openAmount of information in character pages Videogame
So remember a while back when I talked about Marvel Puzzle Quest being an absolute mess? I'm taking another sweep at tidying it up, and although the character folders often only have 1-3 tropes, I think they've got too much information otherwise. For example, here's the information listed for the X-Man Angel:
Angel (All-New X-Men)
(please note the character description, like every other one on the page, was removed for being plagiarized)
While I can see an argument for keeping the affiliation listing, I don't think the cover used for an in-game image or the list of each character's moves needs to be there (and honestly I'd be fine chopping the affiliation too). However, I recognize that it would be a pretty major change, I don't know if there's any policy covering this, and thus I'd like to get a yes or no from y'all.
Edited by Afterwordopen No Title Videogame
Is there any reason why Nintendo Hard isn't a YMMV trope? Difficulty in games is entirely subjective, as no matter how hard a game is, there's always going to be a non-zero amount of people who get super good at it to the point where getting through it is no issue. I briefly skimmed through some of the subpages a few days ago, and the trope also definitely seems like a major complaining/Natter magnet, to put it lightly.
Edited by CasualChrisopenIs there a way to request a trope rename? Videogame
I feel like the trope "Self-Sacrifice Scheme" is a bit of a mouthful and sounds more underwhelming than it often is.
At the same time, the name "Hangman's Gambit" sounds mysterious and interesting, but is used for a very mundane purpose: literally just a game of Hangman in Danganronpa.
Hangman's Gambit always sounded like a phrase perfectly suitable for those times when a character sacrifices their life, or pretends to do so in the case of faking their death, in order to increase the chances of a desired outcome in a different endeavor. For example, dying to rile up a crowd of people, or faking their death to make a targeted individual/group focus on something else. This is, by my understanding, exactly what a "Self-Sacrifice Scheme" seems to be.
With this in mind, would it be possible to request that we rename "Self-Sacrifice Scheme" to "Hangman's Gambit"?
If not, could it be made as a subtrope specifically referring to situations where the goal is uncertain and the death is meant as a means of manipulation rather than a direct path to that goal?
Edited by illeatyourselfopen'Shown Their Work' for better animations? Videogame
I've been seeing Shown Their Work examples pop up for some modern FPS video games essentially on the basis of just having more realistic animations. For example, characters retain half empty magazines instead of throwing them away, machine guns have ammunition belts that deplete, weapons with translucent magazines show the ammunition being used up, etc.
If a video game has animations of, for example, Soviet weapons using steel casings instead of brass, I could see how that would qualify as Shown Their Work since that's not something the average player or developer might reasonably know. But these animations aren't about knowing or not knowing anything. It's not like animators from 10 or 15 years ago didn't know that yes, ammunition belts aren't infinite, and it's not 'realistic' for characters to replace one infinite ammunition belt with another infinite ammunition belt when they reload. Obviously they knew that, they simply chose not to animate it for one reason or another.
On top of that, it seems to me that allowing these examples would be very "2021-centric." Sure, games in 2021 often have more realistic animations than games in 2005. But games in 2005 surely have much more realistic animations than games in 1990. Would that mean pretty much any technical animation would be an example of Shown Their Work?
Am I okay to cut examples like this?
openEdit war. Videogame
Thatother1dude has been edit-warring in Deltarune: Other Characters.
Timeline:
- Thatother1dude adds example claiming Kris might be the Knight.
- wingedcatgirl removes it for being speculative and adds comment not to speculate on future chapters or the Knight's identity.
- Thatother1dude puts "Kris is the Knight" speculation into a different example.
- I revert it; in retrospect I should have pulled the sentence entirely because it was still pretty speculative.
- Thatother1dude reverts my reversion and replaces wingedcatgirl's comment with his own comment arguing that his example was valid.
openDead of the brain Videogame
To anyone who's familiar with that game, do you consider the content of it to violate the 5ps? Like...the only thing that I feel may be an issue with it is the fact that there is blatant nudity in the game at times (with an implied sex scene in the middle of the game with "Cathy"), and I don't entirely know if that counts as "porn"...but I will defer to the judgement of others on this matter.
I ask this because I had thought about making a page for it, but also, I have been on the fence about it.

I know that Game Mods are akin to Fan Works on this wiki, but the ones that have work pages use the Video Game namespace, so where should the Character Sheets page of a game mod be listed? On Video Games or Fan Works?

openOnce again, a non-existant work wonk Videogame
I initially brought this up in the Complaining thread, but upon further investigation of the culprit's edit history, it was deemed mod attention may be warrented.
Galdodon 99 made some weird edits to YMMV.Paper Mario The Origami King earlier today.
- “Paper Mario: The Origami Nazi”. Explanation King Olly’s plan for getting rid of all the Paper Toads involves him wishing via the 1,000 Crane Technique that all the Paper Toads go away forever since they share the same face and are poisoning his “perfect world” similar to Adolf Hitler.
And
- Pandering to the Base: While many critics and fans alike praise the game for being a Surprisingly Improved Sequel to its predecessors, a few such as the Villain Army and its Supreme Leader, accuse it of pandering to the people who hated Paper Bowser and his Koopa Troop by having King Olly be the main villain throughout the entire game, while Paper Bowser doesn’t steal back the spotlight from him, though it could just be shock over the eradication of the Paper Toads via the 1,000 Crane Technique. Hell, a review of the game even said this while bashing the game for holding back Nintendo's development of Mario And Luigi Paper Jam 2, despite its 8.5 review rating.
I expanded the spoiler in the second part myself, but aside from their carelessness or lack of respect for spoiling, other red flags include the memetic mutation being a triple bullet point, and frankly I've never seen that meme around as a meme at least in the relatively decent portions of the internet, and the pothole to a Darth Wiki work and reference to a game that has at no point even been hinted to being planned in the Pandering to the Base.
They also added a justifying edit to another entry, I'll just remove that myself when I'm not on mobile.
After making that initial post, it was observed that they had made edits pertaining to the Villain Army, an unpublished work on Darth Wiki, and Paper Jam 2, which as of yet has not even been teased by any development staff, on other pages as well. This whole thing feels like another episode of the Tropers Obsessed with Works that Don't Exist show.
open[Resolved] User ignoring removal edit reasons Videogame
I Am Not A Funguy seems to be on a long spree of creating game pages, indexing them, and immediately adding them to both Administrivia.Pages Needing Wiki Magic and Administrivia.Works Needing Tropes. While I'm not questioning (maybe I should) why can't they come up with 10 tropes themselves, they were (Oct 11th 2021) told again, then again by Graf von Tirol, that Administrivia.Pages Needing Wiki Magic is not for Works Needing Tropes only (I can't check if they were warned before Adminsitrivia.Needs Wiki Magic Love got moved), which they've now dismissed completely.
What action should be necessary?
Note, though not immediately related: they were tapped by mods for ZCE in 2015, 2016 and 2018, so their new work pages may need a review.
Edited by AmonimusopenI think we miss something from FourX Videogame
Already post in the discussion page, but since nobody use it... (in fact, it doesn't even show up on my Watchlist for some reason).
I think the description is missing something. By the page's definition, Command & Conquer would count as one. It has Fog of War (X-Plore), you can build new base in another location with MCV (X-Pand), you can upgrade your base with silo and such (X-Ploit), and your mission is mostly to wipe out the enemy (X-Terminate).
Look up the history, C&C was once there but removed in May 29th 2012 with "Command & Conquer: Kane's Wrath is not a 4x game just because you can loosely use each of the 'X' terms and apply them to it. If that were the case every RTS in existence would be 4X and the term would lose all meaning." as edit reason. And while I agree with the removal, it also underline the problem, by our current definition every Strategy Game with Fog of War, ability to build new base, upgrade, and "wipe out the enemy" goal would be 4X.
In my humble opinion, the problem is inclusion of Age of Empires. I remember that the creator labeled it as 4X RTS and we seem to take it as face value. But IMO, it is more of generic RTS with 4X as Framing Device, skin for various upgrade. If we accept that "Age of Empires" isn't real 4X, then the missing key would be clear, the games' structure; 4X's campaign has one persistent setting for each playthrough while other strategy games have campaign made up from string of missions. Then again, I never play any Age of Empires after the first one, so I might be wrong here.
openFind and replace breaking alphabetical order on Overwatch Videogame
When Taxima renamed McCree to Cassidy on the Overwatch page last night, they failed to change alphabetical order in a few previously-alphabetized examples.
(In addition, it being a mass find-and-replace changed some past-tense examples as well, which I'm not sure we should be doing.)
openUnusual Alternative Character Interpretation entry Videogame
From YMMV.Grand Theft Auto San Andreas:
- Actually, it's easy to come to the conclusion that Madd Dogg is a pimp, and isn't a half-decent person at all, due to the fact that he actually said, "those are MY hoes!" in response to seeing women that lived with him, in a mansion with 15 bedrooms according to him, in a video with OG Loc where no sexual moans could be heard. Sure, sex trafficking can train its victims to be silent while they're raped, but if we're supposed to believe that OG Loc is gay given his gesticulation, voice, and somewhat because of his naivete, WHY would he view women as objects? The Lazlow defence may or may not work because Big Smoke was in the same room as OG Loc during his radio interview where it's suggested that OG Loc's a pimp, possibly pointing a gun at OG Loc's head in order to go along with the act of him instead of Smoke being a pimp... We all know how full of crap Smoke is. When Madd Dogg said what was mentioned earlier, CJ doesn't shoot him right there, EVEN though he could tell Jizzy was a pimp for wearing a purple suit and running a nightclub enslaving people into stripping. Why is CJ so inconsistent when it comes to this? Is he a sociopath? Is he just plain stupid?
- Alternatively, it's possible they aren't literally his hoes in the sense that they're his sex slaves. It could just be that he's referring to groupies and fangirls instead. OG Loc took Madd Dogg's career, wealth, and his house, so he presumably stole the adoration that Madd Dogg's fans (including women) previously showed him. Madd Dogg thinks women should be fawning over him instead because he has a better claim to it. There isn't much indication anywhere else in the game that Madd Dogg is involved in sex trafficking.

This entry reads to me like a misinterpretation, especially if you've played through the game like I have.
There's nothing to suggest Madd Dogg has any sexual affairs or is a pimp (let alone being involved in sex trafficking or prostitution), or if OG Loc is gay beyond a mission about killing someone who may or may not have prison rape him (its evident throughout the game that Loc is an disloyal backstabber). In his radio interview, Loc points a gun at Lazlow for "dissing his hoes", which most likely refers to his fans (the interview even semi-jokingly states he's "hated women all his life" if you take him using hoe in a derogative sense). Hell, the third part there even addresses that Dogg likely uses hoes to refer to Loc stealing away his groupies.
Any thoughts?
openCharacter Pages Videogame
Smoke 'Em Out Struggle is separated into two folders, one for tropes about the mod and one specifically for the character introduced in the mod, Garcello. It even has a image in his character folder as if it was on a characters page. When should character pages be made? I assume in this case the folders should be dissolved because there's only one character and he doesn't have enough tropes for page size to be an issue, but whats the normal protocol? Is there any?

Edited by cyboyopenThe Definition of "Fan-Disliked Explanation" Videogame
I always under the impression that this trope was reserved for unsatisfactory explanations provided in SUBSEQUENT installments of series. However, Lusamine's past as revealed in the post-game is listed as an example. While I agree that her backstory makes her fall under "Unintentionally Unsympathetic" I'm confused if it's a true example given it was established in her debut. So is the example on that page a mistake or are we allowed to include explantations provided in the same work the question was asked? If the latter we're missing quite a few Ace Attorney cases as there are several cases (Turnabout Succession, Turnabout Ablaze, Turnabout Academy, Turnabout for Tomorrow, and Turnabout Revolution) where fans consensus seems to be the Red Herring would've been better than the actual solution.
Someone named Frankie 3 keeps re-posting the same ill-fitting tropes on Tifa Lockhart's character page despite me and other tropers already having pointed out why he needs to stop doing it. Like for example, trying to pin the "Token Good Teammate" label to Tifa when the rest of the party aren't even evil people, at worst having some anti-heroic traits that don't even scale into particularly dark levels. And then there's him posting links to some random wiki to try and add proof of claim when it directly violates troping rule that pages are only for what is found within the work itself. What should be done about him?
