Tropes

  • Amazon Brigade: The Thunder Girls.
  • As You Know: Mordecai and Rigby's discussion towards the beginning. Justified as they have every reason to discuss what happened with CJ previously We also get a brief montage of their previous history towards the end of the episode. This is again justified, as Mordecai and CJ refuse to discuss their past history, forcing the IDC to play it for them.
  • Bowdlerization: In the UK version of this episode, the dodgeball team "Benson's Ballerz" is renamed "Benson's Bomberz" and all scenes mentioning "Benson's Ballerz" have been reanimated or redubbed to reflect this.
  • Call-Back: A massive amount of minor characters show up during this episode, including Coffee, Sensai, the Guardians of Youth, Gary, and the God of Basketball.
    • The Guardians of Youth, Gary, Death, and the Wizard once again play under the team name "The Magical Elements".
    • Scenes from "Yes Dude Yes" And "New Year's Kiss" are played.
    • Death once again uses a ball containing souls, this time a dodgeball.
  • The Cameo: As noted above, multiple characters from past episodes show up.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The Rignado, which actually works the second time around, allowing Benson's Ballerz to strike back and go on to the finals.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Bensons' Ballerz, The Magical Elements and the Thunder Girls easily blaze though their competition. The Magical Elements initially do this in their match with Benson's Ballerz, with the Guardians of Youth easily taking out most of the team.
  • Deadpan Snarker:
    Rigby: Dude, what's your deal?
    Mordecai: CJ is here.
Rigby: Are you guys gonna make out then run away from each other again?
  • Disc-One Final Boss: The Magical Elements.
  • Dope Slap: Mordecai does his normal punching variant to Rigby after his rather blunt explanation of why Mordecai froze up during the match with the Magical Elements.
  • Fan Disservice: Coffee Bean shooting coffee from his nipples again when hit and Sensai's gut jiggling after his defeat.
  • G-Rated Drug: Hot Wings.
  • Get A Hold Of Your Self Man: Benson does this, though without any hitting, to Mordecai to snap him out of his panic at having to play CJ's team.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: "I need a wing real bad."
  • Just Friends: What Mordecai and CJ decide to start over as.
  • Lethal Joke Character: Rigby, who at the beginning of the episode was specifically forbidden from doing tornados (due to being terrible at them), ends up winning against the Magical Elements.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Mordecai and CJ avoiding each other rather than simply talking out their issues creates much of the episode's conflict. As it turns out, each of them thought the other was mad at them — Mordecai thought CJ was mad about the events of "Yes Dude Yes", and CJ thought he was mad about her running out on their kiss.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Benson and the Intergalactic Dodgeball Council, who only whisk Mordecai and CJ away from their game because their clearly avoiding their past with one another and need to resolve it to finish the game.
  • Rousing Speech: Benson at the beginning.
  • Sequel Episode: To "New Year's Kiss", and to a lesser extent "Yes Dude Yes" and "Skips Strikes".
    • Story Arc: Continues the one started with those episodes.
  • Ship Tease: Despite deciding to start over as friends, CJ and Mordecai's reaction to one of the IDC mentioning the kiss is them unconvincingly denying they'd kissed if they'd known who they were with while chuckling awkwardly.
  • Sixth Ranger: The God of Basketball and the other Guardians of Youth have joined the Magical Elements since their last appearance.
  • Soul Power: Death, once again.
  • Sore Loser: Benson.
  • Tournament Arc: The episode is centered on a dodgeball tournament that Benson is hellbent on winning.
