Franchise: Breakfast Television
Companies: GMTV
Provides examples of:
- The Artifact: GMTV had become this by the late 2000s - by this point, it was strange to see a separate franchise for the breakfast hours when almost all of the other franchises had merged together to form one big company. It's why ITV bought Disney's share in the company and cancelled it, to be replaced by Daybreak.
- The Bore: BBC Breakfast Time, when compared to the less news-heavy format of TV-AM and GMTV.
- Nostalgia Filter: Harris starts off the episode by explaining that this informs his attitude to TV-AM:"Nostalgia heals all wounds."
- Shout-Out:
- The episode title is based on "Sunrise, Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof.
- The Broadcasting Act 1990 is described as having turned ITV "into a giant game of Monopoly."
- The first GMTV trailer contains a Standard Snippet of "Good Morning" from "Singin' in the Rain.
- Since Disney was a stakeholder in GMTV, the had the entire Disney Afternoon to choose from for their kids' programming. Examples given are Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, DuckTales (1987), Goof Troop, Gargoyles, Darkwing Duck and Bonkers.
- Sarcasm Mode: The Sunrise consortium's original logo is described as being "absolutely nothing like" TV-AM's. They're both renderings of a stylised sunrise as a semi-circle in primary colours.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: GMTV itself was this to TV-AM, even having extremely low ratings compared to its competition (in this case, Channel 4's The Big Breakfast) during its first few months on air and going into debt at the same time, much like its predecessor.
- X Meets Y: Bruce Gyngell's plans for TV-AM are described as a hybrid of Radio 4, Channel 4 and TV-AM.
