Recap / Paperinik New Adventures S 1 E 22 Absolute Zero

Go To

A couple of astronauts are abducted together with their shuttle by an alien spaceship. Paperinik, Lyla and Urk travel to Saturn to rescue them.

Absolute Zero contains examples of the following tropes:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Justified. The computer on the Anthra had to objectives; Defend the crew and contact other races. After failing the first part, it spent long time in isolation, causing a form of "crisis". In trying to fulfill its second objective, it inadvertently registered the lifeforms it had contacted as threats, causing the first part to kick in again.
  • BFG: One prepared some big ones for the heroes.
  • Bond One-Liner: Deconstructed, as Lyla delivers a witty line before shooting the Android, he recovers and hit her back firts.
  • Creator Cameo: The astronauts look like Tito Faraci and Lorenzo Pastovicchio, writer and artist of the issue.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Urk takes the news about the trip to Saturn pretty well.
Urk: I guess I'll miss the match of the Duckburg Destroyers, then!
  • Didn't Think This Through: Paperinik uses his gravity amplifier on the Guardian. Immediately before the floor collapses, Lyla points out that it might not be the best idea to use it inside an artificial structure.
  • Fling a Light into the Future: The Anthra was trying to contact other planets and inform them of the danger posed by the Evronians.
  • Flash Back: Urk has several of a fight he had with a girl in his dimension.
  • Human Popsicle: The Guardian puts the kidnapped astronauts in chryogenic cells.
  • Implacable Man: The Guardian is extremely tough and relentess: everything the heroes do stops him only temporarily. At least until One blasts him apart.
  • Improbable Use of a Weapon: After his BFG is damaged in the first clash with the Guardian, Urk uses it as a club.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Urk remarks that the Guardian is just a machine with no feelings. When Lyla reminds him that she a droid, he clarifies that she is different.
  • I Was Beaten by a Girl: Inverted: Urk's flashback shows that he beat the girl (a warrior from his dimension) but he knows she let him win.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: The astronauts wake up from their chryogenic sleep with no memories of their kidnapping, since a side effect of the freezing is the loss of the hours right before it.
  • Never Say "Die":
    • One interrupts Paperinik just before he can use the D-word.
    • Later Lyla uses the term "eliminate".
  • No One Could Survive That!: Said word for word by Paperinik after they blast the Guardian off. Of course he is wrong. Lyla even lampshades it.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Lampshaded once again, when Paperinik is the only one small enough to crawl in a tube to get to the controls of the force field.
  • Replacement Goldfish:
    • Lyla seems to be one for Urk: he notes the similarities between her and a warrior girl from her dimension.
    • The Anthra' AI abducts people in order to replace its missing crew.
  • The Reveal: The starship that captured the two humans is actually the Anthra, a Xerbian ship that was trying to contact Earth to warn them about the Evronians. Sadly the alien invaders intercepted them.
  • Shout-Out: Lyla's suit is very similar to Ripley from Aliens. The robot they fight vaguely looks like a xenomorph.
  • Smoke Shield: Created when they use their BFG on the Guardian.
  • Space Is Noisy: Averted: the caption lampshades there is no sound in space and the guardian was able to sneak on Paperinik without being heard. He only turned around thanks to his "instinct".
  • Unusual User Interface: Lyla smashes the keyboard and uses her arm to download the informations she is looking for.
  • Worf Barrage: The guns One created look impressive, but their fire doesn't affect the robot in the slightest.
