"A God-Fearin' Baptist and a Hot Trophy Husband" is an episode of Young Sheldon that first aired on April 21, 2022.
This episode picks up right where the previous episode left off, with Georgie telling George Sr. about him getting Mandy (Emily Osment) pregnant. George then makes Georgie tell Mary, who demands that Georgie and Mandy get married, and that he introduce them to her. Later that night, George notices that Mary is not in bed with him, and finds her smoking on the porch; they both want to be furious at Georgie, but can't because they did the exact same thing and had Georgie. Mary then tells Connie the following morning. Connie later goes over to see Mandy (who hasn't told her own parents) and explains how Mary and George had Georgie.
Mary, George, and Connie deliberately try to keep Missy and Sheldon from knowing about what is going on, causing Missy and Sheldon to become suspicious. On the night that they invite Mandy over for dinner, Missy and Sheldon are sent to the Sparks' house. They try to figure out what is happening, and their leading theories are that George's health is failing, and that Mary and George are getting divorced.
When Mandy comes over for dinner, Mary, George, and Connie make things very awkward for her. Mary demands that she and Georgie get married and raise their child as a Baptist, which leads to an argument between Mary and George over their marriage. Mandy still refuses to marry Georgie, and points out that her dad will probably shoot Georgie if he ever found out. When Mandy leaves, Georgie tries to kiss her, but she refuses. Connie talks with her outside, and explains that because Mary and George argued in front of her, she's already part of the family; Mandy appreciates Connie's honesty.
Georgie then runs into Mandy at work, and tries to talk with her (out loud) about the pregnancy, but she refuses. Someone overhears, and Missy eventually finds out something about babies, but comes to the mistaken conclusion that Mary is pregnant (and tells that to Sheldon).
Tropes
- Cigarette of Anxiety: George catches Mary smoking out in the yard late at night, too worried about Georgie to sleep. Mary tries to hide the cigarette, prompting George to say to her "You've earned it."
- Mistaken for Pregnant: At the end of the episode, Missy hears from someone that whatever her and Sheldon's parents are keeping from them has to do with babies. From that she concludes that their mother is pregnant.
- No Full Name Given: Mandy prior to this episode. In this episode, her last name is revealed to be McAllister, and that she's of Scottish ancestry. George, desperate to make small talk, suggests that if she was of Irish ancestry her last name would be O'McAllister.
- Out of Focus: Sheldon isn't the central focus to any of the storylines.
- Previously on…: Just the scene from the previous episode in which Georgie tells his father he got Mandy pregnant.
- Trophy Husband: Discussed. When Mandy refuses to marry Georgie for being too young, Georgie counters that when she's older, he'll be her "hot trophy husband."
