Go To

"Don't you get it, dude? They'll always be 'at capacity' for us."
Mac

After being refused entry to a members-only swim club, Mac and Charlie decide to try and renovate an old, empty pool to beat the heatwave. Meanwhile, Dee and Dennis attempt to gain access to the same private pool in order to prove that they're upper-class.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Burner Phones: Discussed when Charlie reveals that he's been periodically buying pre-paid cell phones and the throwing them away.
Mac: Dude, this is what drug dealers buy! This is a very specific sect of lower-class, okay? This is like... this is like felon class.
  • Call-Back: Charlie wears similar cutoff jean shorts to those worn by Dennis and later demonstrates his ability to do the splits in them.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
Mac: That private pool is awesome, they have attendants!
Charlie: Oh my God, who's in attendance? How many people?
  • Due to the Dead: While stuck at the bottom of the pool, Mac and Charlie create a memorial for Jamie Nelson, a kid who drowned there some years ago, and say a prayer to prevent his spirit from haunting them.
  • Epic Fail: Dennis' attempt to run past security at the swim club immediately results in an attendant catching him and body-slamming him into a table.
  • Fan Disservice: Frank shirtless and covered in butter.
  • Friendship Moment: At the very end of the episode, Frank manages to unite the gang by suggesting a way that they can beat the heat wave "Philly-style". Cut to the five of them popping a fire hydrant and cooling off in the spray, seemingly enjoying each other's company for once.
  • Gilligan Cut:
Dee: What kind of savages throw rocks at each other to have fun times?!
(cut to Mac and Charlie throwing rocks at each other)
    • Doubling as a Stealth Pun, Dennis leaves the bar declaring "We're not popping shit!" after Frank suggests "popping open" a fire hydrant to cool off. When he arrives at the swim club, his polo collar has been popped all the way up.
  • Heat Wave: The episode revolves around the gang's attempts to beat the heatwave by trying to get into the private pool.
  • Hollywood Voodoo: Played for laughs when Charlie refers to Mac's Catholicism as "voodoo shit" and keeps interrupting his prayer with things like "alligator tooth and snakeskin spirit".
  • Hypocritical Humor: Mac and Charlie complaining about how disgusting the public pool is while chugging beers, belching and throwing their empty cans on the ground.
  • Idiot Ball: Both are already idiots, but Mac and Charlie definitely grab one of these when they ask the delivery guy to toss down a water hose they can pull themselves up with, instead of the mattress box spring they were originally using to get in and out of the pool. Predictably, the hose breaks the moment Mac tries to climb up it and starts slowly filling the pool with water.
  • In the Blood: Dennis and Dee believe that class is something you're born with and maintain that they're upper class because they had rich parents.
  • Intimate Lotion Application: While at the public pool, a shirtless Frank attempts to convince Dee to rub butter on his back, causing her to groan in disgust.
  • Lower-Class Lout: The entire gang are shown to be this, though Frank is the only one who admits it.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Lampshaded when Charlie calls Mac out on some of his more ridiculous claims.
Mac: Charlie, I do backflips every single day of my life.
Charlie: No you don't! I have never seen you — do a backflip right now, please! Can I see one? Let's see one.
  • Precision F-Strike: Mac unleashes a bleeped-out "fuck you" to the pool attendant who refuses them entry.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Charlie to Mac.
Charlie: Just accept the fact that you're white trash, alright? Take a look at yourself: you can't do backflips, you don't know karate, you're white trash!
  • Shaped Like Itself:
Dennis: You're the ones that are trash, sitting at the bottom of a pool that is filled with trash, like trash!
  • Shirtless Scene: All four of the guys during the credits scene as they're cooling off in front of the fire hydrant.
  • Slobs Versus Snobs: Played with, in that Dennis and Dee clearly see themselves as the snobs and spend the entire episode trying to establish themselves as better than Mac and Charlie, who they dismiss as white trash. However, for all their privileged upbringing it's made abundantly clear that they're really no better.
  • That Came Out Wrong: After Dee accuses the club attendant of keeping a black family around as a Token Minority, she compares said family to "dancing monkeys." She realizes what she just said and clarifies that it wasn't intended to be racist.
  • Token Minority: Discussed when Dee accuses the pool attendant of keeping a few "token black people" around.
