Recap / The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon S01E02 "Alouette"

Go To

Season 1, Episode 2

The group is taken in by a group of abandoned children based out of a preschool.

  • Boss Banter: Hérrison mouths off quite a bit in the shootout with RJ.
  • Child Soldiers: The group meets a community formed out of a bunch of abandoned children at a preschool.
  • Central Theme: The episode deals with a lot of characters telling lies to make things more convenient for their situation, often at the detriment of their friends and family. Daryl points out that sometimes lies work.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Daryl is all too familiar with walker heads on pikes after Alpha's pike massacre in Season 9's "The Calm Before".
    • Daryl amuses the people having him over for a meal thanks to his atrocious table manners, just like when he messily ate his spaghetti served to him by Aaron and Eric in Season 5's "Forget".
    • The children are understandably enchanted by their VHS tape of Mork & Mindy, since as Ezekiel pointed out in Season 9, children in the apocalypse likely don't even remember movies or television.
    • Astérix joins a very, very long list of unfortunate equines who suffer a terrible fate in the franchise.
    • Daryl puts down Julien to spare Lou from having to do it and later offers to do it to DuBois, like how he put down the dying Dale for Rick's sake in Season 2's "Judge, Jury, and Executioner".
    • Laurent had to be born by being cut out of Lily after her death, eerily similar to how Judith had to be cut out of Lori by Maggie in Season 3's "Killer Within".
  • Death by Childbirth: Lily died giving premature birth to her baby.
  • Dead Guy on Display: The preschool group has several walker heads on pikes.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Astérix the mule refuses to go forward once he senses an approaching group of walkers.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: In the first flashback, Isabelle is in a hallway outside the club, and leaves after the door to the club is briefly opened and closed. Viewers paying attention will notice that the distant laughter and general chatter at the club is being overshadowed by the faint sound of screaming, indicating that a Walker attack is taking place off-screen. This prepares us for scenes shortly after, when she witnesses more Walker attacks, confirming that this flashback takes place right at the beginning of the outbreak in Paris, and not some time before it.
  • I Lied: Daryl admits to Lou that he lied about the medicine helping Madame DuBois.
  • It's All About Me: RJ doesn't give a damn about anyone else, only wanting to keep himself alive long enough to eventually make his way home.
  • Just Before the End: The episode opens with a flashback showing Isabelle's life as a party girl pre-Fall coming to a screeching halt as the dead rise and start to overrun the city. Several more flashbacks throughout the episode show how French society started to collapse into anarchy over the following days as the walkers spread and people begin panicking.
  • Mirror Character: Daryl quickly sees that RJ is one to him. He’s also a redneck American trapped in France who wants to go home, and also is trying to put himself over others in his desire to get there. His name being RJ also disgusts Daryl due to sharing his name with his nephew, RJ Grimes. Defeating RJ is what makes Daryl realize he needs to be honest with Lou about the medicine and be more considerate of the people around him in need.
  • Mood Whiplash: In-Universe. Isabelle's fun night of debauchery goes south as she leaves the club as walker attacks rise and spread within a matter of hours.
  • Naturalized Name: When Hérrison introduces himself, Daryl mistakes his name for "Harrison". It takes a second try to get it across and Daryl settles for jokingly calling him "Hedgehog" when told it's the English translation.
  • No Man Left Behind: When Quinn tries to flee Paris with Isabelle, she forces him to return home to get her sister Lily. After they learn Lily is pregnant and he tries to convince her to leave her behind, Isabelle has none of it and steals the car so the sisters can leave without him.
  • No Social Skills: Laurent's sheltered upbringing shows when he takes a seat and gives a random fact about himself to his neighbors uninvited. He's also surprised to lose hide and seek so quickly, implying the nuns always let him win due to their belief in what he is; and soon becomes an outcast due to his quirks and stories.
  • Patriotic Fervor: RJ's defining character trait is that he misses America and even when he's being eaten by walkers, he desperately cries out that he's an American.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Daryl spooks Astérix to use him to distract the walkers while he and the group continue. He later lies to the children that the medicine will help their teacher since he needs a horse to make his trip, and locks Lou in a shed since he believes he is better equipped to handle the raid by himself.
  • Precision F-Strike: Quinn asks Isabelle "don't I always fucking take care of you?" Hérisson also calls RJ a "fucker", and Daryl tells RJ he's not his "fucking brother".
  • Promotion to Parent: As she promised to Lily, Isabelle became the adoptive parent to Laurent.
  • The Reveal: Laurent is actually Isabelle's nephew who was birthed from his mother Lily after she had already died and reanimated as a walker.
  • Scenery Porn: Pre-Fall Paris is as beautiful as you'd expect.
  • Spotting the Thread: Lou figures out that Daryl isn't actually a priest due to him not even remotely acting like one.
  • Title Drop: The episode's title is from a song Isabelle and Lily's mother used to sing to them as children.
  • Too Hungry to Be Polite: Daryl's lack of table manners amuses the preschool group who follow him in turn.
  • Wasteland Warlord: RJ is a Villain of the Week example, having holed himself up in an old castle after raiding the surrounding villages for every possible resource he could hoard for himself, terrorizing the remaining population in the process.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Isabelle calls out Daryl for lying to the children about the medicine. Daryl makes no bones about it since he wants to get home.
    • Laurent is angry with Isabelle after finding Astérix dead.
  • Zombie Infectee: Lily is bitten by walkers at the ambulance she and Isabelle find.
