Recap / Final Space S 3 E 12 The Leaving

Go To

Long held secrets are revealed that will change the Team Squad forever.

Tropes:

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: After Ash finds out Avocato murdered Little Cato's real parents, she believes Invictus was right and everyone on the Team Squad are killers and liars. But, she takes Little Cato with her, promising to keep him safe, because he was always nice to her and cared about her.
  • Call-Back:
    • After Ash flees the Galaxy II with Little Cato, Avocato collapses in front of the ship's force field while Gary helplessly watches on, which mirrors Avocato's death scene with reversed roles. Soon after, Gary brings back his adage from that same episode about how everyone's broken - it's just a matter of how far we're willing to go to try and fix it. To cap it off, he says this right as he and Avocato gear up to save Little Cato yet again.
    • Earlier, when Sheryl asks Little Cato how old he is, he replies that he's "technically 74", which references the events of "The Other Side" in Season 2, in which Little Cato was trapped in a time shard for 60 years and even after the anomaly stopped, still remembered the whole period.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Gary working on the satellites during his prison sentence in the Galaxy One come in handy, when it is revealed those satellites were actually prototypes for the Hyper-Trans Dimensional Bridge they tricked him into working on without his knowledge or consent, allowing him to instruct the rest of the crew on how to wire them properly.
  • Darkest Hour: And how! The Hyper-Trans Dimensional Bridge is damaged for good, the team's Final Space poisoning has gotten worse, and now Ash has betrayed the team and is taking Little Cato to Invictus.
  • Downer Ending: Ash officially betrays the Team Squad and takes off with Little Cato.
  • From Bad to Worse: First the Team Squad's efforts to reactivate the Hyper-Trans Dimensional Bridge fail, overloading it and presumably breaking it for good. Then, Ash finds out Avocato murdered Little Cato's real parents and goes insane, betraying the crew and kidnapping Little Cato in a misguided attempt to "protect" him.
  • Internal Reveal: Ash finds out by eavesdropping on Gary and Avocato’s conversation that the latter killed Little Cato’ parents. Unfortunately, this sends her over the edge, and even attempts to murder them, convinced that Invictus was right all along. To twist the knife even further, she tells the truth to Little Cato.
  • Irony: As Gary realizes himself, if he had never tried to flirt with Quinn when they first met and got arrested, he never would have learned how to fix the satellites to help everyone escape Final Space.
  • Mama Bear: Sheryl does not take it well when she learns that Ash is trying to abduct Little Cato, showing that her newfound protectiveness of Gary also applies to Gary's adopted son.
Sheryl: No one. Is taking my grandson!
  • Messy Hair: Gary and Quinn’s hair gets very messy and all over the place after they have sex. When questioned by Biskit about it, they lie and say that the hair mess was caused by a nest of bees.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The whole mess the crew is left in by episode's end could've been almost entirely sidestepped had Avocato fessed up in private - or at least, not around Ash - to his "son" about what really happened to his mother.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Little Cato asking Avocato about his mother. To the former, it's just a nice bonding moment with his dad, while to the latter, it's just further reinforcing his guilt over what he did and the lies he's still telling to keep the horrible truth from his son (in particular, Little Cato admitting he "figured" that he looks like his mother since he "looks nothing like" Avocato).
  • Oh, Crap!: Both Gary and Avocato have one after Ash finds out the latter’s Dark Secret.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Ash gets one in before hurling Gary and Avocato out into space for their sins.
Avocato If you take [Little Cato], I promise you - I will kill you!
    Ash: How...when you're already DEAD?!
  • Sanity Slippage: Ash totally loses her mind and turns on the Team Squad. It's even lampshaded by Little Cato, who says that Ash appears to be "losing it".
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: Gary and Quinn's sex is communicated by Gary's sweater falling to the floor and a cut to the next scene.
  • Wham Episode: Several big things happen in this episode:
    • Avocato’s secret about being the killer of Little Cato’s real parents gets exposed to the whole Team Squad.
    • Ash turns on the Team Squad and abducts Little Cato.
    • The Final Space poisoning is worsening: by the end of the episode, both Gary and Avocato have Volcanic Veins on their faces.
  • Wham Shot: Ash coming within vicinity of Avocato blurting out his greatest crime is the catalyst for things barreling somehow even more downhill from here than they already have for the Team Squad.

Ash Loses It

Upon hearing Avocato tell Gary that he killed Little Cato's real parents, Ash loses whatever respect she has for the Team Squad and fully commits herself to Invictus, announcing that she's going to take Little Cato away with her before throwing Gary and Avocato into space.
