    Edward Lockwood

  • Animal Motifs: The stag, which is his part of the family crest.
  • Dead All Along: Was long dead by the time you start the game.
  • Driven to Madness: Under the effects of the Null and The Circle.
  • Dying as Yourself: It is only in his last moments does he realise how insane he was. Pity it was too late.
Edward: I have witnessed my own madness first hand.
  • Mad Scientist: Mad enough to be kicked out of the Royal Institute over an 'unspecified conduct'
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Upon realising the Circle's goals and that he was in a trap, as well as how the Null was threatening to kill him and Abigail.
  • Tentacle Rope: .What his body is found in.
  • Too Clever by Half: Why he was considered a prime candidate to be turned into the Null by The Circle.

    Abigail Lockwood (née Waldegrave)

  • Animal Motifs: The swan, which is her part of the family crest.
  • Badass Bystander: One of the very few people that has escaped the grasp of the Circle and had avoided being consumed by the Null, which she managed to even trap inside the dollhouse.
H: One who can evade the Circle is one that must be found.
  • Cassandra Truth: Tries to warn Edward of the dangers of the Null.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Her classical training in art allowed her to accurately sketch the various contraptions sent to them by the Circle and have it analysed by the Royal Society. Alas, it was not enough to save Edward.
  • Escape from the Crazy Place: How she manages to avoid the dreadful past events.
  • Impoverished Patrician: Abigail inherited Waldegrave Manor and a whole lot of debt.
  • Mad Artist: Inverted. [She was sane enough to not fall into the Null trap Edward fell into.
  • Women Are Wiser: Was quick enough to see through the tricks of The Circle to escape them.

    Collector Hydrus

H: Everyone has secrets. Mine just happens to be hidden in this box...

  • All There in the Manual: According to the Making Of and a few easter eggs, his code name is "Collector Hydrus".
  • Animal Motifs: The snake.
  • Coat Cape: Wears one, as seen in The Stinger.
  • Collector of the Strange: Under the employ of The Circle.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Instead of the completely featureless and neutral protagonist in the first trilogy who doesn't know much about the Null, here we have a character who is knowledgeable about the element, is part of a known fraction, and we (kind of) know what he looks like.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: He's an employed collector who...collects things.
  • Featureless Protagonist: Subverted in the Stinger, in which you can see part of his face and body.
  • Private Detective: Is frequently employed by The Circle to collect Null samples and investigate those affected by it.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: As seen in The Stinger.
  • Villain Protagonist: Part of the Circle all along, and was sent to Waldegrave Manor to collect the souls of Abigail and Edward Lockwood. He is successful in retrieving one sample of the Null, but
  • Walking Spoiler: Knowing his intentions and the identity of his employers are only revealed at the end.
  • Wild Card: The secret recordings from The Circle have them mention that although they consider his methods "vulgar", his skills are very valuable. However, they decide he's likely going to betray them soon and possibly plan to kill him after his current assignment is done. Seeing his own thoughts in the Hints section for the very last area proves them right, as he considers running away with the Null sample he had just found.

     The Circle (MAJOR SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2783.PNG

  • Artifact Collection Agency: They are collecting Null. And not for good reasons.
  • Big Bad: The villains of the game and the main cause of the Lockwoods' misfortunes. They are also likely to be the same 'Circle' organisation from the first trilogy.
  • Black Cloak: All their Members shown in the Stinger wears one, except for H.
  • Human Sacrifice: Collects souls of brilliant people and turns them into Null.
  • Secret Circle of Secrets: Apart from the fact they want nine Null crystals to be placed on a table and they are willing to kill people to achieve their goals, nothing much is known about them...unless they're the same "Circle" which A.S. was a part of in the original trilogy of games, in which case some details start to come to light.
  • Supervillain Lair: A grand palace with massive fountains that looks more like a cult's chambers.
