Recap / Beast Wars S 1 E 22 The Low Road

Go To

When Rhinox is infected with a cybervirus, Dinobot and Rattrap must track down the countervirus, assuming they don't turn on each other first.

Tropes:

  • Bad Boss: Dinobot takes Tarantulas hostage to try and negotiate with Megatron. Megatron shoots Tarantulas out of Dinobot's hands and lampshades what a stupid tactic that was (although Dinobot may have just been creating a distraction for Rattrap's next move).
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Dinobot and Rattrap, shortly before punching Tarantulas silly.
  • Breather Episode: Pretty obvious at this point.
  • Butt-Monkey: Tarantulas puts Waspinator to shame in this episode. He suffers far more physical abuse, and even gets completely blown to pieces in a style not unlike what the wasp usually goes through.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The beans seen growing around the Maximal base at the beginning prove unexpectedly instrumental in foiling the Predacons' plans.
  • Computer Viruses Are Computer Illnesses: The cybervirus that Tarantulas uses to infect Rhinox causes him to sneeze and become weak.
  • Distant Reaction Shot: Rhinox's fart can be seen from orbit.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Inferno, the poster child for Undying Loyalty, is among the Predacons scooting away from Megatron to avoid the blast radius of Rhinox “attack.”
  • Fartillery: How Rhinox dispatches the Predacons.
  • Flanderization: Though Rattrap and Dinobot always bicker, they really fight in this episode.
  • Foreshadowing: Blackarachnia mentions that Tarantulas has encrypted all data on his computers.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • Among the items that Scorponok and the others find in Tarantulas' lab is one of Waspinator's dismembered arms.
    • There's also a dart-riddled picture of Megatron.
  • Hostage Situation:
    • Dinobot takes Tarantulas hostage. It doesn't work since Megatron has no regard for his troops' lives.
    • Megatron attempts the same- with more success- by threatening Rhinox's life through destroying the counter-virus unless the Maximals surrender.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Blackarachnia outright asks Megatron why he talks to himself so frequently.
  • Never My Fault: Rhinox's infection happens in large part due to Dinobot and Rattrap's fighting, but neither of them take any personal responsibility for it and blame the other for everything.
  • The Nose Knows: How Dinobot locates Tarantulas.
  • Shoot the Hostage: Dinobot tries to make Megatron give him the antidote in exchange for Tarantulas. Megatron doesn't fall for it. Chronic Backstabbing Disorder at its finest.
Dinobot: (holding Tarantulas) Do not fire, Megatron! I have a hostage!
Megatron: Why, so you do. (shoots Tarantulas)
  • Shout-Out:
    • Dinobot mentions Silicon Valhalla.
    • When the Maximals enter Tarantulas' lair, they reenact the poster of A New Hope complete with Airazor cuddling Optimus' leg as Leia did Luke's.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Why does Megatron talk to himself? He prefers intelligent conversation.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Dinobot and Rattrap spend the whole episode working together on some task, whether it's cutting down wild bean vines around the base, or looking for the countervirus. They also spend the whole episode screaming at and insulting each other with more vitriol than ever.
  • Thinking Out Loud: Blackarachnia comments on Megatron's habit of talking to himself.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Megatron when he sees Rhinox is going to use Fartillery.
    Megatron: NO! Not that!
  • Toilet Humor: The episode is built on it.
  • Trash the Set:
    • The Axalon's bridge gets another notch of this on its belt, this time thanks to Rhinox's hiccupping due to Tarantulas' disease. Rattrap is seen at the end fixing it with Dinobot.
    • Tarantulas' lab falls victim to Rhinox's atomic Fartillery, rendering it to rubble with a giant gaping hole in the ceiling.
  • Trigger-Happy: When they detect the Maximals coming, the Predacons open fire blindly into the tunnel. It totally ruins any chance of an ambush as it lets Rattrap and Dinobot see that they're expected.
Megatron: Hold your fire, you fools. Wait for a target!

Megatron

With such hasty and hotheaded soldiers, it's understandable that Megatron prefers to talk to himself than to converse with his comrades.
