Tropes

  • Arrow Catch: Xena catches two arrows shot by Artemis.
    • Catch and Return: She promptly sends them back at her, killing the goddess of the hunt.
  • Attack Reflector: Xena constantly does this to the many projectiles the gods throw at her. She even killed Poseidon in this manner.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Poor Aphrodite. The goddess of love has to choose between her siblings who want to torture her mortal friend Gabrielle with madness and Xena who will bring the end of the gods if she succeeds. She sides with the latter and actually survives because of it.
  • Crystal Dragon Jesus: Eli again, this time under the work of the God of Love.
    • Eve could arguably be seen as this herself. She treks through a dessert as Jesus did for 40 days and 40 nights. She later gets baptized by the Baptist just as Jesus did shortly afterwards.
  • Death of the Old Gods: By the end of the episode, Aphrodite and Ares are the only greek gods still alive, and the latter gave up his immortality.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Once Xena gains the power to kill gods thanks to Eve and the God of Love, it becomes this to the Greek Pantheon. She manages to whittle them down one by one before only two remain.
  • Driven to Madness: Gabrielle by the Furies, but she doesn't show as many signs of this as when it happened to Xena.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Hephaestus and Artemis end up getting killed by their own weapons directed back at them.
  • Kill It with Fire: Hades goes down when Xena puts him on fire with her fire-breathing trick.
  • Kill the God: By the end of the episode, Xena has killed no less than seven gods of the pantheon.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Xena inadvertently struck Gabrielle with her chakram. She succeeded... until Ares managed to heal her.
  • Mortality Ensues: Ares gives up his mortality to revive Eve and Gabrielle.
  • Off With Her Head: Discord attacks Xena and is quickly decapitated for her troubles.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Xena stabs Athena with her sword, Athena realizes she's still alive. Xena looks in shock knowing that this meant Eve has died.
Athena: I don't feel a thing, Xena. You've lost the power to kill gods.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Xena's battles with the Greek Gods take her to Mt. Olympus itself for a final showdown.
  • Rays from Heaven: Eli converses with Xena in the form of a ray that falls upon her.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Averted. The two gods who end up helping Xena save Eve and Gabrielle are the only ones who survive the Twilight of the Gods.
  • Symbolic Baptism: Eve meets a man who is an obvious allegory for John the Baptist and is baptized herself in a similar way, with the main difference being it was done in the sea instead of a river.
  • This Cannot Be!: Athena when Xena mortally wounds her, realizing that Eve is alive again.
Athena: You healed them without my blessing. That's impossible.
Ares: I gave up my immortality to save them.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Virgil clearly states that he's not ready to forgive Eve for killing his father.
  • Wham Episode: Xena now has the power to kill gods, the Greek Pantheon is officially dead, Ares is mortal, Eve completed her Heel–Face Turn and Aphrodite is the only immortal remnant of the old gods remaining.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Despite this being the end of the Greek Gods Persephone, Demeter, Hestia, Hecate, Dionysus, Hermes,Cupid and Apollo are all unaccounted for despite being seen or referenced in the Hercule and Xena universe before
