Hoffs and Fuller pose as student and teacher to find the witness to a high-school instructor's murder. Guest starring Olivia Negron as Evelyn Marks, David Kriegel as Kevin Ness, Eileen Conn as Helen, Shawn McDonald as Vinnie, Katy Boyer as Megan and Kathryn Leigh Scott as Margaret. Original air date, January 15, 1990.


This episode provides examples of:

  • Ambiguously Bi: While undercover investigating the murder of a lesbian teacher, Officer Judy Hoffs is kissed by a girl, leading Judy to ask herself a few questions. Judy even admits the kiss felt "normal". And Megan admits she is "confused". Also, Megan has a boyfriend.
  • The Beard: Megan's boyfriend may be this for her. Also Evelyn's lover Margaret's husband.
  • Birds of a Feather: Both Megan and Evelyn bonded over being closeted lesbians.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Evelyn is dead but her killer gets caught.
  • Bury Your Gays: Evelyn Marks, a lesbian schoolteacher and environmentalist is murdered.
  • Butch Lesbian: Downplayed. Megan has long hair but acts tough and dressed slightly more tomboyish.
  • Closet Gay: Megan, Evelyn Marks and her lover Margaret.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Megan gets drunk at a party.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Judy is so attractive that Megan kisses her and several lesbians in a lesbian bar hit on her while she's undercover.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • teacher Evelyn Marks had "a few dirty secrets in her closet".

  • Gayngst: Megan, Evelyn and Margaret suffered from this.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Heterosexual Today?: Judy, after being kissed by Megan.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: The school guidance counselor Charles Craig. Despite his homophobia, turns out he's not the killer.
  • Hide Your Lesbians: The school guidance counselor Charles Craig insists (in his way) that what Judy is feeling for Megan after the kiss they shared is nothing more than friendship. Judy is shocked by this.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Megan, a closeted lesbian, is attracted to Judy, who is straight. One night, Megan kisses her. Judy is shocked not knowing what to say.
  • Just Friends: Evelyn Marks and Megan.
  • Kissing Under the Influence: Megan kisses Judy Hoffs while drunk.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: miss Evelyn Marks who was very feminine in style and liked to wear jewelry and makeup. Also, Evelyn's lover Margaret, and Megan.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Judy gains Megan's trust and as they become more and more friends, Megan misinterpreting Judy's interest. Also, false word spread around about Evelyn and Megan being lovers.
  • Moral Guardians: Although it would not garner the attention of later such episodes, this was the first example of a "lesbian kiss episode," a Sub-Genre of American broadcast television episodes in which a lesbian- or bisexual-identified character kisses a straight-identified character, only for the lesbian character never to appear again. Media sources including The New York Times examined the lesbian kiss episode phenomenon and concluded that such episodes were a ploy on the part of series' creative teams to generate ratings through controversy. Lesbian kiss episodes tended to appear at a frequency of about one per year, usually coinciding with a "sweeps" period in which television ratings were used to help determine advertising rates.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Margaret's jealous husband murdered Margaret's lover Evelyn.
  • No Bisexuals: All of the adults In-Universe don't consider bisexuality to be real, their preferred choices are gay or straight. And they believe bisexuals to be "confused".
  • Red Herring:
    • Megan.
    • Megan's boyfriend.
    • The homophobic school guidance counselor Charles Craig.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Judy Hoff's believes Megan has a boyfriend who is a suspect in the teacher's murder. Turns out Megan doesn't have a boyfriend...
  • Slashed Throat: How Evelyn Marks the lesbian teacher dies in the opening. Found in an alleyway with her throat slit.
  • Slut-Shaming: The school guidance counselor Charles Craig blames Judy Hoffs for Megan kissing her.
  • Stepford Smiler: Judy lampshades this when consoling Megan at Evelyn's funeral. "People trying to cheer each other up when inside, they're really dying".
  • Student/Teacher Romance: Evelyn Marks had an affair with one of her students. That turned out to be a lie as the two were just friends.
  • Sweeps Week Lesbian Kiss: While undercover, Judy gets kissed by a lesbian classmate. And questions her sexuality about it later.
  • Victim of the Week: An LGBT+ teacher.
  • Where Everybody Knows Your Flame: A popular lesbian bar called "Rain".
  • Wham Line: "Megan? ...Your husband killed Evelyn".
  • Wham Shot: Megan covering her mouth at the sight of a man bidding his child and wife goodbye. Turns out it's because he is Evelyn's killer.
