Playing With / Heavy Equipment Class

Go To

Basic Trope: A class or character that stands out due to being capable of using weapons and/or armour too heavy for others.

  • Straight:
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • Clay might carry the heaviest armor around, but others can wear parts of the armor that's usually meant for him (just not the full armor set).
    • Clay's armor is great, but not in comparison to the Tin Tyrant Heavily Armored Giant Mooks of Emperor Edward Evulz CXV.
    • PFC Finnigan merely totes around an LMG and wears more body armor than the rest of his squad.
  • Justified:
    • Clay's equipment was issued to him by the military, and the claymore's an inherited gift.
    • Clay stole the equipment.
    • Clay, a mercenary, had trained his body well in order to be strong enough to carry such heavy armor.
    • Clay, a mercenary, initially couldn't move his body under such heavy armor, but he grew strong because he wore it all the time.
    • PFC Finnigan's equipment is standard issue, explicitly for guys like him.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice is classified as the only character who can't wear armor of any kind, making her rely on magic instead.
    • Heavily Armored Mook
  • Subverted: While there's promo art of Clay in a mighty, metallic suit of armor, in game, he doesn't even look as powerful as he is, instead being built like a lithe Pretty Boy.
  • Double Subverted: Well, in the sequel, DCXXI, Clay's become very built and muscular, meaning he can finally wear that sweet armor in the promo art.
  • Parodied: Claire is actually a Token Mini-Moe hiding under that gigantic suit of armor.
  • Zig-Zagged: Whether or not Clay is this trope or not is depending on how you play him.
  • Averted: There is no such character of the sort.
  • Enforced: During the Beta verisons of the game, playtesters constantly lost in missions due to the party members always having awful HP and DEF, even if they had great ATK. Clay was added as a sort of lightning rod to take all the damage. And y'know what, since this is a tank-y member, why not really make him the strongest of the bunch (in terms of physical damage) to seal the deal?
  • Lampshaded: "Look fellas, if ya need someone tae carry yer stuff, turn tae me. I've been luggin' around in this hot suit of armor, what makes ya think I can't be a great pack mule?"
  • Invoked:
    • Clay decides to bulk up and get powerful in order to take more damage for the team, and he also picks out thicker plated armor to increase his defense.
    • The Tropeland Defense Force mandates heavy weaponry training to people whose height are above 6'3" (1.9 m) and whose weight are above 200 lbs (90.7 kg).
  • Exploited:
    • Clay can use the muscles he built up that were needed to wear / built up from wearing the armor to pick up chicks.
    • Claire can hide in a suit of armor and pull a Sweet Polly Oliver by using this trope. Hopefully nobody would try and pull a Sweet on Polly Oliver on her...
    • Clay is used as the tank who is constantly taking damage and coming out no worse for wear. He could also double as a damage AND a tank with his claymore.
    • Clay willingly acts as an Item Caddy and becomes the party's pack mule for supplies.
    • Due to being such a huge target, PFC Finnigan's constantly used as a sort of damage sponge and magnet so that others can kill the enemies while they focus on him.
  • Defied: "Screw being big and slow all the time! Speed's the cool new thing on the block!"
  • Discussed: "We're always going to need a tank in the battlefield, otherwise we'll always fall. This tank also needs to be a powerhouse, and deal damage to be considered enough of a threat by the enemies. Hmmm... We've got Clay in tow. Why not suit him up in the heavy armor?"
  • Conversed: "Phew! Good thing I've got Clay to take the damage and be the big guns. I would've lost so many missions without him!"
  • Implied: There's a huge set of armor, along with a BFS and tower shield, though nobody ever gets to use it, or look even remotely muscular enough to use it.
  • Deconstructed: When Clay's up against someone who can consistently Speed Blitz him into oblivion, he's a sitting duck.
  • Reconstructed: Clay simply just gets better armor, which is so disgustingly thick of metal that it's outright impossible to penetrate. The person who could Speed Blitz him doesn't even do much damage anymore, and they become exhausted very quickly, allowing Clay to deal the final blow.
  • Played for Laughs: Clay's armor is pink and girly, which barely subtracts from his badassery.
  • Played for Drama: Just about nobody respects Clay, never paying him any attention even when he tanks the deadliest blows possible just for the others, simply for looking like a bland nobody even though that's not the case with him at all.
  • Played for Horror: Clay is practically a Stock Slasher.

Look, I know we can't pick up the BFS or the other two handers, but we all know we can just give that to Clay, who's the Heavy Equipment Class.
