Covet is a Math Rock/Progressive Rock instrumental trio from San Francisco, California. It was started by their guitarist, Yvette Young, who previously released an acoustic math rock album showcasing a lot of what would be Covet's trademarks; calm, soothing riffs and time signature changes that coincide with fantastic instrumentation, and got her start in music posting videos of herself playing guitar on Youtube. The band eventually came together to create Currents, which would give them acclaim for the moody, soft melodies and precision guitar work, and get them on tour with bands like CHON and Polyphia.

They're also a bunch of goofballs that spend plenty of time making fun of themselves while they're on the road and in their music videos.

Covet provides examples of the following Tropes:

  • Defector from Decadence: Not necessarily from decadence per se, but Yvette quit her classical training due to the environment around it.
  • I Am the Band: Yvette is the creative heart of Covet.
  • Insistent Terminology: They've occasionally called their music videos "Full band playthroughs" in reference to the band's history as a bunch of Youtube musicians.
  • The Pollyanna: While all three of the members are fun-loving, Forrest takes the cake by seemingly being stoked just to be playing drums at all, sporting an enormous smile whenever he's playing.
  • Prefers Going Barefoot: David tended to not wear shoes on-stage and has been photographed without them in press pictures.
  • Re-release the Song: the song "Sea Dragon" first appeared on Current, and has seemingly been on every release since in some capacity. The Band joked about it being on whatever their upcoming work happens to be.
    • Ares was re-recorded on Technicolor
  • Signature Instrument: Yvette has her bright green and bright pink Ibanez's, and Forrest has a good number of his cymbals positioned as high as they can go and angled toward him.
  • Shaped Like Itself: In their about pages, they're pretty blunt.
  • Stylistic Suck: The dragon costume in "Sea Dragon" looks...cheap, to put it nicely.
    • Yvette's "Super serious guitar playthrough" video for "Falkor", which includes her adjusting an "amp" made out of cardboard and messing around in the snow with 80's video filters all over it.
    • Forrest's "Most Swag Playthru" for Falkor has him start fairly seriously...then the lights come up and he's wearing a pair of goofy sunglasses to compliment his ear-to-ear smile.
    • The video for "Nero" has the band messing around in a junkyard "fighting" each other with cheap laser effects.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Technicolor has a few songs where Yvette sings.
  • Take That!: Due to GIFT and the fact that the lead guitarist is a woman, Covet has had to deal with people with takes on whether or not she can actually play. Her first was her just playing Shibuya on a crappy amp in her room, and their second was a joke t-shirt with the following text that Yvette Modeled...with four pairs of sunglasses on:
People only like Covet because their guitarist is a girl (also she cheats because she uses open tunings)
  • Write What You Know: The song Firebird was written in tribute to her mother, who immigrated to the US and worked hard enough to own a white Pontiac Firebird; something she was immensely proud of.
