"Remember, a student should not be having improper relationships with the opposite gender, especially when they're older than you. And turning a beautiful park into a place for evil is absolutely unforgivable! I am Sailor Moon and In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!"
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "An Unnatural Phenomena")

Nephrite targets the groundskeeper of a small park that is facing demolition. Meanwhile, Rei decides to make a move on Mamoru, much to Usagi's chagrin.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Adaptational Jerkass: In the Japanese version and Viz dub, the head of the construction company informs Kunitachi that the project has been cancelled, making his subsequent attack look like Disproportionate Retribution. In the dub, he refuses to back down on building the mall, but offers Baxter a janitorial position, making his assault Laser-Guided Karma.
  • Attack Animal: Under the influence of Nephrite's evil crest, Kunitachi uses the park's woodland critters to attack the demolition team. Petasos is also able to control them when she emerges.
  • Audio Adaptation: The DiC version of the episode was released as an audiocassette by Kid Rhino with added narration as part of their "Storytime Adventures" series.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Luna doesn't pay attention while crossing the street and is almost run over by a car. Fortunately Mamoru shows up to save Usagi's pussycat.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: While Nephrite's past and future victims became so obsessed with their designated hobby/talent after being targeted, Kunitachi is the only one who gains the supernatural ability of controlling wildlife to do his bidding.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like:
    • Usagi gets pissed at Mamoru for touching her kitty even though he saved her from becoming roadkill.
    • Later as Sailor Moon, she gets mad at Mars for lighting the vines entangling her on fire.
  • Crash-Into Hello: Defied. Rei tried to invoke this with her first meeting with Mamoru expecting him to fall madly in love with her right away. Alas, she ends up tripping and falls flat on her face just before she can bump into Mamoru. For salt in the wound, Mamoru tries to walk away after making sure that she's okay.
  • Date Peepers: Usagi cannot fathom or stomach the idea of Rei going on her first date with Mamoru and tries to spy on the two. She even wrangles Umino into accompanying her on a fake date just to get closer.
  • Dub Name Change: In the DiC dub, Kunatachi is renamed “Mr. Baxter”.
  • Epic Fail: Rei's attempt at conveniently bumping into Mamoru results in her tripping mid-way and falling on the street. And after Mamoru steps on her head on accident, he proceeds to leave after checking on her.
  • Foreshadowing: Just as Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon, Mamoru experiences a great level of pain during his boat ride with Rei.
  • Given Name Reveal: This is the first episode to mention Mamoru's name.
  • Imagine Spot: Rei briefly imagines how she'll win over Mamoru with her Crash-Into Hello scheme.
  • Internal Reveal: Usagi and the girls learn that Mamoru and Motoki are besties.
  • Killer Rabbit: The woodland animals available for the supernatural carnage are butterflies and squirrels.
  • Plant Person: The youma Petasos has a natural aesthetic and uses grass and vine attacks.
  • Story Arc: This would be the beginning of the "Rei dates Mamoru" arc.
