Tropes

  • All Therapists Are Muggles: Kaia is a dreamwalker, but she resorts to drugs to keep her nightmarish visions at bay. Her court-mandated group therapist assumes her references to "The Bad Place" to be metaphorical, rather than a literal dimension of pure evil.
  • Balls of Steel: Being kicked in the junk clearly startles Jack, but doesn't seem to actually hurt him.
  • Based on a Dream: In-universe, Derek Swan based his paintings on the visions he got of other worlds by dreamwalking.
  • Cliffhanger: Kaia shows up lying unconscious in a ditch on some backwater road, Jack is stuck in Apocalypse World, and Sam and Dean are stuck in a dimension filled with monsters.
  • Dimensional Traveler: Jack is able to use a dreamwalker's power amplified with his own as a nephilim to access other dimensions.
  • Dramatic Gun Cock: Dean points a gun at Kaia's head to force her to use her powers to help them. Sam looks justifiably appalled.
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar: When Kaia is first told that Jack is the son of Lucifer, she faintly whispers "What the fuck?" Amusingly, the closed captions claim she's only saying "What?"
  • Giant Footprint Reveal: The episode ends with the protagonists jumping into a hole they find in the forest and wonder what this is. Then the Drone of Dread sets in and the camera does a Flyaway Shot to reveal that they are standing in a huge footprint. The owner of the print, a giant King-Kong-type monster, is only revealed in the next episode.
  • Groin Attack: Kaia kicks Jack in the nuts so that he'll let her go. He does release her, but he just looks startled, not in pain.
  • Hostile Hitchhiker: Inverted when Kaia tries to hitch a ride, but the drivers turn out to be Angels who were looking to kidnap her.
  • Missing White Woman Syndrome: Kaia doesn't believe anyone will look for her because she's not rich or white.
  • Mistaken for Murderer: Sam and Dean mistakenly believe Jack to have killed a dreamwalker, when in fact the angels actually committed the deed.
  • Moment Killer: Derek is having a romantic moment with his wife when Jack knocks on the door.
  • Red Herring: The last we see of Jack with Derek is Derek being overwhelmed by visions of the Apocalypse world. When Mrs. Swan returns her husband is dead, making it look like Jack is the beneficiary of a Villainy Discretion Shot. As it turns out, Derek was killed by the angels pursuing Jack.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: Patience drives all the way to Jody's house to say that something bad is coming, but she doesn't know quite what it is.
