Between Wei Wuxian and...

    Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji
While deep down the protagonists are more similar than they initially appear to be, there's still a lot of things that sets them apart.
  • Both are highly intelligent but contrast in how they behaved in class; Wei Wuxian was the unorthodox and trouble-making rule-breaker, whereas Lan Wangji was the perfect honor student.
  • Both are good and selfless people but leave opposite impressions on other people and generally have different reputations. Wei Wuxian can be easily perceived as an evil and sadistic jerk with the slightest misstep, while many highly respect Lan Wangji and believe he can do no wrong.
Wei Wuxian: You see, you're clearly not a virgin anymore, yet when people see your face, they say you are one no matter what. In my previous life, I've never touched a girl's hand except when I'm trying to save someone, but not a single person believed that I was a virgin. Night-hunting while at school! Everyone gossiped about me playing around with girls. Up on the Burial Mounds! Everyone gossiped about me being a satyr of anarchy.
  • Both had a good relationship with their mother and loved their parents deeply. However, Lan Wangji's parents had a checkered past, whereas Wei Wuxian's parents have a clean slate (although they were the subject of a few ugly rumors and insults).

    Wei Wuxian and Jin Guangyao
As the hero and villain, it is of no surprise they have the biggest contrasts between the two of them.
  • Both are of lowly origins, as Jin Guangyao's mother was a prostitute and Wei Wuxian's father was a servant of the Jiang Clan. Their respective other parent, on the other hand, is of well renown; Jin Guangyao's father is the Jin Clan leader and Wei Wuxian's mother was a rogue cultivator and a disciple of the legendary Baoshan Sanren. Consequently, both are looked down on due to the status of their lower-ranked parent. Wei Wuxian never pays attention to those insults (even if it slightly irks him). Jin Guangyao, on the other hand, hates being called the Son of a Whore to the point that in the Guanyin temple, Wei Wuxian calls this out as his Berserk Button.
  • Though he's the son of a servant, Wei Wuxian is still treated as a young master before he becomes reviled as the Yiling Patriarch, and he is favoured by Jiang Fengmian despite not being his child. His parentage is mainly used against him after his reputation is already beginning to tank. Jin Guangyao's status as the son of prostitute, in comparison, is far more despised by society and something that hinders him all his life. During his time in the Nie Clan, there are even people who refuse to drink the tea that he pours for fear that it's in some way tainted by him. In the Jin Clan, he's the least favoured of Jin Guangshan's children because of this, even below the equally illegitimate Mo Xuanyu.
  • While Wei Wuxian is saved from his life on the streets by Jiang Fengmian when he was young, Jin Guangyao is rejected by his father when he seeks him out as a teenager after his mother's death, having never planned to take him into the Jin Clan like his mother believed. Wei Wuxian is able to become a skilled and powerful cultivator after becoming a Jiang disciple, while Jin Guangyao's cultivation will always be weak due to his late start. Jin Guangyao is only accepted into his father's clan after he kills Wen Ruohan and becomes a war hero.
  • At the beginning of the story, Wei Wuxian is established as a Hero with Bad Publicity and Hated by All, whereas Jin Guangyao is a Villain with Good Publicity and more or less Loved by All. By the end, their positions are flipped after Wei Wuxian clears his name and all of Jin Guangyao's crimes are exposed, with the former no longer treated with total disdain (although still feared) and the latter becoming a target of Gossipy Hens.
  • Both have made many mistakes in their lives; but while Wei Wuxian committed majority of his mistakes unintentionally and because he was backed into a corner until he lost control of himself, Jin Guangyao committed all of his crimes with a clear mind and a nearly undisturbed conscience. When confronted about it, Wei Wuxian doesn't deny his wrongs and is quick to admit to the truth and dismiss any lies, while Jin Guangyao attempts to either justify himself or deflect the blame on others, and will even try to guilt-trip or evoke sympathy from his accusers.
  • Jin Guangyao has an Eidetic Memory while Wei Wuxian is (in)famously a Forgetful Jones. This leads to Jin Guangyao to hold an endless list of grudges while Wei Wuxian lives by the words of his mother to "remember only the kindness of others" to let him move on from even the events that led to his death.
  • Wei Wuxian is dangerously selfless; every one of his actions in the past were solely for the sake of others — up to sacrificing his golden core for Jiang Cheng's sake — and it takes his death, rebirth, and encouragement from Lan Wangji for him to start choosing things for himself alone. In comparison, Jin Guangyao is more selfish; his actions tend to be for his own ambitions or survival, and he values himself over others. The lives of others are of little consequence to him in pursuit of his personal goals and ambitions, and he has shown himself to be willing to even threaten his own nephew for the sake of survival.
  • Both lived in or near Yunmeng once, and the conclusion of their character arcs have them return to where they previously lived for one last time. For Wei Wuxian, it's both the Burial Mound and Lotus Pier, and for Jin Guangyao it's Yunping City.

    Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng
  • Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng would qualify for the Sibling Yin-Yang trope if they were related by blood. To summarize, their dispositions, beliefs, and virtues are perfect parallels. However, this is what results in them clashing and drifting apart. While they cared for each other as teens and young adults, their characters were simply too different for them to remain side-by-side, especially after they assumed positions of power or renown. While Wei Wuxian has already realized this and had long since accepted it, Jiang Cheng remains in denial. In the finale, Wei Wuxian helps his old friend come to an understanding about their differences, allowing them to stop dwelling on the past and by extension, each other.

    Wei Wuxian and Lan Sizhui
  • Wei Wuxian was mischievous and prone to annoying certain teachers or superiors with his shenanigans during his time as the Jiang Clan's head disciple, while Lan Sizhui (who isn't confirmed to be the Lan Clan's head disciple but appears to be the leader of his group) is obedient and always polite. Nevertheless, both are looked up to as disciples because of their intellect, strength, and leadership skills. Just like how Lan Sizhui can be relied on to reason with others and watch over a group, Wei Wuxian is capable of leading people and taking control of a situation whenever he needs to. The latter is impressed by the Lan Clan disciples' good manners and reliability multiple times in the story and notes that he must had been raised well, while the teenager similarly respects the older man (before and after his true identity is revealed) for his kind nature and mentorship.
  • Their childhoods began similarly but later diverged.
    • Both were Cheerful Children that lost their families to tragic circumstances when they were still young, and were eventually adopted by someone who was close to the families they lost. They barely have any memories of their families due to either sickness or trauma, but were nevertheless treated well by their guardians.
    • Their experiences in the clan they were brought into are radically different. Whether before or after he regained his memories, Lan Sizhui never felt like an outsider as he was treated by everyone in the Lan Clan as if he was one of them, and his guardian raised him with the utmost love and care. Even after learning of his origins, he never doubted his place in the Lan Clan. Although Wei Wuxian got along with part of the Jiang family, he never felt completely safe around them or that he truly belonged with them because he's aware of his presence causing further friction within said family, with the mother (and eventually the son) hating his guts. By the present time, he has distanced himself from his clan, accepting it as part of his past but no longer of his future.

    Wei Wuxian and Xiao Xingchen
Although he never got to meet his mother's fellow disciple, Wei Wuxian investigates Xiao Xingchen's death when watching A-Qing's memories of his backstory and sees himself in the man a little.
  • Both were kind, had a strong sense of justice and wished to do good things for everyone. As someone with a rebellious spirit who practised The Dark Arts, however, Wei Wuxian rubbed off on people the wrong way and became a Hero with Bad Publicity. Xiao Xingchen was fortunately well-respected as a cultivator, since his personality was more inoffensive to others. Appropriately, Wei Wuxian's character designs have predominantly black outfits, while Xiao Xingchen's have predominantly white robes.
  • Both were very selfless, to the point of giving up a part of themselves to save their close friend. However, their selflessness also left them handicapped, vulnerable, and susceptible to manipulation by their enemies in different ways. When Xue Yang mocked Xiao Xingchen for hurting others with his heroic acts in the Empathy flashback, Wei Wuxian can't help but flinch since he too was in such a position:
    • Xiao Xingchen was tricked into killing people thinking they were corpses, including his own friend, due to his blindness and naiive trust in Xue Yang.
    • Wei Wuxian's falling mental health from the pressures of protecting the Wen survivors while being the cultivation world's enemy at the same time negatively influenced his ability to control his demonic cultivation, which lead to the deaths of both his martial sister and her husband.
  • Both died shortly afterward being driven to despair, with Xiao Xingchen being so shocked by Xue Yang's deception that he committed suicide and Wei Wuxian so grief-stricken by Jiang Yanli's death that caused the Nightless City massacre and later suffered from backlash. Their deaths almost obliterated their souls completely — it took 13 years until Wei Wuxian returned to the mortal realm, whereas Xiao Xingchen has his fate unknown due to his broken soul fragments, although there is hope he will come back thanks to Song Lan now carrying his soul with him.
  • As Wei Wuxian notes, they both had terrible things happen to them because of both their attempts to do the right thing and an event that didn't even involve them.

    Wei Wuxian and Xue Yang
Once Xue Yang's entire backstory is revealed, it becomes clear that he serves as a Shadow Archetype to Wei Wuxian.
  • Both lived in the streets when they were younger and had traumatic experiences during that time, with Wei Wuxian developing a fear of dogs and Xue Yang losing his pinky finger in a gruesome event. While Wei Wuxian didn't allow the bad parts of his past to embitter him, Xue Yang grew up with a vengeful and twisted streak and exacted his revenge on those who made his life miserable, and then some.
  • Both were Street Urchins when they were younger, but Wei Wuxian eventually got taken in by the Jiang Clan. Xue Yang wasn't so lucky to be adopted by a loving family, or by anyone else for that matter. The two nevertheless became talented disciples of their respective sects (as the Jiang Clan's head disciple and the Jin Clan's guest disciple) that were eventually kicked out (or "kicked out" in Xue Yang's case) due to grievances.
  • Both practice demonic cultivation. However, Wei Wuxian has always used The Dark Arts with noble goals, while Xue Yang uses demonic cultivation with malicious intent.
  • On a lighter note, their taste preferences are on the opposing sides of the spectrum, with Wei Wuxian having a fondness for spicy food and Xue Yang preferring sweets.

    Wei Wuxian and Wen Zhuliu
  • Both were exceedingly loyal to the clans they were taken into as it offered them a home and an opportunity to become an esteemed cultivator. In Wen Zhuliu's case, he was willing to do anything that was requested of him, even if he personally disagreed with it, because he believed that he could not thank Wen Ruohan enough for taking him into his service. In Wei Wuxian's case, while his loyalty was genuine, it often reached self-destructive levels and it was not enough to make him stand by and let injustice happen even though taking action can invite political scrutiny, to the point that he was willing to cut ties with the Jiang Clan if needed be. Wei Wuxian even expressed disgust at Wen Zhuliu's brand of allegiance at one point.
Wei Wuxian: Why is it that the debt you owe has to be repaid at the expense of others?

Between Lan Wangji and...

    Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng
Both are two of the most important people in Wei Wuxian's life, which is what makes their differences more significant.
  • Both of their personalities lean towards the icy and aloof end, but demonstrate it in different ways and to different degrees. Lan Wangji is stoic and genteel, while Jiang Cheng is irritable and confrontational even though he hides it under a veneer of cold formality.
  • Jiang Cheng saw Wei Wuxian as a close brother figure as teens, yet part of him has always resented Wei Wuxian for surpassing him in everything — which brought tension into their relationship. Lan Wangji is second to his brother in many aspects, although he never harbors any envy and the two remain close.
  • Jiang Cheng condoned Wei Wuxian's use of The Dark Arts as it helped them against the Wens, which bridged their relationship for a time although they ended up drifting apart when Wei Wuxian's powers soon became more of a political burden than an asset. Lan Wangji, by contrast, worried that necromancy will affect Wei Wuxian both physically and mentally, which initially strained their relationship but it eventually ended with them becoming closer by the present time since Lan Wangji has always showed selfless and unconditional concern for Wei Wuxian.
  • They stand on opposite sides of the spectrum regarding the To Be Lawful or Good trope. Both have morals and don't approve of tyranny and needless cruelty, but Jiang Cheng hesitates to perform heroics and go against the law as he doesn't wish to bring down the wrath of the other clans upon his home; while Lan Wangji is not afraid to go even against his clan if meant doing what's right, but even then he will accept punishment for his actions so as to not dishonor and endanger his family.
  • Both were distant from their fathers, but they were raised differently by their mothers. Despite the limited time he was given whenever he would go see his mother, Lan Wangji was always treated gently and affectionately by Madam Lan; while Jiang Cheng was treated harshly by Yu Ziyuan at almost every opportunity, all the more so when Wei Wuxian was involved.
  • Both are respected and famous authority figures in the cultivation world but have different attitudes towards politics. Lan Wangji stays away from politics as much as possible, has no concerns about his reputation, and is ready to oppose any unreasonable figures of authority as well as take responsibility for his actions. On the other hand, Jiang Cheng completely immerses himself in politics due to being the leader of the Jiang Clan and having to rebuild it from almost nothing. As such, he stays a Slave to PR to avoid forming any friction and prefers to side with the many who are wrong than the few who are right.
  • Jiang Cheng — despite his efforts — is not a kind person, whereas Lan Wangji is a Friend to All Children. However, they both deeply cherish the child that they helped take care of. Even then, the opposing personalities of their charges reflect the difference in how they raised them. Both Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng raised Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling respectively. Both juniors are Someone to Remember Him By — Wei Wuxian (romantically), in Sizhui's case, and Jiang Yanli (platonically), in Jin Ling's case. Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng were thrust into a parental role at a young age, but neither shied away from the task, and it's clear that both of them care for their charges. However, they took care of their charges differently. Lan Wangji gave Lan Sizhui the love and education he needed and made sure that he grew up with good virtues; whereas Jiang Cheng's prejudices and his subpar knowledge of proper parenting caused Jin Ling to — as Wei Wuxian would put it — grow up as the amalgamation of his family's flaws rather than strengths. This is made clear in Wei Wuxian's differing first impressions on the two juniors, who also foil each other.
  • Both are known by impressive and powerful titles, but these titles reflect the differences in how the public sees them. Lan Wangji is Loved by All and is titled "Hanguang-Jun" due to his reputation as a Hope Bringer that helps anyone in need without seeking any reward, and the common folk see Lan Wangji as a kind and heroic cultivator who could be relied on when anything bad happens. Jiang Cheng is called "Sandu Shengshou", as the "Sandu" in his title stands for the three poisons of humanity: anger, greed, and ignorance/ill will; and Jiang Cheng embodies all three of said poisons. Unlike with Lan Wangji, the people fear Jiang Cheng, avoid him as much as possible and make sure to never provoke him under any circumstances.
  • Over the course of the story, majority of the Lan Clan feared that Lan Wangji is slowly becoming more defiant and more of an outlier rather than the ideal Lan disciple that he has been long praised to be, when in reality he is the one who began to embody the true meaning of the Lan Clan's motto of "righteousness" the most. On the other hand, Jiang Cheng griped about being told by his father that he didsn't understand the full meaning of the Jiang Clan's motto of "attempting the impossible" or, more accurately, "doing the right thing even against all odds", and the evolution of Jiang Cheng's deep-seated bitterness before and after the Time Skip shows that he really has failed to understand the motto, let alone practice the ideals that the Jiang Clan lives by.
  • They contrast each other in the development of their relationship with Wei Wuxian; throughout the story, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji start off on the wrong foot but grow closer, while Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian are close martial brothers but eventually fell out and are on bad terms when the latter is resurrected. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji make it clear that they want to be with each other without feeling indebted in any way, which is what strengthens their relationship. On the other hand, the concept of guilt and debts — whether it's the owing or paying thereof — has plagued Wei Wuxian's relationship with Jiang Cheng for so long that it causes them to part ways for good.

Between the Jiang and Jin Clans

    Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng
  • Wei Wuxian was involved in their families deaths to some degree. This led to a lot of resentment and anger from Jiang Cheng that plagues him today, and this clearly influenced Jin Ling's own hatred for him despite only knowing him from stories and rumours. The circumstances of their parents' deaths and how they deal with their feelings towards Wei Wuxian during the story differs, however.
    • With Jin Ling's parents, Wei Wuxian inadvertently caused Jin Zixuan's death and Jiang Yanli died because she took a fatal blow meant for Wei Wuxian; but it was obvious that had it not been for Jin Guangshan's corrupt goals and Jin Guangyao's interference, no harm would have befallen Jin Ling's parents. Despite his ill feelings towards him and wanting revenge for most of his life, Jin Ling is able to properly make peace with what happened, move on from his hatred, and forgive Wei Wuxian as well as reconcile with him.
    • In Jiang Cheng's parents' case, Wei Wuxian going against Wen Chao and Wang Lingjiao was an indirect trigger to the Wens' attack on Lotus Pier— an event that would had happened sooner or later anyway thanks to the Wen Clan's hunger for dominance, but Jiang Cheng nevertheless held onto the belief that Wei Wuxian was still responsible one way or another. While their relationship remained intact after the incident, Jiang Yanli's death did away with any remaining good feelings Jiang Cheng had for his former martial brother. It takes an Awful Truth to humble him into finding closure with his misconceptions and grudges in order to move on, but he had committed too many wrongs out of his resentment that whether he and Wei Wuxian have a chance of repairing their friendship is highly uncertain.

Between the Jin and Lan Clans

    Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling
  • Their Establishing Character Moment and their first on-screen interaction shows that their personalities easily contrast. Lan Sizhui is calm, disciplined, and mature, while Jin Ling is quick-tempered, brash and bratty. When the friendly Lan Sizhui politely reminds him of the night-hunting protocols and that setting up hundreds of nets puts him at an unfair advantage, the irritated Jin Ling snarks at him in response and refuses to back down. However, both never shirk from their duties as cultivators.
  • They both lost their families a few years after the Sunshot Campaign, either to Wei Wuxian (for Jin Ling) or the Four Great Clans (for Lan Sizhui), and were eventually adopted by someone else. However, whereas their guardians/Parental Substitutes don't get along, Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling eventually become friendlier with each other after a few clashes.
  • Because of how they were raised, they grew up with different outlooks towards demonic cultivators. Because of his parents' deaths and his maternal uncle's issues, Jin Ling spent his whole life harboring hatred towards Wei Wuxian, Wen Ning, and everyone who takes up demonic cultivation. On the other hand, Lan Sizhui doesn't have any bias towards any kind of person or cultivator. This is defined through the initial state of their respective relationship with Wei Wuxian (who was still disguising as Mo Xuanyu) and their argument after Yi City, where Jin Ling is furious at Lan Sizhui for suggesting Wei Wuxian wasn't evil while the latter argues that they shouldn't judge anyone without understanding the full picture.

Between the Nie and Lan Clans

    Lan Xichen and Nie Huaisang
  • Both are gentle, friendly and refined clan leaders that prefer peace when possible. To the rest of the cultivation world, however, Lan Xichen comes off as an extremely wise and learned man with the best judgement whereas Nie Huaisang is the no-gooder who knows nothing as he always exclaims and can't do anything right on his own. How society sees them, though, contrasts the kind of people they really are.
    • Lan Xichen may seem like a Reasonable Authority Figure who can provide a good solution to a complication as soon as it's presented. In truth, however, he's passive, lacks a firm sense of decisiveness and has a near-extreme inclination to neutrality even in situations where it's blatantly obvious that lending his opinion or putting his foot down would end the conflict much sooner, because he often fails to realize that establishing peace sometimes means raising one's voice over just causes even if it invites scrutiny. While he is intelligent, it doesn't mean he lacks naivety, and said naivety causes him to be blind to the damning problems around him and commit severe mistakes born out of misguided judgment.
    • On the outside, Nie Huaisang seems like a weak-willed ignoramus who is an Authority in Name Only who constantly whines to others that he's not involved in any matter whenever he's confronted and is wet behind the ears about plenty of things. However, he doesn't explicitly take sides because he knows his role as a Wild Card that actually knows far more than he lets on when it comes to what the cultivation world both hides and shows, and he lets other people think that he's a fool so he can continue acting as he pleases without worrying about being suspected. He also doesn't get involved in the affairs of others purely because he chooses his battles and is able to assess whether he should act in a situation or simply watch from the sidelines.

    Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen
  • Both are the older son of a family, became responsible for leading a powerful clan at a young age, and are also highly respected for their skills. Thy were different kinds of leaders, however:
    • While Lan Xichen employs centrist methods in handling a situation, Nie Mingjue was not a man of compromises and would tend to take a more immediate and extreme approach. In general, Lan Xichen acts as a neutral party who would rather not take sides, and Nie Mingjue wasn't afraid to act on his opinions nor disagree with the other party.
    • Their temperaments are a good contrast — Lan Xichen is patient and calm, whereas Nie Mingjue was fierce and blunt.
  • Both are close to their younger brother, and dote on them in some ways. In spite of any disagreements they may have, both remain tightly-knit throughout and deeply care for each other. The only difference is that Lan Xichen is gentle with his brother and always gets along with him, Nie Mingjue often scolded Nie Huaisang due to his strict nature and had a falling out at some point — not that it stopped the latter to immediately seek revenge on his his older brother's behalf after his death.
  • In terms of their treatment of Jin Guangyao, both started from the same point but eventually diverged.
    • Nie Mingjue had a high opinion of Jin Guangyao at first and didn't care about his background, but his respect slowly eroded after seeing how dishonest and immoral Jin Guangyao could be, which the latter didn't change even after being confronted about it. Ever since then, while he did try to be lenient with Jin Guangyao on some time, he started focusing more on only on the bad aspects about Jin Guangyao without taking a moment to properly reason with him or even make compromises with him.
    • Lan Xichen feels deep gratitude and appreciation towards Jin Guangyao for sheltering him and providing him with aid, and the gratitude is reciprocated by the latter for not being treated any differently by him in spite of his status. Consequently, Lan Xichen sees only the good in Jin Guangyao and has an extremely difficult time believing that his friend would willingly commit any misdeeds if they weren't done under extreme duress.

Between the Jiang and Wen Clans

    Wen Ning and Jiang Cheng
  • Both are the younger-born sons of their family and had an older sister who doted on them and treated them well. While Jiang Cheng was shown gentle sisterly love, Wen Ning was often scolded (albeit in good faith) by his sister.
  • Both suffer a lack of confidence in themselves, but it's for different reasons and they show it in opposite ways. Wen Ning wants to prove himself to be good at something but has always been shy and kept, which attracted the ridicule of his fellow clansmen; while Jiang Cheng is driven and outspoken, but the complete lack of proper paternal guidance and affection he got caused him to always doubt himself and force himself to go harder.
  • When it comes to protecting the people important to them, Jiang Cheng always falters in this task when he's facing against people of equal or higher authority. On the other hand, Wen Ning isn't afraid to stand up to anybody even if they rank higher than him, and he doesn't care if he's defying them on their home ground.
  • They lost their sisters in an incident involving Wei Wuxian; but while Wen Ning never doubted Wei Wuxian and stayed loyal to his friend both in life and in unlife, Jiang Yanli's death was the final nail in the coffin that caused Jiang Cheng to lose any good will he may have had left for Wei Wuxian and now wants him dead and/or in eternal suffering.
  • Both their clans had something to do with the near-eradication of the other's, but only one feels a burning grudge while the other doesn't. And even Wen Ning's entire speech to Jiang Cheng in Lotus Pier, even if it also serves as a chance for him to vent out all his frustrations at what Jiang Cheng did to his family, is mainly done not out of vengeance, but out of concern for Wei Wuxian's well-being.
  • Their relationships with Wei Wuxian differ on what level of ground the two stand on in said relationships.
    • Between Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian, Wen Ning is deeply loyal to Wei Wuxian for showing him kindness and saving his family. Wei Wuxian appreciates Wen Ning's company and support, but he doesn't like it when Wen Ning treats him like a master and prefers that they speak on equal footing. He also encourages Wen Ning to find his own path and is nothing but glad for him when he does just that. At worst, he feels a bit sad to see his friend go, but he's happier that Wen Ning is making his own decisions, and the extras hint that the two still keep in touch every now and then.
    • While Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian sincerely cared for each other in the latter's first life, it's obvious that their relationship wasn't equal, with the main reason being their difference in rank, which was used to threaten their relationship after the Sunshot Campaign due to Jiang Cheng's inferiority and abandonment issues and his resentment towards Wei Wuxian for being Always Someone Better. It's only after Jiang Cheng is forced to confront the fact that his failure to trust Wei Wuxian and his bitterness about being Always Second Best contributed to the deterioration of their friendship that he lets Wei Wuxian go, and there's no assurance if they will ever rekindle their friendship again.

Between All Cultivators

    Yu Ziyuan and Wang Lingjiao
  • While both women loathed each other during their confrontation at Lotus Pier, they had more in common than they would like to admit. Both were aware of the hierarchy of power in their world, they thought that those of the lower stratum should know their place, they openly showed their condescension and disdain for anyone they disliked and saw as beneath them. The only difference is that Yu Ziyuan was of a high rank and did have a scruple or two, which cannot be said for Wang Lingjiao. This culminated in the former beating up the younger woman, showing that while she was okay with pacifying the Wen Clan by punishing Wei Wuxian she was not willing to bend down to the latter's snobby ways.
