Recap / High School DXD Volume 7

Go To

With the school trip to Kyoto and Sairaorg's Rating Game approaching, Issei and his friends learn from Odin that Loki is plotting to cause Ragnarok in the Underworld. Accompanied by Vali's team; the Valkyrie, Rossweisse; as well as the Fallen Angel and Akeno's estranged father, Baraqiel, they must stop him before it's too late.

Tropes in this volume include:

  • Adaptation Distillation: BorN heavily distills this volume and merges some of the storylines with volume 5 to form the season's first half.
  • Big Bad: Loki's the main antagonist of this volume and stopping his plot to cause Ragnarok is Issei and Vali's main goal.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Baraqiel and Akeno save the day when they help Issei use Mjölnir to seal Loki away. Meanwhile, Arthur Pendragon captures Fenrir for Vali's team.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Baraqiel became one to Akeno Himejima years ago. She deeply loved her father as a child, but then, her mother Shuri was killed and Baraqiel failed to save her. Akeno crossed the Despair Event Horizon, disowned her father and went into exile. She makes several points to Issei about how Baraqiel wasn't around when she needed him the most, even saying it to the latter's face in this volume. It becomes a Rebuilt Pedestal when Issei helps Akeno reconcile with her father for good.
    • Odin eventually becomes one to Rossweisse after he abandons her on Earth after the battle with Loki.
  • Call-Back:
    • Koneko dresses up in a white dress and enters her Super Mode form to heal Issei's life force after using Juggernaut Drive in the same manner that Akeno used when she healed him of his dragon power back in volumes 3 and 4.
    • Remember when Xenovia was repeatedly trying to get Issei to have babies with him ever since volume 4? Kuroka does the same thing to Issei after Vali turned her down.
    • Back in Volume 3, Akeno quickly gets enraged when Kokabiel pushes her Trauma Button regarding her relationship with Baraqiel. It turns out that she still has an ill-fated relationship with Baraqiel thanks to the latter arriving too late to save Shuri when Akeno was very young.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Akeno quickly calls out Baraqiel for his greatest failure to save Shuri after they meet again for the first time in several years.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Ravel's Phoenix Tear is used to quickly heal Issei of his wounds when he's brutally attacked by Fenrir.
  • Compressed Adaptation: As BorN shifted around volumes 5 through 7 due to its Troubled Production, this volume had some storylines taken out and merged with volume 5 to form the first half of the season.
  • Date Peepers: During Issei's date with Akeno, Rias and some Occult Research Club members follow them around, all in ludicrously ineffective disguises... except for Kiba, who apparently took a look at the others and decided not to bother.
  • Easily Forgiven: By the end of the volume, Akeno reconciles with Baraqiel after Issei helps her get over what happened with Shuri.
  • Enemy Mine: Although they might be enemies, Vali and his team combine forces with Rias and her team to seek Fenrir.
  • Get Out!: After Akeno defends Issei from Baraqiel, she immediately tells the latter to get out of their sight.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Baraqiel has been stuck in a long one ever since he was unable to protect Shuri and Akeno hit the Despair Event Horizon. Akeno quickly reminds him of this when she stops him from hurting Issei.
    • Akeno herself suffers from PTSD as a result of what her fellow clan members did to Shuri.
    • Rossweisse falls into a major one when Odin abandons her after the battle with Loki is over.
  • High-Altitude Battle: The first fight of Volume 7 has everybody facing Loki in the air.
  • My Greatest Failure: Baraqiel is seriously depressed for not being able to save Shuri Himejima. It's later revealed that Shuri was hunted down by her fellow clan members due to their resentment for Fallen Angels, of which Akeno is a Half-Human Hybrid. Although Baraqiel rescued Akeno, it was too late as the latter crossed the Despair Event Horizon.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Azazel dispatches Baraqiel, who marries Shuri Himejima and having their daughter Akeno in the process. Unfortunately, it leads to the Himejimas killing Shuri because they resent Fallen Angels. When Akeno sees Baraqiel after the latter rescues her, she's understandably not amused and the two become estranged.
  • Non-Protagonist Resolver: While Issei and his friends do defeat Loki with Akeno and Baraqiel's assistance, it is Arthur Pendragon who captures Fenrir for Vali's team.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Rias and some of the ORC members when Akeno and Issei see right through their disguises.
    • Rias when he sees Loki brutally injuring Issei with Fenrir.
    • Loki after feeling the power of the blessings of the Breast God, which also unlocks the full abilities of the Mjölnir replica.
  • Papa Wolf: After Loki threatens to kill Akeno, Baraqiel steps in to protect her.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: After Issei helps Akeno work out some family issues with Baraqiel, she accepts the latter as her father for good.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After watching Fenrir biting Issei, Rias plots to exact revenge on Loki, up until she sees Ravel's Phoenix Tear.
  • Sex for Solace: A defied example occurs when Akeno requests sex from Issei to help her forget her problems with Baraqiel. Issei refuses, as it would only make her despair worse.
  • Significant Name Shift: Ever since Akeno lost Shuri, she has called Baraqiel by his name. After they reconcile towards the end of the volume, Akeno starts referring to Baraqiel as "father" once again.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Once Issei is seriously injured by Fenrir, Rias decides enough is enough and plots to kill Loki herself... at least until she discovers the Phoenix Tear Ravel gave him in volume 6.
  • Thwarted Coup de Grâce: When Akeno was in exile, her great-uncle eventually tried killing her. Rias, however, intervened, transformed Akeno into a devil, and had her join the Occult Research Club.
  • Underestimating Badassery: During the fight with Rias's team, Loki seriously underestimates Issei's powers. Issei proves him dead wrong when he uses Mjölnir to trap Loki for good.
  • Wham Episode: During the battle against Loki, Issei and the others do battle against his minions. Mjölnir then arrives, and Issei is the only one present strong enough to wield it. As he goes for it, Fenrir leaps up and bites him, severely wounding him in the process.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Once the battle with Loki is over, Odin decides Rossweisse is no longer useful and leaves her in Japan.
  • You're Not My Father: Akeno says this trope verbatim to Baraqiel when he's about to attack Issei over a misunderstanding with him. Baraqiel is understandably in a Heroic BSoD over it.
