start a book club with Sturgis and Linkletter to discuss his books, and Connie reluctantly agrees to attend, in order to please Sheldon, especially after Sheldon reminds her that her deceased husband was a big fan of Asimov.

To make the book club more palatable for Connie, Sheldon decides they will read a short story, "Nightfall"note  rather than a full-length novel. At the book club meeting, the topic of Connie's recent breakup with Dale (Craig T. Nelson) comes up. Sturgis and Linkletter take the opportunity to hit on her, which she does not like.

Meanwhile, Missy wants to babysit for Pastor Jeff (Matt Hobby), but Mary doesn't think she is actually interested. Missy then talks to Jeff directly, and he hires her. Mary doubts that Missy can handle it, and suggests that Missy bring the baby to the Coopers' house so that Mary can help, but Missy points out that that's irresponsible because their house isn't baby-proofed.

Meanwhile, Georgie struggles with the fact that he got Mandy (Emily Osment) pregnant in the previous episode. He talks to Dale about it, and Dale tells him to ask Mandy whether the baby is actually Georgie's. Mandy does not appreciate this, and also tells Georgie that she is not going to abort or adopt the baby. Dale tells Georgie to tell George Sr., who has become suspicious of Georgie and Dale. George asks Georgie if he wants to talk with him, but Georgie declines.

Later that week, on the day that Missy is babysitting, Georgie arrives home after work, and wants to talk to George, but he is still at work. Missy then arrives home from babysitting, and rants about how terrible the experience was, and how she wasn't even able to call Mary because of how busy she was. Missy's rant hits Georgie very personally.

In The Tag, Connie gets a bunch of voicemails from Sturgis and Linkletter which are obvious attempts at hitting on her, and Georgie confesses to George Sr.

Tropes

  • Answer Cut: Georgie asks Mandy if she's sure he's the father of her baby. Cut to Georgie telling Dale "She did not appreciate getting asked that question."
  • Calling the Old Woman Out: Missy calls Pastor Jeff to offer to babysit, and Jeff tells her that Mary told him she wasn't interested. Missy then calls Mary out for lying to Pastor Jeff and for not thinking she was responsible enough to babysit.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends on Georgie finally telling George Sr. about getting Mandy pregnant. We don't hear George's response, but his expression suggests it won't be good.
  • Daydream Surprise: Georgie telling George Sr. about Mandy and George losing his temper turns out to be just Georgie imagining what would happen if he did tell him.
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: According to Georgie, Mandy plans on keeping the baby.
  • Imagine Spot: Georgie has one of him confessing Mandy's pregnancy to George Sr., who is so angry that he smashes the phone through the glass display case and rips his shirt. Georgie then decides to wait until later to confess.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The TV promo contains this exchange, making it sound like Sheldon knew about Georgie and Mandy's pregnancy, when he was actually referring to the death of Isaac Asimov.
Sheldon: I'm assuming you've heard the news.
    Mary: What news?
    Mandy: I'm pregnant.
  • Recognition Failure: Sheldon and Dr. Linkletter are upset that no one they've talked to about Asimov knew who he was. Sturgis and Connie at least know who he is, but he has never read his work, while she once tried to after being convinced by Pop-Pop but found it boring.
  • Shout-Out:
    • to Beethoven: Described by Missy as a movie "about a big, dumb dog."
    • George Sr. ripping his shirt off in Georgie's Imagine Spot brings to mind Hulk Hogan.
  • Stopped Caring: By the looks of Connie's reaction to Dr. Sturgis's voicemails, it's clear she no longer loves him.
