Recap / Inhumans S1E8 "...And Finally: Black Bolt"

Go To

The destruction of Attilan seems to be imminent and the Royal Family has to act fast to save their people.

  • Accidental Murder: A mindless Gorgon accidentally kills Dr. Declan.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Maximus, as soon as he realizes that Black Bolt is locking him up for life.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Louise's superior is initially skeptical about Medusa's story and only believes it when Lockjaw teleports in.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Royal Family is able to expose Maximus' treachery with the dome and save the Inhuman population. Black Bolt spares Maximus and reclaims the throne, promising to make changes to the Inhumans' society. However, Maximus' failsafe irreparably damaged Attilan's protective dome, forcing the Inhumans to evacuate to Earth. Eldrac is able to evacuate the population, but had to be left behind himself. Maximus is spared, but he's trapped in Attilan's bunker for the rest of his life. While Gorgon is alive, his self-control is slipping, and Karnak has to live with the consequences, including Dr. Declan's death. Also, the Inhumans now depend on the patronage of Callisto Aerospace's mysterious "Boss", with unknown intentions. Worst of all, Black Bolt reveals that there is another enemy to the Inhumans, something alien.
  • Came Back Wrong: Gorgon has to constantly fight back the urge to attack anything in sight.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: As Maximus is the only one who could stop the destruction of the Dome, his family can't kill him.
  • Exact Words: Bronaja wasn't lying after getting his vision - in the end, Black Bolt was really gone and Maximus became the king of Attilan. Just not in the way he thought he would...
    • Similarly, after her final conversation with Maximus, Auran took her leave and waited outside... just not right outside.
  • Face Death with Dignity: After admitting his past manipulations, Maximus calmly tells his brother to kill him (which he doesn't do).
    • Eldrac does as well, using the last of his strength to get Black Bolt off the moon before the Dome collapses. He calmly tells Black Bolt that the city's destruction is his own before sending him to Earth.
  • Fate Worse than Death: In the end, Maximus isn't killed, but locked up in an impenetrable bunker on the moon for the rest of his life. Or until he kills himself.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Eldrac dies with Attilan's collapse, but not before he gets everyone off the moon before the Dome comes down.
  • I Did What I Had to Do:
    • How Black Bolt explains him becoming king even though he supposedly didn't want to. Maximus doesn't buy it.
    • Medusa still tries to justify the Royal Family's treatment of the commoners this way despite admitting that they made mistakes.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Maximus is fine with having Attilan get destroyed if he can't be king.
  • Irony: Maximus even remarks at the end how he is now the king of Attilan...an empty Attilan.
  • I've Come Too Far: What Medusa tells him clearly gets through to Maximus, but he declines giving up the throne as he wanted this his entire life, instead he just promises to spare her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Black Bolt finds Maximus in the control room, the latter has realized that he can't stop the destruction of the city anymore and is horrified about it. So much that he admits what really happened with their parents in the past and is ready to be killed by his brother.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: When two royal guards are approaching Karnak, he tells them that he knows 3 different ways to kill them...only for a third guard to sneak up on him and aprehend him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Everybody remarks on Karnak screwing up with Gorgon's resurrection as a half-mindless berserker. Medusa even promises him major consequences once everything is safe.
  • The Resenter: Maximus was always so jealous about Black Bolt being king because he initially said that he didn't want to be and promised that Maximus would be their parents' successor.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Maximus gives Black Bolt and Triton a lengthy one of how they failed the people.
  • The Reveal: Maximus signed the proposal of the Genetic Council to perform brain surgery on Black Bolt, not their parents. He didn't want him to kill their parents however, he hoped he'd run away.
  • Rousing Speech: Maximus gives a last one and afterwards Medusa gives two, one before the evacuation and one after the people have all arrived on Earth.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Auran leaves Maximus after he refuses to stop the dome from collapsing.
  • Sequel Hook: There is an ominous threat out there that isn't revealed, Maximus is still alive and the Royal Family and their people are now stranded on Earth.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: When Medusa tries to make Maximus understand how much he has hurt their family, and herself in particular, he just points out how much they mistreated and looked down on him in the past.
  • The Silent Bob: Black Bolt, obviously. The two words he speaks, "Goodbye, Brother," bring down the remaining structure over Maximus' bunker.
  • The Unreveal: The ominous threat that is still out there isn't revealed. And with the cancellation it never will be.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Medusa breaks the only Terrigen crystal left for Maximus, he completely loses it.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Nobody of the Royal Family is happy with what Karnak did to bring Gorgon back.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: With the destruction of the dome, the Royal Family and their people are now stranded on Earth.
