"Clean, Part 2" is the fifth episode of season 3 of The Chosen.

Eden struggles to talk to Simon while he struggles to understand. With tensions mounting at home, he pours himself into fixing the city water problem with his new "friend," Gaius. Meanwhile, Jairus and Veronica are equally desperate to find Jesus as the only hope for their crises.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Adopt-a-Servant: Gaius reveals that, apart from his legal son, he is also raising the son of a slave who died in childbirth.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Jairus knees before Jesus, pleading for him to heal his daughter.
  • Alone in a Crowd: The final scene shows Jesus and his disciples playing in the water, Mary Magdalene and Tamar on the shore with Veronica, and Eden standing alone on the shore, watching the others and crying.
  • Back from the Dead: Jesus raises Jairus' daughter.
    Jesus: Little lamb, arise.
  • Category Traitor: Nathanael is concerned about Simon because he saw Simon talking to a Roman officer (Gaius) the day before.
  • Content Warnings: The episode begins with a warning that the opening scene may be sensitive for some viewers.
    "Parental discretion is strongly advised."
  • Crazy Cultural Comparison: While Simon and Gaius work together to fix the contaminated cistern, they marvel at the oddities of the others' culture.
  • Death by Childbirth: Gaius is raising the son of a slave who died in childbirth.
  • Dehumanizing Insult: Gaius and Simon discuss this going both ways between the Romans and the Jews.
Gaius: Don't you refer to us as dogs or something?
Simon: But you call us dogs, among other things: rats, vermin,...
  • Establishing Character Moment: We see the doctor first in the opening flashback. Then we see him again in the first post-credits scene, where he gives bad news to Jairus and Michal about their daughter Nili.
  • Excuse Me, Coming Through!: A downplayed example. After Jesus heals Veronica, he gently addresses the crowd, promising to speak with them all soon, asking them to let him go so he can take care of an urgent issue, and thanking them for their understanding. The crowd then disperses.
  • Flashback: The episode opens with a flashback to two weeks earlier, when Eden's mother rushes her to the doctor as she miscarries.
  • I Have No Daughter!: Veronica's father disowned her.
  • Improvised Bandage: In the opening flashback, when the doctor runs out of bandages, he tells his wife to pull the sheets from the bed.
  • It's a Long Story: Veronica's response when asked how she survived for twelve years. (Mary Magdalene responds, "Good stories usually are.")
  • Mobstacle Course: Jesus as to make his way through the crowd on the way to Jairus' home.
  • Multi-Part Episode: "Clean, Part 2" follows "Clean, Part 1".
  • Rejected Apology: In the previous episode, Gaius advised Simon that if his trouble at home has anything to do with his wife, that he should get used to saying five words: "You are right; I'm sorry." In this episode, before Simon leaves to work on the contaminated cistern, he tells Eden, "Whatever it is, you are right, and I'm sorry." She is unimpressed.
    Eden: "Whatever it is"?
  • Screaming Birth: Eden is depicted screaming in agony as she gets ready to give birth. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a miscarriage, causing immense strain between her and Simon.
  • Symbolic Baptism: After Jesus heals her, Veronica goes to the Sea of Galilee to be cleansed. Then Jesus and his disciples arrive; Veronica meets them on the shore, and then they head into the sea to be cleansed (according to the Pharisee) or to go for a swim (according to Jesus).
  • Symbolically Broken Object: After Jesus heals her, Veronica burns the rope and cloth that represent the twelve years she has been suffering.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: Jesus heals Veronica as she touches the fringe of his garment.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While he and Thaddeus fetch water, Nathanael wonders this about Zee.
Nathanael: Do you still think he feels murderous?
  • Tragic Stillbirth: The opening flashback reveals that Eden miscarried while Simon was away on his mission trip. Her resulting pain and grief are the source of the tension between her and Simon that started in the previous episode.
  • Trail of Blood: Nathanael and Thaddeus follow one to Veronica's camp.
  • Unwanted Healing: Nathanael and Thaddeus assume that Veronica needs a doctor. She insists that she is not hurt and does not need a doctor.
Veronica: No! Don't. I've wasted all my money on doctors.
  • Workplace-Acquired Abilities: Judas demonstrates his negotiation skills after Zebedee buys an olive grove, but knows nothing about growing olives. The former owner's son offers to teach Zebedee for 70% of the next harvest. Judas talks him down to 30%, with the condition that he receives nothing if they have to replant more than more than five of the trees.
