Recap / Re Boot S 3 E 1 To Mend And Defend

Go To

Megabyte and Hexadecimal lay seige to Mainframe, and Enzo and Dot must survive a game.

This episode has examples of

  • Accidental Hero: The User picks a rather good time to play a game, unknowingly saving the system from being wiped out by Hexadecimal.
  • Annoying Patient: Even after being shot, Frisket is not the ideal patient. The doctors end up begging for the others to pick him up ASAP.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Hexadecimal blasts Megabyte off the weapon platform so she can have her fun. When the incoming game then appears directly over the weapon, Megabyte (caught by Hack and Slash) lampshades this and returns to the Tor.
  • Being Good Sucks: After Frisket is shot, Enzo immediately wants to go help him. Dot restrains him, saying they can only help Frisket by winning the game.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Enzo and Dot win the game, Frisket gets medical attention, and Cécil is shown to have survived the destruction of the diner. On the other hand, Megabyte is a more dangerous threat than ever, has plans for Hexadecimal, and intends to exploit the citizens' uncertainty about their new Guardian.
  • Brutal Honesty: Mouse reminds Dot that they have to accept the fact that Bob isn't here to help them.
  • The Bus Came Back: Cyrus, Megabyte's spy from "Identity Crisis" returns...polishing Megabyte's legs.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The opening scene shows what's left of the CPU force getting blasted to pieces by Megabyte's ABCs. Only a handful of cruisers are left by the time they return to the Principal Office.
  • Deus ex Machina: Hexadecimal is about to fire her BFG at the Principle Office when a game cube comes down on her weapon, short-circuiting her.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Megabyte crushing Glitch in the last episode leaves the keytool too damaged to do many of its old tricks. The most it can do is provide the game stats.
  • Evil Versus Oblivion: When Hexadecimal intends to open fire on an undefended Principal Office, Megabyte points out that destroying the building will cause the deletion of everyone and thing, including themselves. Hexadecimal doesn't care because it will be a glorious event.
Megabyte: You will not destroy my city!
    Hexadecimal: [zaps him] Go away.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: As the game is about to hit, Dot says Enzo just can't help himself. Mouse points out the more pressing concern of AndrAIa being with him since she's a game sprite.
    Mouse: Win or lose—
    Dot: AndrAIa goes with it!
  • The Glomp: Enzo finds out what it's like to be on the receiving end when AndrAIa does this to him. Of course, he doesn't seem to mind, even though he got slammed into a wall.
  • Heroic Vow: Enzo promises Dot that, somehow, he'll find Bob and bring him home.
  • Irony: Dot is amazed that a gamecube saved them all from Hexadecimal.
  • Jumped at the Call: Enzo's new Guardian protocol compels him to do this, regardless of what Dot tells him to do.
  • Made Myself Sad: When Dot rejects Enzo's wanting to jump at the call.
Enzo: You treat me like I'm basic. Bob knew I could do it. Bob—
Dot: I don't wanna hear about Bob! He's gone and... [trails off]
  • Not Quite Dead: Cécil is shown to have survived the destruction of the diner.
  • Previously on…: The intro reuses clips from the previous episode in order to recap the major events.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The game takes many cues from the Evil Dead franchise.
    • When rebooting, Enzo becomes a zombie dressed like Michael Jackson from his "Thriller" music video, while Dot ends up in a dress like Morticia Addams, with a chest like Elvira's.
  • Sketchy Successor: Enzo is immediately derided as a poor replacement for Bob, who the Binomes say was an adult, highly experienced, and blue. Megabyte immediately realizes how he can use this for propaganda purposes.
  • Skewed Priorities: As things get worse in the game, one of the binomes asks why they should listen to Enzo's suggestions about what to do. Dot yells at them to just do what Enzo's saying, pointing out the severity of the situation.
  • Suddenly Speaking: This is the first time that a User character is shown speaking, even if it is just two short phrases ("Groovy" and "I'm dead before dawn!").
  • Super-Strength: Frisket is first seen slamming around an ABC as if it were a chew toy.
  • Undying Loyalty: Upon seeing Enzo fly by, Frisket immediately chases after him.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: One binome openly scoffing at Enzo's capabilities in comparison to Bob's is what gives Megabyte the idea to perform a smear campaign against the city's new Guardian.
  • You Bastard!: Upon seeing the violence in the game, Dot and Enzo what kind of sick mind woud enjoy that sort of thing, before taking an accusing look at the viewer.
