Airdate: October 12, 1993

Hitchcock Opening: The Warners parody Alfred Hitchcock's famous opening to his television show

Opening Line: "Citizen Kane-y"- Yakko

Hearts of Twilight: the Warners are given a task by Plotz: stop an out of control and over-budget director!

The Boids: the Goodfeathers are hired as Stunt Birds by Alfred Hitchcock for his new thriller.

Hearts of Twilight contains examples of:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Yakko lists the skills of the siblings and himself thusly: Dot's skill is cuteness, Wakko's is the mallet, and his is... two paddleballs at once!
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Mr. Director wants an ending so badly that he accepts when the Warners say they have one for him. The ending turns out to be hitting him with a giant mallet.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The accountants sent after the director have been brainwashed into working for him and seeing him as a visionary.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Parodied with Yakko's paddle ball skills. He didn't highlight them for plot reasons, but because it's fun and he wanted to show off.
  • Closed Circle: Parodied. Mr. Director won't let anyone leave until he gets his ending, and locked the studio bigwigs out of the soundstage. It's all still in the middle of the Warner (Universe Studios?) lot, but is treated like a remote location.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Dot's special skill is cuteness, which she uses on the accountants to be set free.
Dot: Some girls got it, some girls don't.
  • Expy: Mr. Director is one of Jerry Lewis.
    • Also Mr. Crazy Person is clearly Dennis Hopper's character from Apocalypse Now, man!
  • Godzilla Threshold: Plotz decides to send in the Warners when he hears that the accountants sent in to stop the director never returned.
  • Mood-Swinger: Mr. Director.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Throughout the episode, a parody of "The End" by The Doors is heard (which was featured in Apocalypse Now). At the end, the Warners run over Jim Morrison.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: As the Director walks away from the Warners, they suddenly appear in front of him. As he rants about witnessing this, he briefly points back to where they were, and for that brief second, they're still there.
  • Oh God, with the Verbing!: Taken to the extreme: "Hoyl! How'd you?! With the going?! You were there but here now! You are! For me to see! How'd you do?!"
  • The Password Is Always "Swordfish": Yakko realizes the password is "Freunleven" due to the brainwashed accountants constantly chanting it.
    Dot: How'd you know?
Yakko: It just came to me.
  • Prima Donna Director: Mr. Director takes this to a whole other level. He will have his ending and no one leaves until he gets it.
  • Travel Montage: Parodied. As the Warners drive around the lot, Yakko in voice over explains that Wakko is driving, as the line moves erratically on the map. Then Yakko says that he's driving now, and the line stabilizes.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Hearts of Twilight references Heart of Darkness and its adaptation Apocalypse Now, as well as the documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse that chronicles that film's Troubled Production.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Mr. Director is bald and more heavyset in this short, despite acting exactly like he does in all the others, since he's supposed to be the Marlon Brando character from Apocalypse Now.

The Boids contains examples of:

Closing Tower Gag: "Flameal!"- Yakko, Wakko, and Dot
