Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- • General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- • Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- • Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:
- • Help identifying a trope. See TropeFinder.

openYMMV Th3Birdman Web Original
I was wondering whom to ask if I wanted to know whether or not the YMMV for Th3Birdman should include his reliance upon political humour. And since I couldn’t figure out where on this site I was supposed to go, I decided to write this down here.
openTrying to prevent an Edit War
On Genshin Impact, coconutkirin deleted an example of Highly Specific Counterplay that was crosswicked by MathsAngelicVersion per TLP policy, with an edit reason that basically boils down to personal bias. Said example was this (courtesy link here):
- Highly Specific Counterplay: Version 1.3 introduces the adult Geovishap enemies and the Primo Geovishap, whose gimmick revolves around area-of-effect attacks that need to be countered with Geo reaction shields. They're the only enemies where Geo characters have the most utility, because everywhere else, Geo characters are mostly seen as low-tier due to their Stone Wall status limiting their raw DPS potential.
I'm trying to prevent an Edit War here because I want to re-add the example for two reasons. 1): it has merit for the specific types of characters and their uses in gameplay, and 2): per TLP policy, I would like to keep MathsAngelicVersion's original crosswick. Edited by DivineFlame100
open Someone created a feedback space in their sandbox page.
K-Fuzzy-A has a sandbox page that has a space (A folder in this case) where other tropers can edit the page. Here, the intention is so that other tropers can provide feedback regarding some of the sandbox contents (Here, it's characters and story material that's intended for the forum RP Tropers: The Series). Is this actually okay?
open The Spook Vs Flat Character?
I asked about on this on Trope Talk but am also putting it here.
To avoid trope misuse, does this make sense on Canonical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions:
Flat Character vs The Spook:
- A Flat Character has no depth beyond one or two traits and are fairly generic with only the barest amount of characteristics to tell their role in the story.
- The Spook has no background or history and their motives are unknown. This character's mystery provides some motivation for the story.
Am I correct with this, and would this fit on Square Peg, Round Trope:
- The Spook should not be used for every character who has no background; some fit in better being described as a Flat Character instead. A character can be both tropes, but not always.
Would appreciate it if someone could check if definitions are right!
openWandaVision edit war
There appears to have been an Edit War over the entry on YMMV.Wanda Vision Episode 5 On A Very Special Episode over an Unintentionally Sympathetic entry. I don't have context for the show, but I figured it was worth bringing up to those who did.
Lighthammer added it as follows:
- Unintentionally Sympathetic: While Hayward does go overboard with his attack on Wanda, he is absolutely right in the fact that an entire town is being held against their will by -what seems by all accounts to be- her. The trio of Darcy, Monica, and Woo on the other hand, seem to ascribe to Protagonist-Centered Morality.
emeriin removed the entry with the edit reason, "they're not saying she's not being awful just there's something more (like massive trauma) than just 'terrorism'."
Dragon Master 408 re-added it, while also adding more context to the entry. Their edit reason was "Unintentionally Sympathetic is about characters who are unintentionally sympathetic. And as it stands, I think there's a good case for Hayward being this, especially since Darcy herself describes him as a dick before it cuts her off, so it seems like we're supposed to find him in the wrong."
Then The Goddess Is Dead tweaked and moved the entire entry to Informed Wrongness saying, "It's not about sympathy for characters. It's more about the fact that the episode accidentally presents that Both Sides Have a Point when they clearly only intended for Woo, Darcy, and Monica to be right."
Not sure if it needs to be discussed further as Goddess seems to have found a compromise but it felt worth noting.
Edited by mightymewtronopenAlphabetizing Trope Pages
I've noticed that some trope pages have the examples organized in alphabetical order by work, while others don't. Is there a certain length at which that usually happens, or is it a 'whenever someone decides to change it' thing?
open Ever heard the term "butter family"
I recall a long time ago coming across the term here. A Brazilian slang about an unnaturally happy and cheerful family, would only happen in a butter commercial.
openMust be intentional?
Question about Disproportionate Retribution and Evil Is Petty.
Do they have to be intentionally portrayed as such? I've seen the latter used as complaints against characters.
I'm working on the Moral Event Horizon cleanup and this would help with that.
Edited by Ferot_DreadnaughtopenHow to categorize Nick Lutsko's Grandma's House saga? Web Original
This is a series of comedy music videos posted on Twitter and Youtube with a gradually evolving lore that I think could fill out a Characters and WMG page. The first official album release is Songs on the Computer, but the story has continued into the album America's Boy. I am not sure whether it fits better under Web Original, Music, or somewhere else and what to title the page? Creator/Nick Lutsko doesn't seem to fit because he also releases non-comedy music under the same name. Thank you!
Edited by TroperBrinkopen About Curse Relay
Why was it cut? Naturally, all cut pages had a reason for it to be cut, so that fact that Curse Relay didn't have one confused me.
EDIT: NVM, found out why. Please ignore and lock.
Edited by Siegfried1337openAbout Moderation
I was just asking a few questions about moderation, since I am curious about it:
- How does one become a moderator on this site?
- What are the responsibilities and specific powers as a moderator?
- Does the rules cover abuse of moderator powers? For example, a moderator bans several users for no reason other than a petty grudge?
openWhat is the record number of subversions of Cat Scare?
The Slumber Party Massacre has seven false leads of Cat Scare before the real horror shows up, while Scary Movie has three.

So I found Prom Baby which is a....Really short Description. Why is it only a few lines ?
openconvention for paraphrasing quotes
I'm working on the draft of an example of Did I Just Say That Out Loud?. The actual in-character quote is about a paragraph long. (The character is fairly verbose, and may have... embroidered what she said when documenting it in her journal)
In the interests of Clear, Concise... I'm considering paraphrasing, as the gist can be wrapped up in two short sentences.
Is this generally accepted? If so, is there a preferred format? I'm thinking something like:
or
Character's response boils down to: "Short Version"
Edited by underCoverSailsmanopenMisuse of YMMV?
- Fan-Disliked Explanation: The true meaning of Ash's goal has been deliberately kept ambiguous and vague by the creators, likely to keep it from being one of these. Pokemon.com stated as much in a response to an email asking them about it.
YMMV can't be played with, so if they are deliberately avoiding this it's not an example, right? This is just Riddle for the Ages.
- "Stop Having Fun" Guys: Paul starts off as this, criticizing Ash's more lax style of training and constantly beating him in battle to prove his point. After some Character Development and being humbled by Brandon, however, he grows to respect Ash's point of view (and vice versa).
Since it's an internal portrayal by the work as opposed to an audience reaction to the work, this doesn't sound YMMV. This sounds more like Take That! or Deconstructed Character Archetype.
openMB pothole adding
I was browsing YMMV.Hadestown and noticed the Magnificent Bastard entry for Hades had some potholes added, apparently without discussion. Those and similar potholes for other works were added to the Other Media MB Sandbox page by STARCRUSHER99, but not to the 'official' MB pages since they're locked. Is this allowed?

Edited by lalalei2001openPop Cultural Osmosis' Jesse James exmaple and "wholesomeness"
I found this example on Jesse James and well... (italics mine)
- Jesse James is remembered because of the folk song which said "He stole from the rich and he gave to the poor" and for various movie adaptations. The real Jesse James was a Confederate guerilla and slaveowner who massacred Union soldiers and once robbed medicine supplies for the poor. He was also a Wholesome Crossdresser and perhaps a male prostitute.
I'm pretty sure "Wholesome" and "Confederatenote as in a citizen of the Confederate States of America, the villains of the Civil War/slaver" are mutually exclusive terms. So I question the link to Wholesome Crossdresser in that example. Thoughts?
Edited by MorningStar1337openWrong way to do a recap page? Live Action TV
Recap.Only Fools And Horses doesn't seem like it's going the way a recap page should with the way the recaps are all on the same page for tropes; isn't this against wiki rules/conventions?

Tiny Little Letters makes a lot of edits on Tangled: The Series pages. I deleted shoehorns here, here, here, here, and here— darn, I cut a lot; have I grown trigger-happy? I wrote an edit reason for each deletion though. But what I want to talk about is that I suspect this troper does Draco in Leather Pants.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Done en masse. Toward the end of Season 1, the people of Corona turned their backs on Varian and denied him when he begged them for help. Now, he's allied himself with the Saporians and has taken over the kingdom, with Corona's citizens being forced to mine crystals for Varian's chemicals so the Saporians can use them to their advantage.
When "the people of Corona turned their backs on Varian", there was a deadly magical blizzard threatening to destroy the kingdom while he needed someone to save his father from being Taken for Granite that he (Varian) accidentally caused, and no one was able to do anything about it. So, it's totally justified to take over the kingdom and force them to mine crystals.A few days ago, the same troper added this on YMMV.Tangled The Series:
- Catharsis Factor:
- After seeing them display disturbing Lack of Empathy towards his problems in the second half of Season 1, with King Frederic hunting down Varian for the Demanitus Scroll and chasing him out of his own home, and Rapunzel never checking on Varian after Zhan Tiri's blizzard was over (thus abandoning him for months on end), as well as expressing little-to-no concern for his well-being even when seeing Quirin encased in amber, Varian gloating in their faces over abducting Queen Arianna is quite satisfying, especially when he taunts Frederic to his face and puts Rapunzel through physical pain while using her hair as a drill. This also goes true for Varian, in his giant automaton, grabbing Arianna away from them, after they'd shared a warm and long hug right in front of him as he breaks down over failing to free his father.
I've addressed Rapunzel's actions in the above-mentioned post. Arianna offers Varian a chance to turn from villainy after he abducts her, and he rejects it; she's done nothing bad to him. It's absolutely cathartic to see a good woman being nearly crushed to her death. So, what to do about this? Maybe I should talk to this troper but I don't know how. "Even if you're grief-stricken, it's not nice to enslave and kill innocent people?"
