Recap / Tangled: The Series S2E13 "The Eye of Pincosta"

Go To

When the group arrives in a new town, Eugene is immediately arrested for a theft of a precious stone ("The Eye of Pincosta") he stole years ago, and sentenced to a lifetime of servitude in the mines. Rapunzel then promises to give back the jewel in exchange for Eugene's freedom. The problem is she only has 48 hours to find the jewel, and she has to work together with Stalyan, Eugene's thieving ex-fiancee.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason behind Stalyan's Heel–Face Turn is that Rapunzel treats her with kindness and is willing to see the good in her despite all she'd done, and this feels good enough for her to want to measure up to what Rapunzel believes she can be.
  • Blatant Lies: When Rapunzel approaches Stalyan to help Eugene, she says she wants nothing to do with him whatsoever. That's clearly a lie, because later on Stalyan sneakily steals the Eye back from Goodberry so that she can return it to Pincosta herself and free him, believing he will be indebted to her when she does.
  • Brick Joke: When Rapunzel starts describing the town they're arriving in, she explains she read the whole guidebook except for the town of Zoomberg. When she later describes the Eye, Constable Lumph admits Zoomberg has something more impressive.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: As Stalyan says herself, doing the right thing has never been her priority.
  • Character Development: The episode ends with Stalyan accepting Rapunzel and Eugene's relationship and even starting to like Rapunzel. She still remains a thief, however, but perhaps a more honorable one.
  • Escape Artist: Eugene, out of habit, escapes the jail cell he's locked in. When he makes his escape known, he's put into a straitjacket and various chains, from which he also escapes.
  • "Inescapable" Prison Easily Escaped: When the constable has Eugene locked in his cell, he somehow sneaks out and winds up behind his friends with nobody seeing him do it.
  • Inevitable Waterfall: When crossing a river, Stalyan unknowingly drives herself, Rapunzel and Pascal towards one to avoid a path full of rocks.
  • Ironic Name: Virtuous St. Goodberry, as typical in fictional depictions of wrestling promoters, is anything but virtuous.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: Eugene and Lance try to pass the latter's loud whispering about breaking the former out as a joke but the authorities don't buy it.
  • MacGuffin: The Eye of Pincosta, which Eugene and Stalyan stole a long time ago and sold to someone named Goodberry.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Rapunzel's wrestler costume consists of just a green mask. She makes no effort to disguise her extremely long hair and, in fact, uses it in fighting.
  • Pro Wrestling Episode: Rapunzel volunteers herself and Stalyan to replace two of the wrestlers who walked out on Goodberry with the titular gem as payment if they win.
  • Shout-Out: Rapunzel meets Stalyan at a bar called The Glass Sipper. The place's sign has a picture of a man sipping from a glass slipper.
    • As Rapunzel enters the arena to boos from the crowd, someone calls her "Queen of Refuse".
  • Stage Whisper: Averted. Lance's whispering his intentions is too loud, so even the authorities hear it. He ends up getting everyone locked in the cell with him.
  • Take Our Word for It: The viewers never get to see Constable Lumph's painting shown to Eugene and his friends but Eugene wonders if they're mining for copper or skulls, Hook Foot says a guy in the painting hasn't been completely painted but Lance says the rest is "over there", and Cassandra says the painter has style.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Stalyan's Chronic Backstabbing Disorder has only made her predictable to a fault. Rapunzel sees her betrayal coming a mile away, so she put a note in Stalyan's gourd demonstrating this. In addition, she attempts to appeal to Stalyan's better nature, which Rapunzel knows she has. Sure enough, Stalyan relents and goes back for Rapunzel. Goes to show how much Rapunzel has evolved in her perspective since leaving the tower, while Stalyan has not, wanting to stay the same and hopelessly wanting the same goals when Rapunzel knows she has potential in her to be more.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Rapunzel makes this appeal to Stalyan after she betrays her. Surprisingly, it works.
  • You Talk Too Much!: What gets Lance and everyone in a jail cell; constantly rambling about busting Eugene out and badly whispering about it.
