Recap / Sonic Boom S 1 E 36 Beyond The Valley Of The Cubots

Go To

While venturing through the jungle, Orbot and Cubot come across a variety of rejected Cubot prototypes. Believing that Dr. Eggman may be after them, they turn to Sonic and Tails - the latter of whose tools have gone missing - for help.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Some of the Cubot prototypes fall into this territory; one wears a red bow tie, one wears glasses, one wears an eye patch, and one wears a bowler hat.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: When Tails finds his tools missing, he exclaims "My babies!" Lady Walrus overhears and remarks, "Welcome to my world." She then sees Stratford hanging from a palm tree and cries, "My baby!"
  • Box-and-Stick Trap: Sonic builds one of these as part of his plan to catch whoever is stealing Tails and Eggman's tools. He uses a screwdriver as bait.
    Tails: That's your plan?
Sonic: What? This is how you catch stuff. Haven't you seen TV?
  • Brick Joke: At the beginning of the episode Tails is making adjustments to his new "Auto-Adjuster" machine, and laments that he doesn't have a machine to do the task for him automatically. When later on he is working on fixing Cutebot, Green Cubot asks if he wishes there was a machine to do make the adjustments for him, to which Tails responds, "Testify, brother."
  • Companion Cube: Tails reacts to his tools being stolen as if they were his kidnapped children.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: The Cubot prototypes insist that Cubot has to stay and lead them, as he's so much smarter than all of them.
  • Hidden Depths: When the Cubot prototypes start a fire, Cubot tells them to put out the fire by pouring sand on it. Cubot then tells his prototypes that he has become good at putting out accidental fires due to having started so many.
  • Late to the Punchline: When Tails tells Sonic that all his tools have gone missing, Sonic asks him "Did you check under there?" Tails responds "Under where?" and Sonic snickers. Tails shrugs this off and goes back to angrily theorizing that Eggman must have stolen his tools... then pauses, snickers, and admits that he just got the joke.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond:
    • Cubot is a complete ditz, but since he's capable of learning from his screwups, the prototypes consider him a genius and make him their leader.
    • According to Eggman, Orbot is this, being "the perfect Cubot" on account of coming from a more advanced line of robots that he deemed a failure. He still doesn't consider it much of an accomplishment though, since "it's kind of like...being the perfect Cubot.
  • Percussive Maintenance: Subverted. Cubot tries to fix Cutebot by hitting her with a hammer. It doesn't work. If anything, it makes things worse as she sputters and sparkles even more erratically.
  • Running Gag: Everything involving the prototypes' self-destruct button:
Hat Cubot: What's the meaning of life?
Cutebot: Teach me how to juggle!
Green Cubot: What does a self-destruct button do? (He later presses it and self-destructs)
Tails: (working on another Cubot) Did another Cubot press his self-destruct button?
    (explosion)
Tails: Oh, come on, guys! (gasps when he realizes that the explosion is actually Eggman attacking and not a self-destructing Cubot)
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: The Cubot prototypes all have self-destruct buttons on their heads. They're all dumb enough to press them, which is why they need Tails' tools to repair themselves.
Sonic: Before Eggman returns, we need to move you all to a place where you'll be safe.
(The Bowler Hat Cubot presses his self-destruct button and explodes.)
    Sonic: Relatively safe.
  • Shaped Like Itself:
    • "Only a few more adjustments, and the Auto-Adjuster 3000 will be complete! (aggravated sigh) If only there were a machine to do this for me."
    • "You're the perfect Cubot. [...] Don't be too excited. It's not much of an accomplishment. It's kind of like... being the perfect Cubot."
  • Too Dumb to Live: The Cubot prototypes are always pressing their self-destruct buttons and blowing themselves up, or otherwise getting themselves into other kinds of trouble that results in their complete destruction. Worse, they can't even learn from their mistakes, so they keep on repeating them. At least, they know that Eggman would scrap them, which is why they hide and turn down going to him for help.
