Now that the Broken Streak entry under Recap. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 7 E 1 Celestial Advice has been deleted three times now for misuse, I think it is time for a review of the misuse of this trope (used as any break in trend as opposed to winning/losing streaks).

Wick check: 235 (meaning it would be a fairly easy clean-up) and 506 inbounds:

Out out 1/8th of all the examples, half are misuses.

here is an old crowner calling for cutting misuse. If they did that, that this new and continued misuse shows it needs more drastic action. Here is is all old clean-up thread locked as a general purge.

I say this trope needs a clearer name ("Broken Win/Loss Streak")

Wick check looks fine. Opened.

Previous thread: here (closed due to purge)

As the third to delete the entry in the recap page referenced in this thread's opening post, I'll third the motion.

There seems to be quite an interest in finding or creating a trope for broken trends. I suppose that's a matter for another thread or for a new trope launch; I see the idea was disregarded a couple of years ago, yet the interest persists...maybe something for the Trivia domain?

I, too, agree on renaming Broken Streak. Perhaps there could also be a trope for a series breaking something that's typical for the series (but wholly distinct from Nothing Is the Same Anymore) like the Friendship is Magic examples.

Someone tried added back the MLP example. I've added a commented out explanation for why. One of the reasons for deletion, from Josef5678 is "Broken Streak is about win/loss streaks, rather than broken formulas."

"Broken Formula" is the best trope name I can think of for what these examples are supposed to be, subversions of Strictly Formula.

But with the misuse of Broken Streak we should get that renamed first. I propose "Broken Win/Loss Streak". Any other name Ideas?

[up] Clearer is better. I'm down with it. [tup]

"Going against your formula every once in a while" sounds like a common trope that we already have...

Meta Twist (where either a twist doesn't happen when it did a lot before, or a different kind of twist happens) sounds like a subtrope of it.

We don't need justice when we can forgive. We don't need tolerance when we can love.

I also like "broken win/loss streak" as a replacement name.

What about "pattern break" for the misuse? "First season premiere that isn't a two-parter" doesn't exactly sound like a break from Strictly Formula to me, since the episode(s) still follow the same "somebody learns a lesson about friendship and magic" formula.

The given example could also be a subversion of Spoiled by the Format if the viewer goes in expecting a two-parter with a cliffhanger at the break.

I have another suggestion—why not rename this "21-1" after the moment when Brock Lesnar ended the undefeated streak of The Undertaker at WrestleMania?

[up]Because nobody who is unfamiliar with what is being referenced would understand the name and what it refers to. Trope names should be indicative of what they are without outside reference. Broken Streak has already been deemed insufficiently clear.

I agree with[up]. A title like that makes it sound more like winning by a landslide than a broken streak.

@9:

A name like that could eliminate the misuse that's there, but it will invite a different type of misuse, as explained in 11. [tdown]

Since we're contemplating renames, shall we set up a crowner?

[up]We're unanimous for some sort of rename, so lets get a crowner up.

Hooked one from scratch. Added the supported name.

Edit: For fairness, 21-1 will be added, albeit in a manner that can be linked easily.

I voted up my own suggestion; also, I would suggest an image of the "21-1" appearing on the screens.

The Undertaker's streak ending isn't even an example. Check the description; the trope is a lot more narrow than it sounds.

Calling in favor of Broken Win/Loss Streak. I'll move the contents over from Broken Streak, then apply a Custom Wiki Word to add the slash.

Once that's done, we can start changing valid wicks and eliminating the misused ones.

All wicks cleaned-up. Only 2 ghost wicks and 1 foreign language page remain. If someone can take care of those, great. Either way, our work here is done. Good job everyone. We can end this thread anytime now.

Those three are dealt with. The ghost wick with content had a pothole added to fix the glitch.

Got the rename noted in the appropriate spots, so we can close this.
