Recap / Duck Tales S 1 E 28 Duckworths Revolt

Go To

After Duckworth is fired by Scrooge, he and the boys are abducted by plant aliens and enslaved aboard their ship along with dozens of other kidnapped aliens.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Alien Abductees Fight Back: Played with; the boys definitely want to fight their alien captors, but Duckworth urges them to cooperate, leading them to accuse him of cowardice. Later, it turns out Duckworth was plotting against the aliens and just didn't want to fight them haphazardly. He ultimately leads the revolt.
  • Are You Sure You Can Drive This Thing?: The boys grab an alien vehicle. At one point, one of them asks the other, "Do you know how to drive this thing?" The other replies that he thought someone else was driving.
  • Benevolent Boss: When the boys accidentally get Scrooge's butler Duckworth fired, they apologize and tell him they'll miss him but still think any job "is better than being Uncle Scrooge's slave"; Duckworth says indignantly, "I loved serving Mr. McDuck!"
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Duckworth.
  • Dramatic Drop: Duckworth drops his cloth when Scrooge releases him from his service.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Scrooge's attempt to drive in the last scene. It's one reason why he rehires Duckworth.
  • Enemy Mine: Near the end, the plant aliens and their captives have to cooperate to make sure the ship crashes in a way that doesn't kill everyone aboard.
  • Happiness in Slavery: The boys accuse Duckworth of being happy in servitude when he initially doesn't make any kind of move against the aliens. It turns out he was just planning and biding his time.
  • Happiness in Minimum Wage: A plot point; the story starts when the boys tell Duckworth that he could probably get much more from another, less tight-fisted, employer. Scrooge hears this and, thinking he's doing Duckworth a favor, tells him to go make lots of money. Duckworth finds this more depressing than encouraging, because he loves his current post.
  • Homeworld Evacuation: The Plant Aliens had to flee their planet during a devastating ice age, with the scene subtly implying that many of them had to stay behind to make room for their children. Since then, they have traveled the universe, trying to find a new home and enslaving people to help them subsist until then.
  • Lampshade Hanging: About to crash land, one of the boys remarks this is happening to them without Launchpad being around.
  • May the Farce Be with You: The episode begins with a parody of the Star Wars opening crawl, "A long time ago, in a garden far, far away . . . ."
  • Plant Aliens: The aliens enslaving the others are vegetable-like.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: The Brigadier turns out to be this. Despite leading the vegetable aliens in kidnapping and enslaving races, he does it to take care of their children and is visibly guilty about having to do so. He is willing to listen to Duckworth about freeing the slave aliens, only being stopped by some of his own generals going turncoat. By the episodes end, he asks the other aliens for forgiveness and swears that he will lead his people to fighting against slavery.
  • Shout-Out:
  • The Starscream: The garlic and squash aliens decide they want to usurp the Brigadier’s leadership, at an especially inconvenient time given the Brigadier is considering to release the slaves. Ultimately the two are beaten and seem to have been demoted to basic workers in the end.
  • Tail Slap: One of the alien slaves resembles a humanoid alligator and decks one of the sale overseers with his tail.
  • Thrown Out the Airlock: One of the aliens tries to push Duckworth out the door into space.
  • Wallet Moths: Duckworth relates his duties of the day to Huey, Dewey and Louie, noting that he was due to dust off Scrooge's credit cards. Duckworth holds up Scrooge's wallet, and the viewer can see several moths fluttering out.
  • Whip of Dominance: The Plant Aliens use their Vine Tentacles to whip several of the slaves as "encouragement" to work harder, including the nephews - twice!
