Recap / Tangled: The Series S2E12 "Curses!"

Go To

Rapunzel accidentally drops her telescope given to her by King Frederic and tries to get it back. She finds it in possession of Madame Canardist, who's claiming it as her own. When Rapunzel rightfully takes it back, Canardist declares she'll cast a curse of misfortune on her. Since then, strange thing happen to Rapunzel and her group.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Blatant Lies: Canardist claims Rapunzel's telescope is hers despite the fact it has an engravement that Rapunzel knows about, and Canardist obviously never has even noticed before.
Canardist: "To my love. From your father."
Rapunzel: See? This was a gift and a reminder of my dad!
Canardist: You think every person in the world is loved by their papa?
Eugene: Oh, come on! You didn't even know that inscription existed until just now!
  • Chekhov's Gun: Hook Foot's explosive "anti-curse" potion comes back to help get the caravan across Lombard's Pass.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: Eugene tells Rapunzel that that curses only have power if you believe in them, which is how she ultimately gets over the situation.
  • Exact Words: Eugene did find that tooth in an adventure (the very same they're living through in this episode). He never said the tooth he found was a moose tooth. He merely showed it and the book's entry on moose teeth.
  • Insistent Terminology: Eugene didn't lie. He relayed select truths.
  • The Jinx: Canardist's "curse" is terrible fortune until Rapunzel returns "her" telescope.
  • Karma Houdini: Madame Canardist receives no comeuppance for trying to con Rapunzel into buying her own telescope back.
  • Magic Feather: When Rapunzel is about to give up her telescope to end the curse, Eugene gives her a moose tooth that is supposed to be a good luck charm to counteract the curse. After this, Rapunzel then gains the confidence to cross the ravine. But halfway through, the tooth is revealed to have come from Shorty's mouth, and she starts to worry that the curse will prevent them from getting to safety, until Eugene tells her that luck only exists if you believe in it.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Given the existence of magic in this 'verse, it's left unclear whether Rapunzel’s curse was completely psychological, given the unusual amount of bad luck she seems to have after Canardist puts the mojo on her.
  • Only Sane Man: Eugene is the only member of the group who never falls to superstitions. Except during the end when he keeps a horseshoe for himself.
  • Rule of Drama: When Hook Foot tells Rapunzel to meet him at midnight and "tell no one", he says it's because it sounds more dramatic.
  • Supernatural Repellent: Cassandra covers the caravan in garlic, horseshoes and incense to keep the curse from causing more trouble. The story ends with Eugene deciding to keep a horseshoe for himself.
  • Superstition Episode: Rapunzel (supposedly) gets a curse put on her. She denies it's doing anything, but everyone else (except Eugene) seems to believe it, and Eugene eventually gets her to realize that she is afraid of it, and that bad things only happened to her because she believed she was cursed.
  • There Are No Coincidences: Hook Foot becomes increasingly paranoid of every bad thing that happens around Rapunzel, claiming it's all down to the curse.
