Tropes for the highlight reel:

  • Cue Card Pause: From "GLITTER":
Anything you want me to do
    I'll do anything for you
(...to end up dead real soon)
Anything you want me to say
I'll say if it gets you to stay
    (...the hell away from me)
  • Deceptively Silly Title: "GLITTER", which sounds unassuming, is actually a Murder Ballad.
  • Death Seeker: Many of the songs on Another Kill for the Highlight Reel are about the protagonist wishing for death. However, he still feels guilty over the death that kickstarts the plot, and everything he never got to say to the deceased beforehand, so he doesn't go through with it. He's also afraid of ending up in Hell if he kills himself. By the end of the album, he remains alive.
Turns out that dying's not so easy when you're living with regret!
  • Glitter Litter: Discussed in "GLITTER", a Murder Ballad, which is about the killer's desire to have the victim's blood "get stuck like glitter" on the former's face.
  • Grief Song: "Watch You Die Again" is about the regret of not being able to say what you wished to someone who's dead, and how much their death haunts the protagonist.
  • Murder Ballad: "GLITTER" sings about an unidentified person whom the singer despises, and he wants to kill them and feel their blood on his face.
    I wanna see your blood
Get stuck like glitter on my face
    I'll wear it every day
  • Remaster: Another Kill for the Highlight Reel has a Deluxe reissue that has higher quality recordings and four bonus tracks: three live recordings and an acoustic cover.
  • Starts with a Suicide: Another Kill for the Highlight Reel opens with "The Funeral You've Been Asking For," in which the singer addresses a woman who had killed herself. Some of the lines imply she did it on purpose ("is it everything you wanted and more?", "did it turn out the way you planned?"). While there's a layer of sarcasm to the song, with him pointing out the pain she caused him, he's also partially distressed because he didn't think she would go that far.
  • Suicide by Pills: "The Perks of Not Being Able to See Your Reflection" is about a man and his beloved wanting to die together because he can't handle living. When she sees how distressed he is, she gives him some pills and bleach to wash them down with, apparently to overdose and die.
  • Title Track: Merci and Another Kill for the Highlight Reel.
