Recap / Left Behind Book 9: Desecration

Go To

With people now being forced to take the "mark of loyalty" or be subject to death, the Tribulation Force members appear in Israel to deal with Nicolae Carpathia's desecration of the Jewish Temple by slaughtering a pig within the Holy of Holies and splashing its blood upon the altar, which then angers the faithful Jews, to which Nicolae Carpathia annuls the covenant he through the Global Community had made with Israel. Following this, the Tribulation Force begin "Operation Eagle" in which they transport Jews fleeing the wrath of the Antichrist to the protected city of Petra while God protects them by opening up the earth and devouring the Global Community forces coming after them. During all this, the first two Bowl Judgments take place, and the story ends with Nicolae Carpathia having three destructive bombs dropped on Petra, hoping that he would finish Tsion Ben-Judah and all the Jews gathered together there once and for all.

This story provides examples of:

  • Big "YES!": Nicolae Carpathia, when he sees his bombers drop their payload onto Petra with explosive effect.
  • Blood Is Squicker in Water: The second Bowl Judgment turns the seas into blood. Also Chaim Rosenzweig as Micah was able to turn water into blood.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: This exchange with Carpathia and Fortunato.
Fortunato: (re: Hattie's death) Holiness, I called down fire on your enemy just yesterday.
Carpathia: You cooked a harmless woman with a big mouth.
  • Do Not Adjust Your Set:
    • Chang Wong interrupts parts of Nicolae Carpathia's entry into the Jewish Temple to defile it in order to air Chaim as Micah denouncing Carpathia as the Antichrist on TV.
    • Tsion Ben-Judah gets airtime on the Global Community network feed, which Walter Moon is unable to stop, much to his dismay as he is killed by Nicolae Carpathia for failing to stop the broadcast.
    • A supernatural version of this occurs in this story, when an angelic face appears onscreen to recite Revelation 14:9-13.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: Viv Ivins inadvertently does this when she sits on Carpathia's throne in the Jewish Temple and tearfully admits it to him, putting her in the doghouse until at least a year before the Tribulation ends.
  • Driven to Suicide: Chang Wong, for having the Mark of the Beast forced on him while still bearing the "seal of God", before Tsion Ben-Judah and David Hassid talk him out of it.
  • Escort Mission: George Sebastian is assigned to Greece to get Georgiana Stavros and Marcel Papadopoulos out of there. The mission goes FUBAR when Georgiana turns out to be a GC decoy, who kills Marcel, Lukas Miklos, and Kronos, while capturing Sebastian.
  • Exact Words: In the interrogation conducted on him by the Global Community using a lie detector computer program, when Chang Wong was asked about his loyalty to the Potentate (meaning Nicolae Carpathia), he answered the questions "truthfully" and passed with flying colors, given that the Potentate he was thinking of was Jesus Christ.
  • Forgot I Could Change the Rules: After negotiating with Micah (Chaim Rosenzweig) in lifting Bowl Judgement No. 1 (the plague of sores on those who took the mark), Nicolae Carpathia sends the GC after the Jewish Remnant.
  • From a Certain Point of View: Nicolae undergoes a polygraph test, with Suhail Akbar overseeing the questioning. When it is obvious that Carpathia had blatantly lied throughout the test, he tells Suhail that "the truth is what I say it is...I am the father of truth."
    • Although some of his answers concerning his loyalty to the people serving under him could be considered the actual truth given that he is The Antichrist and that all he really cares about is being worshiped. The only reason he would need to care about anybody under him is to have worshipers, but Chaim as Micah does point out to Carpathia that he worships himself, so with that in mind, everyone under Carpathia is expendable.
  • It Won't Turn Off: One of God's angels takes over the airwaves in the book to deliver a message from Revelation 14:9-13 to those who have taken the Mark of the Beast and worshiped Carpathia's image.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Elena and her GC buddies pull this several times on George Sebastian. But George is ex-military and is capable of taking the pain. He even mocks their techniques in the Dramatic Audio version by saying that they watch too many movies.
  • Karmic Death: Loren Hut, the leader of the Morale Monitors. After failing to kill Chaim Rosenzweig (who was going by the name Micah), simply because Chaim was protected by God, Carpathia guns Hut down, but not before Hut tells Carpathia off.
  • The Mole: Elena, a Global Community agent posing as Georgianna Stavros, who kills three believers and has George Sebastian held hostage.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Tsion Ben-Judah's reaction when he realizes he has given away the location of where the Israeli Jews would flee to according to what the book of Revelation says about the matter (the deserted city of Petra), fearing that he has messed up God's plan. He gets some reassurance from one of the Tribulation Force members that God may have intended for Tsion to let slip the location of where the Jews would flee to in order to lure Nicolae Carpathia's forces into a trap God has set up for them, which is all according to the Word of God.
  • Oh, Crap!: Buck's reaction when he sees Hattie confront both Carpathia and Fortunato.
  • Place of Protection: Petra from this story up until Glorious Appearing.
  • Playing with Fire: Leon calls down fire on Hattie, which consumes her in an instant.
  • The Scourge of God: The first Bowl Judgment, which gives those who have taken the Mark of the Beast and worshiped his image painful sores.
  • Second-Face Smoke: George Sebastian's captors in Greece do this to him in their interrogation.
  • Sequel Hook: The story ends with the bombing of Petra and Nicolae Carpathia repeatedly shouting YES!!!
  • Significant Anagram: Chaim Rosenzweig as his alter ego Micah, which really is an anagram of Chaim.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Chaim as Micah when he starts speaking the Word of God during his time as a prophet.
  • Temporary Blindness: Rayford was rendered deaf in one ear when he forgot to cover that ear before firing a powerful weapon. It was during Operation Eagle when an angel visited Rayford and healed him of that deafness.
  • Toppled Statue: Protesters at the Temple Mount destroyed the golden Nicolae Carpathia statue just as it was about to be erected inside the Jewish Temple itself, signaling the coming downfall of the self-proclaimed king of the world 3 1/2 years later.
  • Trash the Set: The Jewish Temple was defiled by Nicolae Carpathia and is never used again afterward. It is later destroyed by God in Kingdom Come and replaced with a new Temple.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Conversed with Nicolae Carpathia and Buck Williams in the Dramatic Audio version.
Nicolae Carpathia: Your days are numbered, my friend.
Buck Williams: As are yours, "my friend".
  • You Watch Too Much X: George Sebastian thinks that his Global Community captors have watched too many movies when they do things like blow smoke in his face to get him to talk.
