Recap / J-WITCH S1 E24, "Ghosts and Shadows"

Go To

To everyone's shock, the events of the previous chapter result in Jade becoming the first ever Guardian of Shadows. As she struggles to cope with this, the heroes attempt to get past a series of decoys to find the real Elyon.

  • Adaptational Badass: The previous chapter's closing implications are confirmed, as Jade is revealed to have become a Guardian with Casting a Shadow powers.
  • And This Is for...: Upon discovering that her new Casting a Shadow abilities let her hurt Tarakudo even without an onion, Jade proceeds to pummel him interspersed with this trope, listing brainwashing her, trying to kill her friends and family... and being annoying.
  • Balance Between Good and Evil: Jackie concludes that some Sentient Cosmic Force acted through the Heart of Kandrakar to make Jade a Guardian and restore the balance that was disrupted by Phobos and Tarakudo's alliance.
  • Big "NO!": Jade does this twice, both times when Tarakudo is about to finish off one of her friends.
  • Casting a Shadow: Upon becoming a Guardian, Jade gains the ability to control shadows, including such things as creating weapons or shields, or being able to sense people’s shadows (which is how she’s able to spot the illusionary Elyons, which lack shadows).
  • Crazy-Prepared: When Caleb sneaks back to Meridian, he carries a bunch of onions with him. Unfortunately, he wasn't quick enough on the draw.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Jade discovers that she can actually hurt Tarakudo with her shadow magic, so she proceeds to deliver him a brutal beatdown which she finishes by sending him and the rest of the bad guys rolling down the mountain.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Jade becomes the Guardian of Shadows, but is still as heroic as ever.
  • Detect Evil: As a side effect of her new powers, Jade now gets the willies around Tarakudo, like Tohru does.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Jade discovers that her abilities allow her to harm Tarakudo even without an onion, allowing her to curbstomp him.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Jade, already a Little Miss Badass, now has the strength of a Guardian and shadow magic at her disposal.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The Enforcers are disgusted at being ordered to go through Elyon's belongings in her old room on Earth when sent in search of her sketchbook, seeing it as being too close to pedophilia.
  • Eviler than Thou: When Phobos angrily confronts Tarakudo for how he accidentally turned Jade into a new Guardian and threatens to break off their alliance, the floating head restrains the Prince with his Psychic Powers and promises unspeakable torment if he threatens the Oni King again, making Phobos experience true fear for one of the first times in his life.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Tarakudo's corruption of Jade in the previous chapter leads to her becoming a sixth Guardian that never existed canonically.
  • Good Costume Switch: Jade's Guardian uniform is a modified version of her Queen of the Shadowkhan dress.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: When Caleb is captured, Phobos specifically points to him as the one who gave the others the Heart, when it was really Yan Lin, so even if he breaks the silencing spell on him at the time, Elyon won't believe a thing he says.
  • Human Shield: Cedric protects himself from Taranee's fireball by using Tohru as a shield.
  • If I Had a Nickel...: Tarakudo says this when he captures Caleb, who calls him a floating head thing.
  • Imposter Forgot One Detail: The Elyon duplicates don't have shadows, which allows Jade to sense that they're illusions.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Lampshaded by Phobos, when he furiously chews out Tarakudo for how his attempt to corrupt Jade just turned her into a new Guardian.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Everyone is shocked when Jade (having self-doubt issues caused by her newfound powers) tries to not come along to Meridian.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: Jade gets a growth spurt as a result of gaining her Guardian powers, rendering her roughly the same height as the other Guardians.
  • Sixth Ranger: Jade officially becomes this to the J-WITCH team by becoming a Guardian.
  • Takes One to Kill One: It turns out that Jade's new powers allow her to hurt Tarakudo without an onion.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Jade was already a tough fighter, but becoming a Guardian both makes her much physically stronger and grants her shadow magic that Word of God says is probably on the same level as Will’s currently-repressed Quintessence.
  • Tranquil Fury: Tarakudo's reaction when Phobos threatens to end their alliance is to telekinetically restrain him against a wall and very calmly tell him to not make threats like or face unspeakable horrors, which leaves Phobos afraid for one of the few times in his life.
  • We Can Rule Together: Tarakudo offers this to Jade, promising to help her learn to master her new powers. She says yes just to mess with him, only to then fight him.
  • Wham Episode: The implications of the previous chapter's ending are confirmed, as Jade is revealed to be a new Guardian, with Shadow as her element.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Will gives Jade a speech like this after she questions if she’s not a good person deep down, due to her shadow magic.
