Tropes

  • All There in the Manual: The pop-up trivia of the enhanced episode reveals several key details about Ghostfreak, his homeworld of the Anur System, and several facts that would become important later in the sequels.
    • Ghostfreak's real name and identity is Zs'Skayr, the High Ecto Lord of Anur Phaetos. He had learned about the Omnitrix when one of Vilgax's scout probes crashed on Anur Phaetos and he read its data files. Using the probe to leave the planet and search the galaxy by possessing many beings, Zs'Skayr would eventually encounter Myaxx, Azmuth's assistant, who was collecting DNA samples with the Omnitrix on Flors Verdance. Zs'Skayr possessed the Flourana being sampled, getting his DNA sampled as well, which allowed him to copy himself into the Omnitrix because an Ectonurite's consciousness existed in even a tiny strand of DNAnote . However, because adjusting to the Omnitrix was difficult, Zs'Skayr's personality couldn't take control of Ben right away. Since Ben was the first to wear the Omnitrix after Zs'Skayr's DNA was sampled, Zs'Skayr needed Ben's human DNA to become whole, explaining why he needed to merge with him. Zs'Skayr would take control of Ben once off-screen when the latter turned into Ghostfreak to sneak into a horror film, allowing him to contact Dr. Viktor and tell him of his plans to block out Earth's sun with the Corrodium beam.
    • The Ectonurites used their ghost-like powers to slowly become rulers of every planet in the Anur System.
    • The yellow color (which would signify capture mode) means the Omnitrix just collected Dr. Viktor's alien DNA.
    • Transylians (Dr. Viktor's race) learned how to harness the lightning from their planet's giant storms with their own electric powers.
    • The combination of Corrodium's power and danger make it extremely rare and valuable throughout the galaxy.
    • The generators on Transylians' backs aren't machines but natural metallic-organic growths.
    • Thep-Khufans are the only beings who can handle Corrodium without special protection, thus explaining why the mummy was send to collect corrodium.
    • Transylians' bio-electricity discharge is naturally green.
    • Other planets in the Anur System include Millgan, G'rrnay, and Ormerownote .
    • Cannonbolt's tough exo-shells can take twice the heat of reentry.
  • Bad Boss: While Viktor is less likely to piss him off than the circus trio is, he's still subject to Ghostfreak's punishments should he screw up.
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: Upgrade, Ghostfreak, Viktor, and the mummy prove that their species can survive in a vacuum in this episode.
  • Beam-O-War: Between Ghostfreak's psychic laser and Frankenstrike's electric attacks. Ghostfreak wins.
  • Briar Patching: Gwen tricks Ghostfreak and the mummy into removing her protective suit, allowing her to surprise them with an unimpeded magical attack.
  • The End... Or Is It?: Team Tennyson has defeated the alien monsters, saved Earth, and learned a lesson on teamwork, just in time for the Omnitrix to reveal that Ghostfreak's DNA has been re-recorded.
  • I Want Them Alive!: Ghostfreak wants Ben alive to possess his body, causing friction between him and Viktor that allows Ben to escape.
  • Locking MacGyver in the Store Cupboard: For both the heroes and the villains.
    • Grey Matter is forced to hide in Viktor's control room, allowing him to contact Max and Gwen and build a mini-sun gun to ward off Ghostfreak.
    • Upgrade leaves Viktor to drift off into space on a half-built rocket. Viktor ends up plugging his generator into the rocket and makes it functional, though this does keep Viktor from interfering for most of the climactic battle.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Viktor does this several times.
    • He tries to kill Ben, causing Ghostfreak to attack him in retaliation and lets Ben escape as Grey Matter in the confusion.
    • He grabs Ben by the Omnitrix early in the episode, unlocking Frankenstrike and thus giving Ben the exact form he needs to fight up in the space station.
    • His spaceship battle with Max gives the latter the opportunity to destroy the satellite receiver with the momentum Viktor gave him.
    • He uses the teleportation gun in an attempt to get rid of Ben, which backfires and sends both him and the mummy to parts unknown.
  • The Night That Never Ends: Ghostfreak's plan is to create a corrodium energy shield around the sunlit side of Earth, blocking the sun and allowing him free reign over the planet. It also turns all the humans and animals into mutant monstrosities as a side effect.
  • One-Winged Angel: Ghostfreak gains spikes on his shoulders, sharper claws and teeth and longer tendrils when out in space.
  • Post-Climax Confrontation: After the evil plan is thwarted, Ghostfreak appears on the shuttle to try and take over Ben once more. The latter doesn’t even have to transform in order to win.
  • Previously on…: Covers Benwolf, Under Wraps and The Return.
  • Ramming Always Works: Max destroys the space station's receiver by ramming a space shuttle into it, causing a cascade that detonates the other receivers and deactivates the corrodium shield.
  • Rocketless Reentry: With the space shuttle falling apart around them, team Tennyson falls back to Earth inside of Cannonbolt.
  • Space Is Noisy: Ghostfreak and Frankenstrike have no trouble speaking while in space.
  • Super Mode: In the darkness of space, Ghostfreak gets bigger, spikier, and reveals a Chest Blaster.
  • Team Spirit: Zig-Zagged. The overall Aesop of the two-parter is that Ben needs to work with Gwen and Max as a team. Although Ben did need help at timesnote , he also did most of the legwork in discovering Ghostfreak's plan, keeping the villains at bay, and allowing the team to survive a fall from orbit.
  • Thrown Out the Airlock: While fighting the mummy, Gwen accidentally knocks herself and Max into the airlock, giving the mummy the opportunity to get rid of them in this way.
  • Toilet Teleportation: Gwen defeats the mummy by knocking it into the space station's toilet, which like in real life, is vacuum powered and leads out into space. The mummy joins Ghostfreak in fighting Frankenstrike shortly afterward.
  • Uncertain Doom: The werewolf is last seen next to the satellite receiver in New Mexico just before it explodes, leaving it unknown if he survived or not.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?:
    • Both Dr. Viktor and the mummy are last seen in the Classic series sucked into Dr. Viktor's portal. While Dr. Viktor does make a return in Ultimate Alien and Omniversenote , the mummy is never seen again.
    • While the Pop-Up Trivia from the enhanced episode reveals Ghostfreak's true identity, name, and backstory, nothing is said about what became of the original Zs'Skayr after his DNA was first sampled.
