Recap / Fanboy And Chum Chum S 2 E 4 Crib Notes

Go To

Kyle has trouble studying for his test to be readmitted to Milkweed, so he uses a spell to cheat; but it causes him to become a baby and Fanboy and Chum Chum have to get him to fall asleep for the spell to work.

Tropes:

  • Baby Talk: Subverted. After Kyle falls asleep and returns to normal age, he begins talking strangely, assuming the spell backfired and he's talking like a baby. But then the boys notice something familiar about those words: he is saying test answers in code, revealing the crib notes are verbal.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Kyle ends up failing anyway because of not using a No. 2 wand.
  • Bottle Episode: Taking place entirely at Kyle's house.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: The three books Kyle had to study from are named, in order, "Introduction to Spells and Charms", "Wandwork 101", and "Getting Familiar With Familiars".
  • Call-Back: In "Wizboy," Kyle mentions that he was expelled from Milkweed Academy for turning one of his professors into raspberry flan. He shows in this episode when Fanboy and Chum Chum try to give him something to eat while he studies.
    • When Fanboy and Chum Chum are trying to help Kyle sleep, Chum Chum uses the phrase "take the cloud ferry to Sleepytime Island." Presumably, he learned this terminology back when he and Fanboy wound up in Ms. Olive's kindergarten.
  • Chainsaw Good: As Fanboy and Chum Chum toss baby Kyle back and forth, this later shifts to them juggling him with a bunch of chainsaws.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Kyle.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: The third book Kyle had to study is called "Getting Familiar With Familiars".
  • Double Meaning: Not only does the crib notes spell help you cheat, but it temporarily turns you into a baby as well.
  • Evil Laugh: Kyle lets out two of them during his rant after passing the M.A.T., unaware that his victory will be cut short.
  • Eye Cam: Occurs when Kyle is waking up after finally falling asleep to make the spell work.
  • Foreshadowing: After Flan leaves and Kyle panics what to do, Fanboy and Chum Chum suggest he'd fail so he'll stay with them, before coming up with the idea to cheat. At the end of the episode, he passes, but his answers are immediately voided due to not using a No. 2 wand.
  • Fountain of Youth: The crib notes spell turns wizards into babies.
  • Funny Background Event: Shortly before Flan's departure, he drips some jam; you can see Chum Chum taste one of the drips.
  • Fun with Acronyms: M.A.T. - Milkweed Admittance Test.
  • Getting the Baby to Sleep: Kyle must go to sleep in the enchanted crib for the spell to work, but it takes the boys ridiculous methods to get him to do so.
  • Given Name Reveal: This episode reveals Kyle's last name — Bloodworth-Thomason.
  • Literal-Minded: The crib notes spell. Also, Fanboy takes the idea "rock to sleep" rather literally when they have a rock concert in the basement.
  • Magical Incantation: Kyle chants one to initiate the crib notes spell:
Cheetah, cheetah, pumpkin eatah! Cribbity, bibbity, oh whop, bam, notes!
  • Overnight Age-Up: After Kyle sleeps for five minutes, he awakens next morning back to normal.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: When Kyle says when he passes the exam, he will be readmitted to Milkweed, which he phrases as "I intend to re-matriculate at my alma mater post-haste." Chum Chum lampshades this: "Kyle's talking gibberish."
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Kyle passes the test, but his answers are rendered null and void because he didn't use a No. 2 wand.
  • Spoof Aesop: Don't start your test until you're sure you have the correct writing equipment.
  • Status Quo Is God: In the end, Kyle ends up failing anyway because he didn't use a No. 2 wand while taking it.
  • The Unintelligible: When Kyle wakes up after being turned back to normal, he ends up saying weird phrases which appear to be baby talk. They turn out to be test answers thanks to the spell.
  • Truth in Television: Cheating on a test will cause your answers to be voided.
  • Wham Episode: Professor Flan is released from his flan prison as of this episode.
  • With a Foot on the Bus: Kyle passes his test and is about to depart for Milkweed, but upon learning he didn't use a No. 2 wand, all his answers are voided and the re-admittance is denied.
