- Moral Guardians: Although it would not garner the attention of later such episodes, this was the first example of a "lesbian kiss episode," a Sub-Genre of American broadcast television episodes in which a lesbian- or bisexual-identified character kisses a straight-identified character, only for the lesbian character never to appear again. Media sources including The New York Times examined the lesbian kiss episode phenomenon and concluded that such episodes were a ploy on the part of series' creative teams to generate ratings through controversy. Lesbian kiss episodes tended to appear at a frequency of about one per year, usually coinciding with a "sweeps" period in which television ratings were used to help determine advertising rates.
