The original series

  • For the original series; whenever Dougal makes these surprised or startled eyes.
  • In the "Rustlers" episode, Dougal tries to find some bandits, only to come across this giant lion that seems to pop up rather jarringly. It's then revealed that the lion is only a giant mask that Ermintrude made to play a joke on Dougal.

Dougal and the Blue Cat

  • Dougal suddenly wakes up in the middle of the night. Unsure why, he goes to investigate... and otherwordly wailing noises suddenly ring out. These noises are truly chilling to hear in the dark, halfway between a scream and a siren, suggesting something otherwordly is on the prowl. The fact that they're prelude to the voices of Buxton and the Blue Voice don't make it any better.
Dougal: Look, I'm not easily frightened, but this... Cor!
  • The Nightmare Room. The faces are horrifying enough as they float and spin all over the screen. The original French version has each of the horrifying faces introduce themselves, while yelling at the top of their lungs, while the English dub has them all laughing loudly and evilly as they taunt Buxton. Neither version is any less terrifying.
  • The entire gang (except for Dougal) being captured by Buxton's army borderlines between being this and a Tear Jerker.
  • Madam Blue's Villainous Breakdown in the climax. She starts unleashing a violent thunderstorm around the treacle factory after stripping Buxton from his title as king. Numerous flashes and bolts of lightning were shown as Buxton tries to scamper in fear and when Dougal is freeing his friends from their chains before they escape. By the time the thunderstorm was finishing, all Madam Blue can scream "Blue is Beautiful, blue is best!" in agony before the entire factory collapses to rumble.
    • It's get worse. When Dougal and the gang are escaping, Brian goes back into the collapsing factory after realising that they had forgotten something, leading to his Disney Death when the factory collapses.

The CGI series

  • The episode "Egghead Dylan" has Dylan receiving a bump on his head, causing a 360-degree change in his personality. Seeing him so overly hyperactive, topped with a creepy googly wide-eyed look, can be rather jarring and just feels so wrong.

Other

  • Many people have noted that there's something oddly terrifying about the theme tune. Bill Bailey once suggested there was a "secret hidden Satanic verse" about Zebedee having his legs cut off.
