Standing in the Hall
Until the 1970s, a common punishment used by Japanese school teachers for tardiness or rowdiness in class was to have the student (almost always a boy) stand out in the hall holding two water-filled buckets (every classroom has buckets since the students normally do the cleaning anyway); the public disgrace could be compounded if the student grew tired and had to put the buckets down on the floor.
Rain Means Death
Rain has a symbolism for: depression, sadness, or misery.
So naturally, many people are shown dramatically dying in the rain. It may have something to do with how rain has a very dramatic effect on the field with friends or family dying.
Compare It Always Rains at Funerals, Battle in the Rain
Contrast Rain, Rain, Go Away for people who want to defy the trope and hate rain, Happy Rain when it involves happiness.
