I agree with you. The fact that ammunition belts aren't infinite is hardly something that requires research at all—everybody knows it, and it can't be a case of "shown their work" when knowing it required no work.

Agreed that it's misuse. One Bullet Clips and Bottomless Magazines weren't used in video games because the developers were unaware of how ammunition works in the real world, they were used either due to hardware/programming limitations or Rule of Fun, sacrificing realism for better gameplay.

Right. The unlimited magazine thing was one of those Acceptable Breaks from Reality, not a mistake.
