Fanfic / Bonds Beyond the Boundary

Go To

Bonds Beyond The Boundary is a crossover fanfic between BlazBlue and Fairy Tail written by ArmoredCoreNineBall.

In the long list of shitty things to happen to him, Ragna finds himself stuck in the Kingdom of Fiore. After a brief run in with Natsu and Happy, he's given an offer to join the Fairy Tail guild. With nothing better to do and his curiosity having been piqued, Ragna decides to take him up on his offer.

Despite the similarities in title, it has nothing to do with the light novel series, Beyond the Boundary.

Word of God confirms that it is a Dead Fic.

Bonds Beyond The Boundary provides examples of:

  • A-Cup Angst: Discussed. Ragna mentally notes that with almost every girl in the Fairy Tail guild having breasts the size of car tires, Noel would blow a massive fuse if she were there.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: In the games, Ragna wasn't shown having much of any technical prowess, and gag reels outright portrayed him as being Hopeless with Tech. Here, he's shown to be technically sufficient enough to repair cars and even minor damage to his mechanical left hand.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Ragna's attacks on NOL facilities in his series are heavily subject to Depending on the Writer, with him either slaughtering anyone there or just those who got in his way, but either characterization didn't really have him care too much about the lives he took during his attacks. Here, it's shown that he ultimately dislikes killing and would rather avoid doing so, but has come to accept it as an inevitability with who he is.
  • Almighty Janitor: Ragna's Azure Grimoire abilities are extremely powerful even with the Idea Engine damaged and many consider his strength and skill to be on par with S-Class mages like Laxus and Mystogan, which gets taken up a notch when he activates it, letting him annihilate Jose Porla, one of the Ten Wizard Saints. Despite this, he's the new guy at Fairy Tail.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Ragna starts to develop romantic feelings for Erza since she's treated him with complete kindness since he first arrived, which greatly contrasts his usual treatment back in his world. He even admits that he's a bit of a sucker for being treated nicely.
  • Cain and Abel: Jin and Ragna respectively. Jin really wants to kill his brother, and Ragna finds his attempts to be infuriating.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Jin was enraged at the sight of Erza kissing Ragna...because nothing should take his brother's attention away from his attempts to kill him.
  • Creepy Good: Some members of Fairy Tail consider Ragna this, seeing as his powers revolve around dark attacks and summoning feral beast heads that devour the souls of his victims. They still consider him a good friend nonetheless.
  • Crossover: Between BlazBlue and Fairy Tail since Ragna and later other characters from his world are sent to Fiore for various reasons.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Erza and Ragna combined make short work of the Eisenwald troops.
    • Lucy's attempts to fight Phantom really don't work in her favor, as she's completely overpowered and captured.
    • Hazama doesn't even try in his fight with Natsu. The only reason Natsu and Lucy were able to get away at all is because Hazama let them to make things more interesting.
    • After he activates the Grimoire, Ragna effortlessly annihilates Jose.
    • Jin spends most of his fight against Natsu, Gray, and Bang completely wiping them out (though to be fair in Bang's case, he was still heavily drained from the previous battles with Phantom Lord). It's not until Erza and later Ragna show up that things even out.
  • Dead Fic: Word of God confirms it as such, due to having fallen out of love with Fairy Tail and getting tired of writing for it.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Surprisingly averted with Ragna in this story. While he hardly gained any respect from his peers back in BlazBlue canon, he gains a lot of admiration from the members of Fairy Tail in this story. Even when Tager and other characters from Ragna's world come in, they're more courteous and respectful with him than usual.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: After hearing about all the horrible things that Terumi did (destroying Ragna's life, manipulating countless people to their deaths, creating a genocidal world-killing demon for fun), Lucy can't process how someone that despicable can even exist.
  • I've Come Too Far: The main reason Ragna decided to continue the Galuna Island mission even though they can't do S-Class jobs. They're already knee-deep in shit, may as well keep going.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Natsu and Lucy keep Ragna from learning that they're on an S-Class mission despite not being allowed to. When he finds out, he's less than amused and downright pissed at them. This works to his favor, since Erza uses this as to why he shouldn't be punished for going on the mission to Galuna Island.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Jin wants to kill Erza so that Ragna's attention can be focused solely on their feud.
  • No Ending: As a result of it being a Dead Fic, there isn't any ending to it. The last chapter ends with Erza getting set to fight Unlimited Terumi/Hazama, and that's all she wrote.
  • No Fourth Wall: The Help Me! Professor Kokonoe! Q and A chapters pretty much forgo the fourth wall altogether, with Kokonoe and whoever enters her lab talking directly with the readers and answering their questions about what could happen later.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Erza muses that she and Ragna have quite a bit in common due to their trying circumstances growing up and the mutilation they've suffered from (Erza losing her eye and Ragna losing his arms).
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Ragna and Jin to absurd levels. Jubei explicitly stopped their fight because them going at it was bound to tear the entire city asunder. Ragna's fight with Ikaruga also shakes the entire Heaven's tower.
  • Pet the Dog: After the Chapter 10 Help Me! Professor Kokonoe! segment, Kokonoe decides not to punish or violently kick Lucy and Gray out of her lab since they behaved themselves.
  • Popularity Power: Jubei leans on the fourth wall when describing why he arrived in Fiore.
Jubei: I arrived by what seemed to be popular demand.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Ragna and Erza start dating in Chapter 18.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot:
    • Ragna has one filthy fucking mouth. It even gets lampshaded how vulgar his language is given how many times he says "fuck" and "shit".
    • Terumi/Hazama doesn't really watch his language at all.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Jubei doesn't do much in the battle against Phantom Lord besides taking out random mooks and members of the guild so that Fairy Tail only has to deal with the elite mooks. He brings up that him doing too much would have hindered Fairy Tail's growth if he handled their problems himself.
  • Trapped in Another World: Ragna starts out stuck in Fiore, but Kokonoe manages to link the gap between their worlds, so Ragna can now leave when he feels like it. He refuses, as Terumi is in that world and Ragna will be damned if he lets him roam around and cause havoc.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Jin easily defeats Bang without even trying, but it's noted that Bang still hadn't fully recovered his strength from the previous fight with the Phantom Lord guild.
  • Wrong Context Magic: While Ars Magus is different from Fairy Tail magic, this difference stems from Ars being derived from a device or outside source like the Grimoire or Nox Nyctores. It functions similar enough that it seems identical at first glance.
