Pat playing with Ramshackle Glory in 2011

Your heart is a muscle the size of your fist
Keep on loving, keep on fighting
And hold on, and hold on
Hold on for your life
Ramshackle Glory, "Your Heart Is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist"

Never trust a man who reads tropes

  • Album Title Drop: See Title Track

  • The Alcoholic: Pat himself, discussed on songs such as "More About Alcoholism"

  • Anti-Love Song: “Love Song” is a strange example in that it is directed at all of humanity and its selfishness.

  • The Anti-Nihilist: Pat’s lyrics often highlighted the horrible things going on in the world before optimistically explaining how they can improve.

  • Anti-Police Song: "Urine Speaks Louder Than Words"
    • In general, many of Pat's songs have lyrics showing his disdain for cops.

  • Audience Participation Song: During the last song at Ramshackle Glory’s last show, the audience screamed along the entire time.

  • Bookends: Live the Dream begins with "First Song" and ends with "First Song, Part 2," and both songs feature the same chord progression.

  • Concept Album: Live the Dream is a concept album "about the first year of sobriety, from the perspective of a punk and an anarchist." When he was active as a musician Pat had a personal website up that detailed the meaning of each track within the broader narrative, and though the site has since gone down today those snippets are still on Bandcamp.

  • Either/Or Title: Appears frequently throughout Pat’s discography, most notably on Live the Dream, where three tracks in a row have one.

  • Epic Rocking: "From Here Till Utopia" is almost 7 minutes long.

  • Protest Song: More of Pat's songs are political in nature than aren't.

  • Recycled Lyrics: "From Here Till Utopia" reuses all of the lyrics from "Do You Wanna Go to Party Town?"

  • Self-Deprecation: Lots and lots.
    • Many of Pat's songs are based around his self-loathing and disappointment with himself. One of the most blatant examples is the song "I'm Not a Good Person."
    • Ramshackle Glory often described themselves as "a punk band with all the wrong instruments."

  • Soprano and Gravel: Pat's raspy vocal delivery on Ramshackle Glory songs is contrasted with backing vocalist Nick Berger's soft, delicate voice.

  • Studio Chatter: "First Song, Part 2" ends with Pat and another band member talking about the take they just recorded.

  • Three Chords and the Truth: Johnny Hobo & the Freight Trains was mainly low-quality recordings of Pat on guitar with programmed drums.

  • Title Track:
    • Wingnut Dishwashers Union: “Never Trust a Man (Who Plays Guitar)"
    • Ramshackle Glory: “Who Are Your Friends Gonna Be?”
