Five-Man Band has been receiving a lot of misuse. As was concluded in this TRS thread, it needs a massive cleanup. There are over 30 subpages and almost 3500 wicks to be gone through. This thread is for organizing the cleanup effort and discussing any and all examples to be added and cut.
What is correct use of the trope?
- The characters must be part of a team, that is, a team dynamic must exist between members of the band.
- There must be exactly 5 team members
Format for examples
In an effort to cut down on misuse as well as get rid of all the Zero Context Examples, we are trying to shift all examples to the following format. If you are familiar with a current work and can do a writeup for it, please do so and post it here.
The sandbox for sorting examples is here.
Completed
Subpages:
- Other (Moved and redirected to a Just for Fun page, as that is what is was acting as.)
Still needs work
Wicks (Related To page):
- B-V
I will keep this post updated with the progress made, and any other needed information.

I would just like to point out that none of the admins that have contacted me about my additions to the page have ever told me that an example has too many members.
Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonIt does not have to come from the admins or mods. Read the trope definition: FIVE members, not four, not six. FIVE.
But since that's the way you want to be: Speaking as a mod, An example with more than five members is not a valid example. If you, ~papyru30, add any more examples with more or fewer than five characters, one to a role, that will be grounds for a wiki editing suspension.
Happy now?

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.At one point there was consensus around The Dividual having two people act in one role. But only if they are explicitly a duo acting in that role (which is what allows Threepio and his counterpart Artoo to both be The Smart Guy)
While the last example has other problems, wouldn't Co-Dragons technically fall under a similar dividual clause?
edited 1st May '17 11:40:18 PM by acrobox
I don't think so, because Co-Dragons can have a number of differences while still filling the same general role.
Word of mod is pretty clear here. Also, I recall examples trying to use the Dividual clause getting removed. If it was ever the case, then it isn't any more.
Were they removed for using The Dividual or for trying to use that as a loophole to shoehorn in bad examples, though?
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.It was for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and it had a reasonable case, in my opinion. "Fitz-Simmons" is the Inseries Nickname for Leo Fitz and Jenna Simmons, who both have a "smart guy" role in Coulson's team and have worked together for years. It was deleted from the series' main page.
that sounds like at least as, if not more legit case as Star Wars.
The Dividual loophole was allowed for Star Wars because of the other rule that mandated they stay as the trope images. (which is of course also somewhat confused because The Leader replaced The Hero in the band, but Luke's picture is still only on The Hero)
Here is my proposal for a gender-inverted Five-Man Band for Steven Universe.
- The Leader: Garnet, who's levelheadedness and future vision makes her the unofficial leader
- The Lancer: Pearl, who acts as The Kirk for the group and Number Two to Garnet.
- The Smart Guy: Peridot, a Gadgeteer Genius and the most knowledgeable about Homeworld.
- The Big Guy: Amethyst, the most violent and least intelligent Gem.
- The Chick: Steven Universe, the Tagalong Kid that acts as The Heart.
Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst and Steven are a unit. Peridot and Lapis are a unit. Connie is around, etc.
Even if the roles fit, these five rarely operate together as a unit of five.
That by itself sounds disqualifying. Even if they did operate as a unit of five and Steven was the only guy, guys still can't be called "The Chick". You replace it with The Heart and then add context to that.
OK I've been trying to figure out a set up for this on the "is this an example?" page. This was my last try and I'll concede that it's shoehorning thank you for being so nice about this I'll stop trying to set this up unless new developments in the show make this trope applicable.
Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonI found this example here and I was wondering if using this trope to describe groups like this is valid.
- Halo: The alien species that form the Covenant
- The Big Bad - The San Shyuum, who serve as the rulers of the empire
- The Dragon - The Sangheili (or Elites), who occupy the positions of military leaders within the empire. Later replaced by the Jiralhanae
- The Evil Genius - The Huragok (or Engineers), biological supercomputers who maintain and repair the Covenant's technology. The "Evil" part is questionable though, as all of them are Actual Pacifists who almost never do any actual fighting.
- The Brute - The Jiralhanae, appropriately nicknamed the "Brutes". The Mgalekgolo (or Hunters) as well, given their massive size and near invulnerability.
- The Dark Chick - Unggoy and Kig-Yar (nicknamed Grunts and Jackals respectively). Both are some of the odder races serving in the Covenant, with the former being used as Cannon Fodder

Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonok thank you I'll remove this example from that page.
Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheonDeleted this from Kingdom Hearts χ Characters:
- Five-Man Band:
- The Leader: Ira
- The Big Guy/The Rival* : Aced
- The Sneaky Guy/The Lancer* : Invi
- The Smart Guy/Tagalong Kid: Gula
- The Heart/The Chick* : Ava
- The Sixth Ranger: Luxu, an outsider to the group with a distinct outfit and orders.
That one might still be able to qualify, but all the slashing bullshit and The Sixth Ranger need to go, indentation needs to be fixed, and the individual members need context.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Deleted this from WebAnimation.RWBY Chibi:
- Five Woman Band: In the trailer for Season 2, team RWBY groups up with Nora to form an actual band. If one considers the musical roles of this trope, then Nora (drums), Weiss (keyboards), and Blake (tambourine) are The Big Guy, The Smart Guy, and The Chick respectively. This leaves Yang (guitar) and Ruby (bass); if the former's behaviour in the snippets are anything to go by, then they are The Leader and The Lancer respectively.
Problems with this:
- The use of "the musical version" is forced in general.
- There's 5 girls. The trope needs to have a 4:1 or 3:2 gender ratio of some kind.
- The trope name is illegally potholed.
- Blake is so not The Chick. She's probably the most anti-social person in the listed group.
- The spoiler tags are unnecessary.
RWBY Chibi is also far more comedic than regular RWBY (there's basically no plot), so their normal roles are so downplayed that I'm not even sure they're present.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Seconded
This example lists the loosely connected forces of evil from the Book of Revelation:
- Revelation - forces of evil
- The Big Bad: The Great Red Dragon. An Eldritch Abomination with seven heads and ten horns, he is worshiped as a god by the repressive government run by...
- The Dragon: The Beast from the Sea, a seven-headed, ten-horned monstrosity who runs the governments of Earth for the Dragon, as it is the Dragon who has given him power. When people say "The Antichrist," this is usually who they mean. Funnily enough, the Great Red Dragon is not The Dragon.
- The Evil Genius: The Beast from the Land, apparently an Evil Sorcerer type, who performs miracles to fool people into following the first Beast.
- The Brute: Abbadon/Apolyon, commander of the locust-demons that escape from the Abyss before the others even turn up.
- The Dark Chick: The Mother of Harlots, at least assuming she's supposed to be a person and not a metaphorically-described place.
- Team Pet/Sixth Ranger Traitor: The seven-headed, ten-horned beast the Harlot rides.
Does it qualify?
edited 27th May '17 11:47:07 AM by DustSnitch
Nope. Not at all.. They aren't a team. They not only do not have a team dynamic, they aren't even all present at the same time.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Alright, I'll delete it then.
Suggestions from Fallout 3
Reilly's Rangers.
- The Leader: Reilly, the group's commander.
- The Lancer: Butcher, the team medic, Reilly's lover, and interim leader when the group is separated from her.
- The Big Guy: Brick, heavy weapons specialist.
- The Smart Guy: Donovan, repair and electronics specialist.
- The Chick: Theo, new member under contract and tasked to carry the ammo as he isn't very good in a fight.
The Mothership Zeta crew
- The Leader: The Player Character.
- The Lancer: Somah, your first ally and the only one from the wasteland like you.
- The Big Guy: Paulson, literal cowboy who is eager to shoot up the aliens.
- The Smart Guy: Elliot, army field medic who best understands how to use the alien technology.
- The Chick: Sally, the child who brings the group together and acts as adviser and Mission Control.
I also understand The Sixth Ranger is no longer considered part of the trope?
I think Zeta qualifies more than the Rangers.
That's part of the problem (and it's amazing how often it gets ignored, since the "five" is right there in the name). The other part, of course, is that the name sounds way too general.
If it weren't about a decade too late for any such thing, I'd suggest renaming both tropes! :)
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.
