Recap / Jessica Jones (2015) S2E9 "AKA Shark in the Bathtub, Monster in the Bed"

Go To

After surviving an assassination attempt from Pryce Cheng, Jessica and Alisa argue on how to deal with Cheng. Hogarth gets Shane out of prison, Trish decides to burn bridges and Oscar has to deal with a family crisis of his own.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Appeal to Worse Problems: Trish's rather angry quitting speech is essentially caused by her guest trying to talk about the dangers of gluten, instead about real problems like war, rape, corruption etc.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: Jessica can be an asshole, but she's a good person, as seen when Vido's mother angrily confronts her after Jessica keeps her from running off to Canada with Vido.
Sonia: Do you think he'd be better off with you?
Jessica: No. I think he'd be better off with a mother who isn't in prison.
  • Band of Brothers: Nick served with Cheng in the Middle East and Cheng was very upset by his murder. In this episode we see how upset he is, since he's packing a serious sniper rifle to get some revenge.
  • Brutal Honesty: When she sees how Jessica blames herself for the accident, Alisa quite bluntly tells her that it was her father's fault, because he didn't pay attention while driving.
  • The Cameo: Stan Lee appears, printed on a bus commercial.
  • Cast from Lifespan: Shane is reluctant to help Jeri with her condition because his healing powers are powered by his own life force. Jeri doesn't give a damn.
  • Duct Tape for Everything: Jessica uses duct tape to restrain an unconscious Cheng, and later Alisa uses it as an improvised band-aid for Jessica's bullet wound.
  • Good Feels Good: After helping Jessica to get Vito back to his father, Alisa says that it felt good to use her powers for something that mattered.
  • Hollywood Silencer: Cheng's suppressed assault carbine just makes a soft "pew" sound.
  • Hypocrite: When Trish sees Griffin on TV, reporting live from the Aleppo war zone, she scoffs at his need to play hero.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Pryce Cheng might have initially approached it in a very wrong way, but he is still successful in convincing Jessica to turn her mother over to the cops, as she is a murderer.
  • Morality Pet: Jessica manages to do what Karl couldn't and talks her mother down from killing the man who was attempting to kill her and shoot her daughter. This comes into play multiple times in the episode, especially with respect to Cheng and his fate.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Alisa is left shocked and reeling when she beats Jessica up during her murderous rage when trying to get to Cheng. It's seeing Jessica's bloody face that causes her to stop resisting and allow the police to capture her.
  • No, You:
    Alisa: It's a bad plan.
    Jessica: You're a bad plan!
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Shane initially refuses to help Hogarth, saying that he didn't ask for her help and is now acquitted anyway. She then reveals that she could get him imprisoned again via two assaults he was never charged for.
  • Oh, Crap!: Cheng when he realizes his revenge attempt failed. And again a few seconds later when he sees Alisa at the bottom of the stairs waiting for him.
  • Once More, with Clarity: We see the assassination attempt that ended the last episode once more, this time from Pryce Cheng's perspective.
  • Rage Quit: Trish gets herself worked up while high and storms off Trish Talk in the midst of an interview.
Trish Walker: Diets. Hair volume. Space-saving packing tips. None of it matters, when there's war, sex trafficking, elusive companies conducting illegal human research on kids, no less. I could go on. No, no, no, I will go on. Racism, global warming, child pornography, murder, poverty, true human suffering that too many people refuse to look at. Denial is a warm bed that no one wants to get out of, and Trish Talk is the comforter on that bed. I keep you complacent. I keep your eyes down. But you know what? This show is bullshit. I've been spouting bullshit. Wake up, people! Face the truth. Bad shit happens every day, and every single goddamn person has the power to do something about it. So do something! I'm going to. Starting with throwing off the covers and getting the HELL off this shitty show! I QUIT!
  • Revenge: The assassin from the end of the last episode is revealed to be Pryce Cheng, who wants revenge for the death of his friend Nick.
  • Verbal Backspace: Alisa inserts herself into the search for Vido, Jessica doesn't appreciate it.
Oscar: Shit. I just lost my kid.
Alisa: We're not going to let that happen. [Receives Death Glare] Jessica's not going to let that happen.
