"Clean, Part 1" is the fourth episode of season 3 of The Chosen.

Two by two, the disciples carry out Jesus' mission to heal, cast out demons, and preach his words. But upon returning, they struggle with understanding what happened while Simon and Eden struggle to reconnect.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Expansion: Especially Veronica, who turns out to be the woman who has had a discharge of blood for twelve years. Her story gets just a few verses in each of Mark and Luke's gospels.
  • Against My Religion:
    • The Jews in the synagogue cannot help repair the contaminated cistern on Shabbat.
    • Peter cannot accept a drink from Gaius' flask.
  • Bear Hug: Big James gives Little James one after Little James heals a lame man.
  • Boring Religious Service: Zebedee points out that James and John usually fidgeted and chatted in synagogue because they found it boring.
  • The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: Little James heals a lame man. Little James sets aside the man's cane, heals him, and then stands using his own walking staff for support.
  • Collapsed Mid-Speech: Nili (the daughter of Jairus) is cooking with her mother when she suddenly collapses. Her mother initially assumes Nili dropped the knife and spoon because she wanted to measure the cumin differently.
  • Commonality Connection: Meeting at the contaminated cistern late at night, Simon and Gaius connect over shared experiences: not wanting to speak with one's boss, familiarity with sailing knots, and marital discord.
  • Culture Clash:
    • The Romans think the Jews should drag every able-bodied person from their worship hall to start fixing the contaminated cistern. The Jews are worshipping and cannot work on Shabbat, which was what the Romans expected.
Roman official: So Rome will fix your cistern and make your lives possible.
    • While discussing ways to finance the ministry, Mary Magdalene again suggests the possibility of selling Tamar's jewelry. Tamar explains that it is not just jewelry, that she wears it to honor her ancestors. Mary Magdalene mistakenly assumes it's a form of ancestor-worship, which wouldn't be befitting for a worshipper of God. The end result is tension.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: The pre-credit scenes show the disciples on their missionary journey in black and white.
  • Don't Sneak Up on Me Like That!: Simon returns home early and sneaks up behind Eden as she prepares their home to host the disciples, leading to this.
  • Hollywood Exorcism: Once again averted, as the disciples are shown exorcising demons from people with only words at minimum. At most, they use anointing oil and have their partner hold the possessed victim in place so the exorcising disciple can complete it without harm.
  • How Is That Even Possible?: Eden's response upon learning that Veronica has had a discharge of blood for twelve years.
  • Hypocrite: When the disciples are describing their experiences, Big James points out that he said things he doesn't comprehend or live by.
Big James: I felt like a fraud.
  • Insistent Terminology: Meeting Gaius at the contaminated cistern late at night, Simon addresses him as "Officer." Gaius insists on being addressed by his correct title: Primi.
  • It Tastes Like Feet: Tamar spits out Zebedee's olive oil and says it's rancid. Mary Magdalene describes the flavor as "mold, something between black pepper and vinegar."
  • Misery Poker: Mary Magdalene and Tamar engage in this briefly, each pointing out that the other doesn't know what she's been through.
  • Multi-Part Episode: "Clean, Part 1" is followed by "Clean, Part 2".
  • Obviously Not Fine: Both Simon and Andrew ask Eden if she's okay. She says she's fine.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Zebedee wonders what happened on James and John's missions, because they are not fidgeting and chatting in synagogue as they usually do.
Zebedee: I'm on to you two. Something's up.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Zee has no problem using his combat training to subdue and physically restrain a possessed man while paired up with Matthew.
  • Scene of Wonder: Several of the disciples have this response during the opening montage, staring in wonder after they've healed someone or exorcised a demoniac.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Supplies to fix the contaminated cistern could take weeks to arrive from Rome, so Rabbi Yussif orders the supplies from his family's construction business in Jerusalem.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift:
    • Since the first episode of season 1, Matthew has worn the same elegant tunic (or one of several nearly identical elegant tunics). In this episode, he appears in a more common tunic (similar to those worn by other disciples) for the first time.
    • When Simon encounters Gaius at the contaminated cistern, Gaius is not wearing his armor/uniform, showing that he is becoming more approachable and human.
  • Two Words: Added Emphasis: Gaius advises Peter that if his trouble at home has anything to do with his wife, that he should get used to saying five words: "You are right; I'm sorry."
  • Wham Line: The Cliffhanger where Jairus' wife screams his name.
