Recap / The Nostalgia Critic S 6 E 13

Go To

Show: Sailor Moon

This review contains examples of:

  • The Cameo: Linkara is heard using his Dr. Insano voice over Melvin for a brief gag. (The Critic described Melvin's voice as "the awkward years of Dr. Insano's puberty".)
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Spoofed with Dr. Hack exclaiming "Eureka!", with his assistant responding to him.
Dr. Hack: Oh, there you are, Eureka.
  • Freudian Slip: In regards to not knowing that Sailor Moon was 14.
Critic: I swear officer... I mean audience!!!
  • Hide Your Gays: The Critic points out that in the original Japanese dub, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus are a lesbian couple, but cousins in the Americanized version. See Values Dissonance below.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: How a flashback depicts young Doug, when first watching Sailor Moon, complete with a talking penis.
  • Pluto Is Expendable: The Critic shoots Sailor Pluto, since she's not a planet anymore.
  • Self-Deprecation: The formula suggested at the end of the review is the premise for Demo Reel.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When the Critic discusses the sex laws in Japan regarding 13-17 year olds, clips from The Simpsons episode "Treehouse of Horror III" play to show Homer reacting to the Critic's examples the same way he reacted to the description of the frogurt.
    • When summarizing the formula, the Critic calls Tuxedo Mask "[the] Prat in the Hat".
  • Strictly Formula: The review is openly built on the idea that — like several other cited shows — this one can be reduced to a simple formula whose appeal lies in "safe" storytelling with minimal variation. (This involves the distinct — if not wholly unique — plots of a villain from the first dozen episodes of the first season and Serena "never" finding out who the mysterious Tuxedo Mask is.)
  • Subverted Catchphrase: "I'm the Nostalgia Critic. I reme—" (Interrupted by phone call)
  • Take That!: The beginning is this to the recycled formulas of numerous shows.
  • Uranus Is Showing: "...Bottom."
  • Values Dissonance: invoked Discussed regarding the fanservice done with the 14-year-old protagonists.
    • Also discussed in regards to Uranus and Neptune, who are cousins in the non-Japanese dub.
  • Vocal Dissonance: When discussing the opening crawl, they have a skit where Darth Vader's voice is over dubbed by Serena.
  • Younger Than They Look: When the Critic points out that he put the 14-year-old main character in the "Top 11 Animated Nostalgic Hotties" video, he points out how all the characters are drawn like they're in college or high school.
