Recap / The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! S2 E17 "Ultron Unlimited"

Go To

The Vision's true origin is finally made known — created by Ultron to enforce his vision of the future, the Vision finally makes his move, kidnapping the Avengers one by one and replacing them with synthetic Avengers, cold and robotic and ultimately flawed. Can the Vision become something more, before it's too late for all of them?

Tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Wasp implores Vision like so as he tries to kidnap her:
Wasp: What do you want with me? Who are you working for? And why would you combine green and yellow with your skintone?
  • Badass Boast: Ultron during the big fight.
"You are nothing to me. One by one, I will destroy you. I will never tire. I will never show mercy. I will never stop until each and every one of you are de--!"
  • Bad Boss: When Jan is accidentally hurt in the process of Vision bringing her in, Ultron zaps him for it.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Vision saves Iron Man by attacking Ultron and unlocking his head.
  • Brain Uploading: Ultron's plan for Jan; upload her mind into a body he's made called Jocasta.
  • Continuity Nod: After the Skrulls impersonated the Avengers and pretty much ruined superhero reputations, Ultron looks set to do the same thing all over again with synthezoid Avengers this time.
  • Did You Actually Believe...?: Just as Cap is about to free Thor, Ultron blasts him and reveals his deception.
Ultron: Did you really believe that you could deceive me, Captain America? I was aware of your true nature the second you arrived.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Vision and the robot versions of Cap and Hawkeye intended to attack only Cap in the training room. They expected Hawkeye to be elsewhere on monitor duty.
  • Faking the Dead: Cap fakes his death when destroying his robot double and takes his place.
  • Fauxshadowing: When Ultron's lab burns down, the Jocasta bot is the only one shown not burning, and the episode ends without showing whether it was destroyed or not, presumably in case the show got a third season. But it didn't, so the point's moot.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The Vision.
  • Hope Spot: Captain America is about to blast off the device immobilizing Thor, only for Ultron to blast him and reveal he already knows about Cap taking his robot duplicate's place.
  • Hypocrite: Ultron derides humans as imperfect for having emotions, yet he repeatedly demonstrates emotions (such as lashing out at Vision for injuring Wasp and what he has in mind for her). Wasp even calls him on it.
  • Killed Off for Real: Ultron gets smashed to pieces one last time, and never reappears before the show ends.
  • Kill It with Fire: All of Ultron's sythenzoids go up in flames, as does his entire lab.
  • The Juggernaut: Ultron gains this additional property thanks to the Vision getting some genuine adamantium for him.
  • Little "No": Wasp's reaction to Ultron being back.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Vision after shooting Wasp.
  • Mythology Gag: The episode takes its name from the 1999 storyline.
  • No-Sell: Thor strikes Ultron with Mjölnir the first chance he gets, but it's not enough against the new adamantium body.
  • Off Screen Moment Of Awesome: Iron Man was captured before The Teaser began.
  • Off with His Head!: Thor does this to Ultron. He finds it quite satisfying.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Vision gets angry when Wasp blasts him and shoots her. He recognizes that that shouldn't have happened. Ultron also notices his behavior when Vision questions his orders.
  • Say My Name: Thor shouts Ultron's name right before taking off his head.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: After Ultron explains his plan for Wasp.
Wasp: If humans are so horrible and imperfect, then why are you acting just like one? Look at what you're doing. You're making yourself a girlfriend? You don't even see it, do you? You're becoming just like us.
Ultron: You are wrong. I am beyond your ability to comprehend.
  • We Need a Distraction:
Thor: You believe your arrows can defeat me, archer?
Robot Hawkeye: I'm really just the distraction.
  • What Is This Feeling?: After angrily blasting Wasp, Vision expresses regret for his actions. Since he's not supposed to have any emotions at all, he wonders what is happening to him and why.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: The synthezoid duplicates get shot full of arrows and blown up, on-screen and with no discretion shots.

"Ultron created me to be perfect. He thought it meant less human, to be cold and unfeeling. I too wish to be perfect, but I believe it means to be more human."
