    open/close all folders

    In General
  • The Fundamentalist: They're obsessed with returning order to the country, mainly by executing all heretics and corrupting influences (like the vikings or Queen Richardis).
  • Plot-Irrelevant Villain: Although a number of them are involved in the plot due to holding high ranks in Paris, they and their plots are of little interest to Eivor, who is seeking an ally on the throne of Francia to ensure the safety of the vikings in England. However, the Bellatores Dei don't even realize this, with Gozlin even asking Eivor why she is hunting them, not realizing how that was just incidental to Eivor's true goal.

    Isidore Mercator

Isidore Mercator

The mysterious leader of Bellatores Dei.

  • The Ghost: Never appears in the game, but it's his orders the Frankish agents are following.

    Euphrasia

Euphrasia

Voiced by:

A Frankish nun claiming to be blessed by the spirit of Saint Taurinus who goes by the moniker "Little Mother".

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Richardis wishes that she didn't have to die as she wasn't always like that.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She gets violent if anyone calls her by her birth name Euphrasia.
  • Eye Scream: In her unique assassination scene, Eivor stabs her in the right eye with a sacrificial knife before stabbing her in the gut with the Hidden Blade.

  • Sinister Minister: She's a nun whose part of Ballatores Dei and attempts to have Richardis ritually sacrificed.

    Engelwin

Engelwin

Voiced by:

"It is always this way, deliverance or death. Another soul for the Day of Judgement. All thy judgments are just. Amen."

A high-ranking clergyman and Bishop of Paris, as well as the one responsible for the death of Sigfred's brother Sinric.

  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: He has dark circles and bags around his eyes, which his database entry notes is caused by amyloidosis. It adds significantly to his sinister appearance.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His first appearance has him arrive at Sigfred's longhouse, declare his intent to kill them all, then order his men to kill Sigfred and Eivor while sparing Toka.
  • It's Personal: He's Sigfred's major target, as he was the one who called for Sinric's death.
  • Shameful Strip: He subjects this to those who undergo "deliverance". After that comes Cold-Blooded Torture, which often results in their deaths. This is how Eivor manages to kill him in his unique assassination animation, should they take the place of another participant.
  • Sinister Minister: In addition to being a fundamentalist who "delivers" people through torture, Engelwin steals from the tithes to the church to fund his operations and plans.
  • Starter Villain: He's merely the first of Eivor's targets in Francia, but his death is what leads them to Charles.
  • You Will Be Spared: Engelwin orders his men to kill everyone except for Toka, so she can spread his "message" to the rest of the Vikings in Francia.

    Ebels

Ebels

Voiced by:

A warrior defending Paris, and twin brother of Gozlin.

  • Blood Knight: He loves fighting and is one of Paris' fiercest defenders.
  • The Executioner: One of his jobs is to execute prisoners while his brother pronounces the sentence. Of course, Ebels has no time for how long it takes his brother to do so and jumps straight to loping off heads before Gozlin can finish addressing the crowd.
  • The Hedonist: He is not pious like his brother and frequently visits brothels.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Does not share his brother Gozlin's true faith and is more interested in the violence and power their station brings.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Tries this against the vikings at the start of the siege. Eivor passes.

    Gozlin

Gozlin

Voiced by:

A Bishop in Paris, and twin brother of Ebels.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Richardis prays for his soul after Eivor kills him and notes that he was only serving God as best he knew how.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: Eivor doesn't bother letting him finish his ranting before killing him.
  • Not Quite Dead: Eivor thought they killed him in battle during the Siege of Paris, only for him to reemerge at Richardis' trial by fire. Eivor puts him down for good there.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Unlike his brother he is a true believer and prays for Ebels soul, which he fears for due to him going to brothels and lacking true faith.
  • Slashed Throat: How Eivor kills him.
  • Worthy Opponent: When Sigfred first points him out to Eivor, he admits that Gozlin is a fearsome warrior for a Frank.
