Sonic the Hedgehog and Nine the Fox have just entered into the chamber where the dictatorial Chaos Council keeps the crystal that they’ve been using as an inexhaustible power supply.
After recognizing it as a smaller piece of the Paradox Prism, Sonic comes to the dreadful realization that he is responsible for transforming his idyllic home of Green Hill into the bleak urbanized dystopia known as New Yoke City, and for causing all his friends to turn into colder, harsher versions of themselves.
Baffled by all that Sonic is saying, Nine simply tells Sonic to “grab that shard, and we’ll sort out the rest later!”
In the official Sonic Prime cartoon, Sonic does just that… and in doing so, gets warped away to a whole-new Shatterverse!
But what if things had been different? What if Sonic had felt so guilt-ridden and horrified by everything he accidentally caused to happen, that he simply could not bring himself to touch the Paradox Prism shard at all? What if, instead, Sonic had remained in New Yoke City with Nine the Fox and Rebel Rouge and Renegade Knucks, and devoted himself to liberating the city from the Chaos Council’s tyranny?

The Liberators provides examples of:
- Abhorrent Admirer: Chaos Sonic tries repeatedly to come onto Rusty Rose, but she's "not interested."
- Artifact of Doom: Sonic treats the red Paradox Prism shard as though the slightest mishandling of it might initiate the apocalypse. And considering what the Paradox Prism itself did to Green Hill and all of Sonic’s original friends, one could hardly blame him for this attitude!
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Nine clearly sees Sonic as the Cloudcuckoolander, and himself as his minder.If his hedgehog friend had been a regular New Yoker, Nine might’ve told him, “You go ahead and have lots of fun doing that, buddy… I’ll stay here in my room and work on my tech. I don’t socialize.” But since this was Sonic, there was always the chance that he might ‘recognize’ some stranger as another ‘Green Hill friend.’ Therefore, Nine pretty much HAD to come along, just in case Sonic made an embarrassing scene, and he needed to intervene.
- Innocent Innuendo: At one point, Sonic offers to “have hours of fun” with Rebel and Knucks, and it’s clear from their reactions that they assume he meant an R-rated version of fun!
- Edible Theme Naming: The streets of New Yoke City all have egg-themed names like Hardboiled Road, Benedict Avenue and Soufflé Street.
- Expy: The bleak, barren, uninhabited Zilch Island is a very obvious stand-in for The Grim from the Sonic Prime cartoon, especially considering how Nine wanted to move down there with Sonic.
- Extremely Protective Child: Although Nine is younger than Sonic, he is immensely protective of his blue hedgehog friend.
- Foul Fox: Chaos Nine, since he's as a robotic version of Nine made by the Chaos Council!
- The Heart: Sonic treats all the New Yoke variants of his old Green Hill buddies like gold and goes out of his way to do things for them. Within a few short months, all of them become good friends with each other.
- La Résistance: In this story, Sonic, Nine, and Rusty join Renegade Knucks and Rebel Rouge’s Resistance.
- Magnetic Hero: Sonic’s heroism inspires so many New Yokers to join the Resistance, they end up needing to build several additional rebel bases.
- Malicious Misnaming: Chaos Nine insists on calling Nine "Seven," because he thinks that Nine's two organic tails are completely worthless.
- Not in This for Your Revolution: The only reason Nine begrudgingly joins the Resistance is because Sonic insisted on helping Rebel and Knucks with their rebellion.
- Only Friend: Nine initially sees Sonic as his only friend in the world, treating everyone else coldly.
- Point of Divergence: The first chapter of this fanfic reads like a novelization of the last scene of the cartoon’s third episode… right up until the point where Sonic develops a huge phobia of the Paradox Prism shard, and refuses to touch it when Nine tells him to.
- Robosexual: At one point, everyone thinks that Sonic and Rusty Rose are boyfriend and girlfriend.
- Robot Me: Not just Chaos Sonic... Nine gets his own robot replica named Chaos Nine!
- Rude Hero, Nice Sidekick: Inverted. Sonic is pleasant and sociable to practically everybody, while Nine is unfriendly and snarky to everyone except Sonic.
- Seldom-Seen Species: Most of them are purely incidental characters, but this fanfic features such uncommon species as minks, capybaras, marmots, and potoroos.
- Sue Donym: At one point, Nine and Rebel Rouge infiltrate a power plant, disguised as "Juan Plussate"note and "Cassandra Gordon."
- Super-Speed: Guess who?
- Undying Loyalty: Nine and Sonic to each other.
- [Verb] This!: Sonic pulls this on Dr. Deep, just before punching him in a fight.Dr. Deep: Namaste, needlemouse!
