Recap / Monster Rancher S3 E6: Tiger and the Mandy Cup Challenge

Go To

Tiger and Mocchi are all set to enter the Mandy Cup; however, Tiger refuses to join Genki and Mocchi in training beforehand, insisting that the best defense is a good offense. Despite the fact that he still hasn't regained any of his former abilities, like his trusty Lightning attack. His stubbornness upsets Genki to the point that the two start seriously arguing, and still haven't made up by the time of the tourney.

After fighting their way to the finals, Tiger's scornful upon seeing his next opponent is a laidback Knight Niton. But his underestimation of his opponent proves costly. When Mocchi's able to tie up the score against Fake Penquin, Tiger gets a rematch. This time, he's willing to take Genki's advice into account, building up his guts — and finally regaining his Lightning, taking down Knight Niton for the victory.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Tiger repeatedly discounts the importance of defensive measures, favoring an all-out-offensive approach that proves ill-equipped for handling Knight Niton.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Knight Niton and Fake Penguin's trainer looks like a sweet, wide-eyed kid, with Genki noting that he seems even younger than Genki himself. Yet his doe-eyed declarations that he's inexperienced are quickly revealed to be all just an act.
  • Break the Haughty: Tiger still refuses to accept that he's not as strong as he used to be, despite having forgotten how to use the majority of his moves. Losing to Knight Niton gives him a severe reality check, and he's only able to win in the rematch when he follows Genki's advice and builds up his guts before counterattacking.
  • Brick Joke: When they first arrive in Mandy, Suezo wants to eat at a restaurant, but the group needs to save money, and Genki is repulsed by the carrot-heavy menu Holly and Hare prepared. They treat themselves after the tournament — with Holly taking it upon herself to order Genki a plethora of carrot-based dishes.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Tiger continues struggling with this, still refusing to acknowledge that he hasn't regained most of his old powers yet. He finally regains Lightning during the finale.
  • Call-Back: Just like in the first monster tourney he entered, Tiger is taken in by an opponent who feigns weakness. Hare himself immediately twigs to the notion that the trainer's using the same tactics he did.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • Genki's final opponent serves as one to both him and Hare, being a young trainer whose cheerful, encouraging persona is swiftly revealed to be an act. His smugly condescending attitude towards Tiger further underscores this.
    • Fake Penguin is shown to be a Big Eater like Mocchi who listens well to his trainer, and is shown to be just as sneaky and underhanded.
  • The Fake Cutie: Genki's final opponent is a Rare Male Example, revealing his true colors through a psychotic grin after his glasses shine for the first time.
  • Kids Hate Vegetables: Genki really doesn't like carrots, and has a minor Freak Out upon learning that Holly and Hare prepared a carrot-heavy meal the night before the tourney, though he can't bring himself to complain to her directly about it.
  • Mirror Match:
    • Tiger's first fight is against a Terror Dog; unlike Tiger himself, his opponent can use Lightning. He also proves to be just as impulsive and have just as much difficulty listening to his trainer.
    • Similarly, Mocchi's final fight is against Fake Penguin, who's much bigger than him.
  • No-Sell: Downplayed; Mocchi's able to withstand Fake Penguin's Mocchi Cannon long enough to win, but is visibly exhausted afterwards, though he claims he's still capable of fighting in the tiebreaker.
  • Oh, Crap!: Knight Niton gets two in rapid succession when Tiger declares that he's Tiger of the Wind, then successfully unleashes a Lightning attack of his own.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Tiger's repeated rejections of all their efforts to help wear down Genki to the point that he snaps at the wolf, and they're still feuding the day of the tournament itself. It takes hearing Genki defend him against the other trainer's taunting and seeing firsthand the effects of their training for Tiger to recognize he was wrong.
  • Shock and Awe: Much like Tiger himself, Knight Niton has several electrical attacks, which he uses to bring him down HARD during their first fight. He nearly takes him down in much the same way during their rematch, only for Tiger to turn the tables when he regains his own Lightning.
  • Sidetracked by the Analogy: In a joke cut from the dub, Hare comments that Genki's final opponent 'smells like me', referring to his acting innocent. Suezo, Golem and Holly think he's referring to something else and move away, covering their noses.
  • Sore Loser: Even after being deemed to have lost by KO, Tiger continues to insist he can keep fighting and demands another chance. The unimpressed crowd boos him off the stage.
  • Unnecessary Roughness: During their match, Fake Penguin secretly takes a bottle opener out of his mouth and hides it in his hand while punching Mocchi in the head. Genki spots this and yells for the referee, but the other monster puts it away before they see.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Fake Penguin's defeat cracks his trainer's cocksure confidence, along with one of the lenses of his glasses. His control and patience slip further during the rematch, and when Tiger ultimately prevails, he's shown sobbing and clinging to Fake Penguin for comfort during the award ceremony.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: When Tiger is finally willing to take Genki's advice, and Genki proceeds to say the exact same thing he's been saying from the start, Tiger makes an unimpressed expression while questioning why he even bothered to ask.
